16 Month Old Waking up Too Early (5:45) - How to Get Him to Sleep Later

My 16 month old is going through a phase of getting up super early, usually around 5:45 or 6:00. He goes to bed between 6:30-7:00 ... we've been trying putting him to bed at 6:30 to see if he'll sleep longer, but it's not working. He takes one good nap a day, between 2-3 hours long, around 12:30. Any advice?

What can I do next?

The timechange my change things, so don't do anything till then, but how long do you want him to sleep till? As he is getting about the right amount of sleep, you may need to put him down later if you want him to sleep later. The other thing, is to let him lay there and entertain himself for a little while (like if you want him to sleep till 6:30). If you need him to sleep later, then you will need to make adjustments.

Just think ahead to a month or so out and dealing with the time change. It may be a blessing now that he is getting up so early. You won't have to worry about making any changes to his schedule when the time shifts and he would then be getting up at 6:45.

Otherwise, make sure your window treatments are really blocking out the light. Good luck!

Sorry but this sounds about right , he's getting 12 hrs at night and a good nap in the day. My 20 month is pretty much the same schedule as your son (our nap starts a little later though) and she is up between 6 & 6.30 in the morning.

...and the problem is??? Consider yourself lucky. Most parents on this board would give their left $%^ to be in the situation you are in. 6:00 is not super-early for them. It is perfectly normal--my kids both go to bed around 6:30 or 7:00 and get up at 6:00. I put them on this schedule when they were infants. It's not your child that needs to change, it's you. Go to bed earlier.

Mine have been and still are (2 and 3.5) early risers. Always up between 5 and 6. We've tried earlier and later bedtimes, but it seems to be their internal clock.... as my mother-in-law points out is just like my husband's was! I think sometimes it's just the way they are. Maybe daylight savings time will help a bit this weekend! Good luck - go to be earlier if you can and remember it's just a stage...

Sounds like he's sleeping the right amount at night, so you could try limiting his nap time during the day, or putting him to bed later. My little boy has always had a "late" bedtime, but that's because mommy here is not usually an early bird and I don't like us both to have to be up until 7 or so.

kiddos this age need 12-14 hours of sleep and it sounds like he is getting that. Put him to bed later.

Hi B. - my best answer is to go with the flow on this one. His sleep patterns will change as he grows but no guarantees that he will start sleeping any later than this. Once he is in a big-boy bed, you'll have to adjust again because no he can get out of bed.

If he is sleeping 11-12 hours at night, truthfully you have it made. My kids never slept that long at night. Perhaps consider going to bed earlier yourself so that you dont mind getting up at 6:00

I have always put my kids down around 6-630 knowing that more sleep actually helps them sleep longer... I would get resistance from others that would tell me it was too early, but you seem to know as well as I do that keeping them up later isn't the key! Only makes them more fussy and sleep is all over the place.

However I will say this.... My now 21 month old was just ready to stay up a bit later and I had to accept that :)
She would go down at 630 sharp from around 5 months on! But I started to see right around 17 months that she was REALLY awake at 630pm (more than normal) and wasn't sleeping in like she used to. She would play in her crib until nearly 8pm and then finally give in to sleep. So we now put her down at 8 and she is back to sleeping until 7 or later.

While I am like you and believe a early bed time is key we have to be flexible that our kids are getting older and can stay up a bit later.

My now 5 month old is on a 6pm sharp schedule and it is great, but I will watch for clues as to when she is ready to extend that bedtime schedule a bit down the road.
Perhaps just give it a few day of putting him to bed around 730 and see if you get a later wake up call :) Its worth a shot...
