11 Month Old: LONG Naps

My son is 11 months old. The past week or two he's been taking really long naps. Like 1.5 hours to 2 hours. He sleeps 10-12 hours at night, and he usually takes two naps a day. Some days he'll only have one, but the last 4-5 days he's been consistently having two long naps per day. A couple of times he's napped from 4 to 6, and I've had to wake him up because it starts to get dark, and I don't want him up late. He's still been going to bed at his normal times, just taking really long naps. It seems like he'd sleep for hours if we didn't wake him sometimes! Is this normal? It's not every time, but it has become more common and I'm a little concerned. Growth spurt?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms. Glad to hear it's normal. Now I feel bad for not letting him sleep! I seriously miss him when he naps for so long! ;-)

I'd say enjoy the quiet time, and get the next size of clothes ready. He may also be preparing to switch to just one nap, so be thinking about how to make that switch, too. I remember waking my little people sometimes around that age so they would sleep later. Maybe skipping the morning nap and eating a ridiculously early lunch so he could get a really long afternoon nap would help. Have fun! Such a fun age!

doesn't sound alarming to me. i say it's a growth spurt or maybe he's getting a cold but showing no other symptoms just yet... imo :)

He sounds fine to me, especially if he still goes to bed at night at a reasonable time. At that age, they generally need around 14 to 15 hours of sleep a day. When my daughter was 11 months she was still a twice a day napper - one late morning and one mid-afternoon - and they were about 2 hours each. Around 14 months she dropped to 1 nap a day but it would be a 3 hour nap. Once in a while it would even be 4 hours! Now she is 4, she gets 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night, is in bed between 8 and 9, but still needs a nap most days - and it will still be 2 to 3 hours! Sleep is good - too many kids don't get enough sleep and it can affect their brain development. And/or they are crabby and irritable all the time. Enjoy the quiet time, because he could end up being a kid that drops the nap totally and refuses to nap starting at 2 years old!

When my younger daughter was 12-18 months old, she napped so long that she was only awake for four hours per 24 hour period. I complained to her pedi a few times and he told me not to worry, that she was fine, she just wanted to sleep. He gave me no reason to worry, so I let her sleep. I remember thinking, "I miss my baby!!" because she was never awake! I didn't wake her up because she was very cranky if I didn't let her sleep. She did eventually grow out of it, has had no issue, and is a perfectly normal kiddo. Enjoy the time, sounds like you've got a great sleeper!

Enjoy it. Don't let him sleep past 4 p.m. Could be a growth spurt, teething or he might be coming down with something.

Both my kids, since babies, when about to hit a growth-spurt or developmental change, sleep LONGER and more.
My son, has been known to sleep even 14 hours, straight. And I do NOT wake him. At all. At these junctures. I go by his cues.

Or it may indicate they are getting sick.

My son at that age, napped THREE times a day. And still slept at night just fine.

Your son is 11 months old. 12 months is a growth-spurt time and developmental change. He is on the cusp, of an age change.

He won't sleep any more than his little body needs! My son at that age slept 11-12 hours a night and two naps of 1.5 hours a piece per day.

I vote growth spurt! Sometimes my girl (12 mo) sleeps 3 hours 2 x per day and still sleeps 12 hours at night. I don't let her sleep past 6pm though no matter what. Let him have his naps mama ;)

Our son is now 2 1/2 and he just recently quit taking naps, but before that he was sleeping from 8pm-7am each night and taking a nap from 1-4 each day. He did this from age 16mths. to right before 2 1/2. Then he just quit taking naps. I still lay him down, but he just sits in his crib talking and singing to himself. Now he goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps until 8am, so he is getting good sleep still, despite no nap.

I think your son is sleeping well, I would just let him be.

He may be having a growth spurt that would make him a little more tired than usual. Just try not to let him sleep too late in the afternoon this way he goes to bed a usual.
