Suddenly Single Mom Needs to Build Support System

I'm a mom of two beautiful daughters (5 and 2.5), and just before the new year I found myself suddenly and unexpectedly single. Their dad has virtually disappeared, taking them once a week for around six hours tops. I'm hanging in there, working full time to support us, with the girls going to two lovely in-home daycares right down the road from my in-home office. But what do I do when one (or more) of them get sick and can't go to daycare? All my girlfriends have children, and I can't ask them to come risk exposure to whatever bug is...

Questions About Having a Birthday Party for My 2 Year Old...

I could use some tips from other mom's on having a 2nd birthday party for my son. He'll be 2 in March. Last year, we did the big 1 year birthday party with a housefull of mostly family and close friends - 30 people, etc. This year I was thinking of inviting the family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) again on both sides plus a couple of personal friends of our's, one of whom also has a child the same age. We don't plan on having a little kids party yet, most of our friends either don't have kids or their kids are much older. ...

Did I Throw a Lame Birthday Party?

My four year old just had her birthday, and I feel so lame. I'm unemployed right now, so money is a little tight. But we had her party at a "party place" because doing it at home is impractical and a hassle -- I don't have the room or the energy for it. So I kept it to the minimum, which was 10 kids. The party room seemed very empty, the hostess was not good (young, not in control, stressed out), and I totally felt rushed out of there. Some of the guests seemed surprised that mutual acquaintances of ours were not there. Ugh! I don't know...
