My little one is starting to slap. She is almost 1, and if I am holding her, she'll wack me in the face sometimes. Every time I try to say "no" or "that hurts", she laughs...I almost think she is trying to be affectionate and playful in a way and she doesn't get that it hurts. She met another baby recently and as soon as the baby crawled up to her, she slapped the baby on the head...not good. Anybody have this same experience? Any kind of discipline tactic that worked?
Thanks!

Hi, my friend's 1 year old son has been refusing that eat very much for the past month. It seems that every meal is a delicate balance between a war versus blissful cooperation. This has been unusual since he is well over the 95% in weight and height and has been enjoying solids for many months. Has anyone had a similar experience? We are both first-time moms, and the other moms we've talked to haven't had this problem. She's beginning to get worried especially since he has been waking up in the middle of the night screaming in hunger. She doesn't want to affect his concept of meals but at the same time she doesn't want him to starve. She also doesn't want him to get in the habit of only eating crackers. Thanks for your help!

Well, I have another request today too. My daughter recently went in for shots, and they were concerned that her head had grown a lot in the past few months - she measured 19 inches. The doctor said that instead of doing a CAT scan now to check for water on the brain, etc. that we'll wait to see what she measures in 2 months and if it's a big difference again, that we'll do a CAT scan, but if it hasn't grown much, we'll know she just has a large head (like me per my husband) :) Anyway, the next day, I called the nurse for the measurement to tell my husband, and she said 19, but she was just 18 3 months prior per my baby book and she's gradually increased by an inch all along, since 13 1/____@____.com maybe they charted wrong on the graph last visit and (she's just always had a big head per this nurse). Her soft spot isn't protruding out as usually with babies with the water on the brain issue, so the doctor really wasn't too concerned. I just think normally babies heads are 18" by 12 mo. and she's 19 at 10...probably just a little on the large side, but just checking to see if anyone else has been in this position. Thanks!

My 10 month old has started biting when he wants to get attention or wants you to help him stand or be picked up. When I tell him that it hurts and biting isnt nice in a stern way, he giggles because, I think, he is not used to me being stern. Has anyone else dealt with this? And, if so, how did you discourage the baby from biting. Any adivce would be very much appreciated.

My 10 month old baby has just started crawling a little bit and standing on everything, including his crib. With his new found talent he has been refusing to sleep and insisting on pulling himself up on the edge of the crib and screaming until someone comes in (sometimes for hours) no matter how tired he is. He was napping just fine and sleeping through the night, now he's going to bed later and exhausted and not napping at all. I understand that babies will go through phases when they learn something new then they won't sleep as well, but how long does this phase last, and any advice on how to make it easier on both of us?
Note: We have followed the "Baby Sleep Book" by Dr. Sears since he was born, except for the co-sleeping part, it just hasn't worked for us due to personal reasons.

OK, my 10 month old daughter hates to have her diaper changed. She also hates to have a change of clothes. It has always been this way since birth, I have been telling myself it's just a phase she will get used to it. Nope, only getting worse. the bigger and stronger she gets, the harder it is to change her diaper or clothe her. I have tried everything from singing to peek-a-boo and even tickling to get her to see it can be fun. Nothing works. It's major drama every time. I realize it must be me having to manipulate her body that she must hate. But there isn't anyway around it for diaper changes. Now that she is older and sitting, I can put tops over her head and she will reluctantly stick her arms up through the arm holes, but as soon as I lay her down to snap a onsie, it's a major protest, fighting me trying to get away while crying. I'm baffled and completely worn out. Does anyone have ideas on how to make this a more enjoyable experience for the both of us?

My 10 month old has been in an in-home daycare since she was three months old. The last two days, they are reporting that she is very fussy and does not want to be around the other children. When she is at home with me, she is fine, seems like herself. I am concerned about her and wondered if it is normal for her to suddenly be upset but only at daycare? Anyone gone through this or have ideas on how to handle?

My 10-month old used to love her baby food and finger foods. Now she has decided she won't eat ANYTHING except some goldfish on occasion. She pushes everything away. I've tried adult food (pancakes, french toast, avocado, noodles, hummus, etc.) and she refuses that as well. I'm assuming it's just her exerting her independence but it has impacted her night sleeping as she's been getting up in the middle of the night or very early in the morning very hungry. I keep offering her food (I put it on her tray so she can pick it up herself and I try to feed her with a spoon, neither works) just in case she changes her mind but this has been going on for about 2 weeks now and am wondering how long this "phase" will last. She's taking in about 30 ounces of milk (breast and formula) per day. Thanks.

Hello. My 11 mo. old daughter has been eating less and less food over the past week and demanding more formula. She looks at her empty bottle and cries for more rather than eat the delicious food I've prepared for her. It's not an issue of her not liking the food; she shakes her head "no" before I can even get a spoonful in. She just cut 2 teeth at the exact same time. Could this be the reason? She is also defiant at naptime which NEVER used to be a problem. Thankfully, nighttime sleep has not been affected. She seems to have new onset separation anxiety as well. I'm trying to figure out if all these things are somehow related. I can't leave her side for a second without her crying! This is not like her! Any ideas?

I am probably just worrying too much, like I usually do, but my son isn't pulling himself up yet. He will be 11 months on june 10th, and as his first birthday is coming nearer I find myself worrying about things. He crawls, sits up on his own and loves to walk with anyone who is willing to help him....but he isnt pulling himself up on anything. I try and encourage him to, but he just doesnt. sometimes he tries, but gives up within like 5 seconds. He will pull himself up to a stand using my hands, if I hold my hands out, but that is all. Is there anything I should be doing to help him start pulling up? Do you think there could be something wrong? Is there any chance he will walk by his 1st birthday? Also, he isnt saying any words...he babbles on and on, but no distinct words....should I be worried? I know I must sound like a raving loon, but I appreciate any insight. Thank you.

I have a soon to be 12 month old baby girl who has always had a earlyish bedtime, lately she has been staying up a little later and my husband and I's only babysitter has moved away so we sometimes have to go out when it's dark. I'm aware this ia probably our fault, she was a very colicky baby so we just didn't take her out much at night. She does great during the day I do errands it feels like everyday! Once it gets dark though, she will scream and cry!!! And all who has experienced this situation while driving know's just how difficult it can be!!!! I'm assuming we just need to keep doing it to get her used to it???? Any advice would be great. I would like to get out of the house once my husband gets home at night, but we just can't because of her!???

My 11 month old has been throwing up on & off since Sunday. Would it be the flu? When do you worry & seek medical attention? He's keeping formula down & an occasional jar of baby food. On Sunday we switched from our regular BeechNut brand (jarred food) to Gerber & that was the 1st time he threw up so I thought it was just the new food but now he throws up on his favorites too. Also, he has a rash that seems to be getting worse but it's only on his legs. He doesn't act sick. He isn't crying more than normal or lethargic. What should I do?

Have any other moms had to go thru this and if so how did your get your child to stop? it scares me that she finds it funny and now i cant really take her anywhere cuz she does this all the time.

In addition, she a cold with a runny nose last week so it is worse right now. I assumed the rash was a breakout from the dirt or oil from her fingers because she is always touching it so we have been making sure we wash her hands and lip a lot. Her recent runny nose just seems to be making it worse. Does anyone have any ideas on what to put on it? I read possibly lanolin. Thanks!

Hi,
My daughter is not drinking milk from a cup (sipply or regular) since we stopped giving her milk in a bottle. At the advice of our pediatrician we stopped the bottle "cold turkey" about 3 weeks ago. My daughter will drink water from a sippy cup, but I think it's not enough. She will sip milk and then push it away. We give her yogurt and cheese for dairy products, but I thought toddlers need 18 oz of milk a day.
Has anyone else had this experience when switching off the bottle? What did you try?

My 14 month son gets very upset if we tell him "no" or move him if he is doing something inappropriate. Sometimes, he will become upset if we simply put him down (instead of holding him while cooking, cleaning, or doing anything that requires 2 hands). When he gets upset, he will be on all 4's and slam his head into the ground. If we dont stop him, he usually will do it several times and be over it after a bit more fussing. We have tried distracting him, moving him, letting him cry it out, picking him up, etc, but are not sure what is the best way to handle it. I am afraid that if I am immediately picking him up again, I will only be reinforcing this negative behavior. This has been going on for about a month. Will he grow out of it? My first response is to let him do it, and eventually, he will realize this hurts and stop on his own. My husband is the complete opposite, feeling we need to immediately coddle him until he calms down. If anyone has delt with this or has any information, I would greatly appreciate it.

My 17 month old son does not say too many words, basically Dadda, sometimes Mama and some letters like "H", "G", and "O" (he loves to watch Wheel of Fortune and immitates the letters). My husband and I talk to him constantly and ask him to repeat words and read to him but his vocabulary is still very limited.
He attends a daycare and there is a 16 month old child who has a much bigger vocabulary than he does. My question is shouldn't his vocabulary be more developed at this age and what can I do to encourage his speech?

Hello fellow Mommies! I have a predicament i've never had to face before...i have 3 other children, but my new baby girl is totally different than any of my others had been personality wise...she cries, no, screams, when someone other than Mommy tries to hold her! She is that way with our husband, and he absoulutely is heartbroken. He gets upset about it. I have to remind him that she is only 14 wks. old, and that he has been in this world for 37 years, so his coping skills SHOULD be better than hers! :) I feel for him, because he loves to hold and snuggle our babies. He was that way with all of them, and he feels he's missing out on bonding. I do breastfeed, so he can't bond over bottlefeeding unfortunately. She (Josie) even cries when our 14 yr.old daughter holds her for longer than 1 minute. She will flirt and smile with family (And strangers) if Mommy is holding her. When they get sucked in by her charm and ask to hold her, i cringe! Perfect example: 2 weeks ago i went to our 8 yr. old daughters Parent/teacher conference...when we were done, her teacher asked to hold Josie...i warned the teacher of her disposition, but she wanted to give it a try...sure enough, as soon as i passed her off ,Josie craned her neck 360 degrees like an owl (Looking for me) then starting waling! Will she grow out of this?!? I cannot get a break. Even when i grocery shop, she prefers to be with me in a baby bjorn carrier. No family member can hold her for very long without her having a complete meltdown. I cannot leave her with my parents to babysit, because she'll cry until sweat is pouring off of her! Is this normal? I am a Mom of 4 and feel like i have NO experience under my belt! My husband has said that if our first child was like her, we'd probably only have one kid!!! :) I LOVE her to no end, she is my heart, but Momma needs a break! Help!

Hello moms. I desperately need your help. My 3 month old has been fighting this cold since Christmas. We all had colds at the time. My husband had it pretty bad and he stayed away from her as much as possible. It was only a small cough and some stuffiness and seemed to be getting better but now the passed couple of days she sounds AWFUL! She is soooo stuffy! It sounds like she can barely breath and I feel so bad for her. I've done the saline spray and sucked out her boogies, I've run a steam vaporizer in her room and have now moved onto a cool air humidifier. Of course I can give her no medicine to help her :( She is breathing through eating so far, thank goodness. I'm watching for a fever, which hopefully doesn't happen! I wondered if any of you have ever had such a young baby with a cold and how long it took to go away. To make matters worse, as of yesterday now I started feeling a horrible sore throat and I'm so afraid now I'm going to make her worse. If she had to feel this sore throat too, I think I'll go crazy...the poor thing. Any thoughts would be so much appreciated.

I picked up my 3 month old son from daycare yesterday and when I got him home, my husband noticed that he was looking very pale and grey. He had been battling a little cold over the weekend so we took his temperature. The thermoscan that we have will show you the last temperature recorded and it read 95.7 which was taken while he was at daycare. The temperature that we took ready 96.5 and a couple of hours later it was back up to 98.8. My daycare is a homebased and she often leaves her back door and some windows open while the other children play outside and it's still rather chilly here with daytime highs only around 55-65. Does anyone know what is too low for a body temp at that age?

Help! My three week old daughter is only happy when she is being held. Is this normal? My son was never like this. He used to be happy in the bouncy seat or swing or just hanging out on a blanket in the room with us. She is totally different, I have to carry her constantly if she is awake - and she is such a light sleeper that she usually wakes up if we put her down asleep. I have started wearing her a lot, but I am afraid if I wear her all the time she'll never learn to comfort herself. I know you can't really spoil a newborn - but when does that end? I want to do what is best for her, but have to be careful to give special time to my two year old too!

Hi all
Just had a little boy on 12/18. My three year old loves him and is so happy he has a baby brother. He tells him not to cry when he crys, helps me a decent amount changing diapers, etc. I involve him as much as possible. BUT he still wants to 'play' with baby brother. He rocks him a bit rough in the bouncy seat. Touches his face a lot and leans on him heavy when he kisses him. He has not tried to on purpose harm the baby in any way but I am very nervous. My baby was crying last night and my three year old put his hands over his mouth and said to me with such confidence 'its ok mommy, this will help him stop crying'. I am so afraid he is going to harm him by accident. I am constantly on top of him and wont leave them alone for a second. Any advice? I explain he is fragile and small all the time and praise him when he kisses the baby or does anything positive because I dont want him to feel like he is a part of this and not secondary (because he is not of course).
Looking for advice.

Hi all,
My son is 3 years old and very independent in fact he was potty trained by the time he was 2 1/2! However, when it comes to his pacifier he will NOT give it up. He only uses the pacifier when he sleeps and it is only at home. At school, he takes naps just fine without it. We have tried bribbing him with rewards, using the Binky Fairy, and now I have started cutting off the ends of the nipple so he can hardly put it in his mouth. We tried taking it away cold turkey and he cried for over 2 hours and nearly threw up because he was so upset. He refused to take an afternoon nap in his bed and just sat in it talking for the time he was supposed to be sleeping.

My 4 month old daughter seems to have separation anxiety and I didn't think babies could get it when they are so little. Whenever someone holds her (other than me and my husband) she screams. Nothing calms her down until one of us takes her back. This has made it impossible to have a babysitter for her (I work part-time), because she screams the whole time with the babysitter. My 4 month old cut his first tooth last Saturday and seemed to be ok with it - no fever or irritability, but just last night he flipped out and it's obvious that his mouth really hurts him. He was doing really well in his crib, but last night we had to put him in his swing to soothe him because he was up every 45 minutes.
I tried homeopathic remedies (Hylands and Humphries) and last night finally used Baby Oragel and some Tylenol.
Anyone have any other suggestions? He's not cranky all the time, just on and off and is having a hard time sleeping. I'm scared to use the swing at night because I don't want him to get out of the habit of sleeping in his crib, but will a few nights hurt?

I went to the doctor today, the 3rd time in 2 weeks, because my son has been sick with what I was first told was a cold,I have been seeing the nurse pract. who told me to just give otc cold med,I told her I was very concerned about his weezing but she said he was fine that it was just "baby noises",well she was wrong I went in today and seen the reg. doc who was very shocked and said he had never heard a baby weez like that I explained to him that this had been going on long before he got sick but has worsened since,he also has ear infections in both ears and rsv,the doc explained that he thinks he has respatory distress and put him on 2 diff. meds for a breathing machine and antibiotics,he asked if athsma-? runs in the family my older children are fine and the only person I can think of that has it on either side in my little sister. Also neither my husband or I smoke, and it is not allowed in our home. To me(family even noticed)he has always had breathing problems of somesort, since day 1 at the hospital his lips turned blue but the nurse said it was brusing from birth{he was a c-section}then he spits up terribly and was treated for reflux for his 1st 3 months, Even before he got sick simple things seem to make him out of breath,ie...laughing to hard, eating a bottle without stopping to breath(sometimes while eating he jerks back and gasps for air),leaning forward while sitting and playing ect...I am so nervous about this I don't want to put him down because i'm afraid he will stop breathing, this being difficult because I have an 19 month old,if I do lay him down, however,he is elevated. It's so sad because he is such and even still a very happy baby, always smiling and "talking" and hes a big boy already 20lbs and 30in and on top of all this my poor baby has cut in 2 teeth!! If anybody has any advice or has had similar problems with their child any help will be greatly appreciated!!!Thank you-N.

He fusses, pulls of the breast and or bottle etc. He has been this way since moments after birth so I cant really attribute it to something I am eating. He also was like this before the use of formula so I dont think that is a factor. His pediatrician recommended Mylocin drops which we started last night. They seem to be helping a little bit but not in the way I had hoped. Does anyone have any tips on how to help diminish the gassiness?

Hi everyone. My 4 month old daughter, Savannah, will not try to roll over from her tummy to back. She almost has it the other way, and she's rolled from tummy to back in her sleep. But when she's awake she won't even attempt it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage her to roll over?

My formerly super-happy baby has become increasingly cranky in the evenings. We took him to the doctor, who confirmed that he is ok (no ear infections, etc.), and has begun teething.
My question is, why is he pretty much fine all day and only grumpy in the evening? If its teething, wouldnt you think it'd hurt him all day? This is my first child, so I've never dealt with a teething baby before, so maybe this is normal? Anyone else's babies do this?

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this??? I started my daughter on rice cereal and bananas (I mashed them myself) on Thursday (she's had three full days of this - twice a day). She's a big drooler, so she had a bit of a red rash under her neck before the solids. All of a sudden her neck - front and back - is covered with little white bumps. It seems to be painful for her because she loves the bath and tonight she cried really hard when my husband was giving her the bath. I am curious if this is hives or a heat rash or some sort of food allergy? Has anyone experienced this. I should also mention that our 2 year old has eczema and this does not look like that's what it is.

Hi mommas! I have a healthy 5 month old girl. She has been sticking her neck out (like a turtle) and pulling it up to the left. She will do this multiple times a day. It is always to the left, never the right. We call it her "turtle neck" or her "E.T. head". I don't think it is a muscle spasm. I don't know what it is. Is this normal? Did she just maybe figure out she can do something new and that is all it is? Did any of your babies do this? I am trying not to be a nervous first time mother, but I don't know what is normal and what is not. Thanks for any advice you may have!

My 5 month old son doesn't push up on his arms. He's been rolling over from his back to his tummy for over a month now, but just shows no intrest in pushing up. This weekend she started trying to get his knees up underneath himself in what I'm assuming is him trying to lay the foundation to crawl. When he does turn over whether it be on the floor or in his crib at night, he gets fussy and aggrivated. Is this normal and what do I need to do, if anything, to get him to push up? Do I think that he needs to be doing this already and shouldn't? He holds his head up when he's on his belly great, he just has no intrest in pushing up on his arms.

My 5 month old has been waking up from his naps (after about 20 min.) with a high pitched scream. He is still exhausted, because his eyes are still closed while he is screaming. Also, he looks so tired.
He was a colicky baby, and is very gassy. I am not sure what to do to help him, he seems to be in pain.
When I am carrying him upstairs to his room, I can feel his legs clinching in, every stair we walk up.....poor little guy :(
Has this ever happened to anyone else? He was on reflux med. from the dr. before, but didn't really help. Maybe I needed to try it for a longer time.
I am breastfeeding exclusively and giving him some cereal....
I would appreciate any advice!
Thanks

Hello. My 5 week old baby has a stuffy nose and a wet cough for over a week now. I called the doctor and he said it was just because of the humidity in the house. He told me to keep the temperature in the house at 68, use Ocean Nose drops, put her in the bathroom with steam, use a humidifier, boid water, giver her water after she eats and prob her up. I have been doing all of this and nothing seems to help. I took her to the doctor 2 days ago just to make sure she wasn't sick and he said I am doing everything I should be doing, but it does not seem to be going away. Any suggestions on how to speed up the process. Thanks for any help.

We started feeding our baby solids (rice cereal) at 6 months..that was a couple weeks ago. I had been exclusively breast feeding until then. Dr wanted him to also take an iron supplement/vitamin to make sure his intake is sufficient..so I filled the Rx. About a week after started feeding, I introduced oatmeal..and within a few days noticed the eczema on his cheeks..along with a couple of diarrhea's. Long story short..wasn't sure if it was the iron or the oatmeal, so I stopped both & did rice cereal for the next week. I gave the baby oatmeal again this past Monday & his rash came back & so did the diarrhea. I am really surprised & am wondering if anyone else's baby had this happen? I have started giving him the liquid vitamins again (yuck) & all seems to be back on track. I am nervous that he's going to have other allergies..I cut milk out of my diet when he was 3 mos for similar reasons... Thanks moms

My son was diagnosed with this on Wednesday, although, he has been having symptoms since Monday. We went to the DR on Monday and they said it was an ear infection. When he did not get better by Wednesday, I brought him in again and was told he had this disease, which a lot of children at his daycare had. My problem is, how do I get him to take his bottles? Because of the ulcers in his mouth, he refuses to eat! He eats better at night, but today (going on the 4th day) he has only had about 4 ounces of formula. Yesterday, he had about 22 and the 2 days before that, he had 16 ounces those days each. I don't know if any other mothers have had this happen to their child before, and if so, what did you do and how did you get them to eat?

He got his frist tooth 2 weeks ago and his second last week, he was hard to get to fall asleep but i let him lay with me for a hour then moved him to his bed and it was fine I didnt want to give meds for teething so that comforted him so he didnt need them. Now the bottom two are in and he is still in pain, Im not sure if it is his teeth or b/c on thursday he got his 6 month shots. He never acted like this after his other shots thou. I have even let him stay in my bed and he still wakes in pain screaming and crying. His doctor said if it goes on for another week to come in. I was wondering if any one else has ever had this problem and what they did to take care of it? Oh we also just started teething biscuts last week and a sippy cup yesterday, he has been on cearal since 5 months old and we started oatmeal 2 weeks ago.

My daughter is 6 months old and is a very happy content little baby. She isn't doing any babbling. The Pedi said not to worry, but of course I am now more aware of it and am worrying. She makes screeches and screams and is happy to sit and play and she is definately an observer. She loves watching people, cars, the waves. I am sure I don't need to worry, but at 6 months today I think she shoud be saying more. I talk to her all day long, tell her where we are going, what we are doing next and when we are eating and taking a bath...you get the picture. I guess I thought since I was so interactive with her that she would imitate sounds sooner. Anyone go though similar situation. Thanks.

My little girl Cecelia has been constipated for 6 days. Her and her twin sister have had this issue since they started meds for reflux several months ago. I have talked with their Doc's regarding this several times (Pediatrician and GI specialist.. also multiply nurses) and have recieved alot of advice such as increased tummy time, juices (apple, prune, and pear), tummy massage, leg pumping, sitz bath, rectal temp, glicerine supository, even filling their nose/throat suctioner with warm water and using it to give an enema (which I tried sunday evening and again last night). The bottom line is it has almost been a week for this poor girl and nothing has worked as it normally does. She is miserable and has spent up to two hours at a time crying and trying to push it out. I talked with her Pediatrician last week regarding this (with no avail) and I know I need a Doc appt (with her GI spacialist) to get this issue resolved. I have spent the last two days on the phone talking to multiply nurses trying to get advice and trying to make an appt. I am wondering if anyone out there can possibly suggest something else so I can try to get her some relief before we get to the Doc. They don't seem to understand the urgency. I am wondering if anyone can help us this evening!!!!

I am trying to determine whether or not my infant has diaper dermatitis. She only has this small patch of red spots around her anus. It almost looks like when you had a blister and it popped and there's no skin covering it. There's a good picture to compare to on this website: http://dermatlas.med.jhmi.edu/derm/result.cfm?Diagnosis=104. It's the second to last picture on the page. Anyone have any suggestions? I've been trying Desitin and it cleared up the "rawness" of the rash, but not these spots. I feel like she's peeing and pooping all the time since she's breastfed, so I change her as often as I can. The diaper changes are a battle, though, because she screams her head off everytime (she has casts on her legs for clubfoot, so I think that's why she cries). I try to let her air out before applying the cream but she just squirms and pitches a huge fit. Anything else I should try?

I have a 6-month old baby girl and over the last couple of months she gets really red and irritated around her mouth. It's almost like a red rash but sometimes get dry patches too. I know she's slobbering alot and dab her mouth constantly and use a cream called baby kisses to help heal it but it seems to never totally go away. Seems like it gets worse when she chews on plastic toys. She has always used a Soothie pacifier and won't take any other. I did put some Desitin clear on it also but was afraid she'd get it in her mouth. Anyone have any suggestions or have this happen with their baby?

Hello Mamas:
We were wondering if anyone out there has the same case as we do. Our baby has her bowel movement at about the same time every morning (4AM), we would change her diaper quietly in the dark and thereafter try to get her back to sleep. Unfortunately, she can never fall back asleep after that. We tried to soothe her every way possible but nothing seemed to work. This has been going for a long time, ever since she was about 3 or 4 months old. Does anyone out there have similar situations with their babies and what do they do to get their babies to go back to sleep? Any suggestions provided is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Let me start by saying it doesn't look like he is constipated. I strictly breastfed my son until almost 6 month old before starting solids. He had no problems up to that point with having a BM, but of course after starting solids he would not go as often like once every 6 or 7 days!! Which I know can be normal when starting solids, but the thing is now he cries and screams when he has one, they do not appear to be hard or clay-like they seem to be soft, but of course are more solid than the breastfed runny BM he is used to. This is my third son and the other two did not have this much difficulty but I also started them at 4 months with the solids and fed baby jar food with this one I waited longer and I am making my own baby food. I now am using prune juice as the liquid in his cereal and he has had a BM for two days in a row, but is still crying pretty hard when it happens. Does anyone have any experience with this? The doctor leaned toward the fact that it was his system getting used to the solids is why it was not as often, but really didn't address the crying when it happens.

advice please mommas, my DS has had this stubborn umbilical granuloma since his cord fell off. it has gotten better, then worse, more irritated, then better, etc; but never infected. The ped has changed her recommendations for treatment at home, first antibiotics, now using alcohol, but to no avail, it keeps oozing and wont heal for good. I am starting to worry as he is beginning to crawl and spending the time doing his baby pushups it is getting more irritated, and soon it will be summer and then we have sand boxes and the beach... ;) and he is able to protest my treatments more effectively as he gets bigger of course... can anyone speak to how to best deal with this? will it ever go away on its own or do we have to use silver nitrate or even surgery? i am thinking of trying another doctor as the first doc to observe it at 3 weeks recommended the silver nitrate at 2 mos... there has to be a way to resolve it for good, isnt there???

Hello mamas,
I feel some sadness writing my request; I'm hopeful some of you will be able to offer some sage advice. My 7 week old daughter seems to connect and smile with everyone except me. At first I thought this was just my perception, but I see now that it is real. I also thought she was just connecting more with her dad than me, until I saw her smiling and maintaining eye contact with almost everyone she meets. I talk, sing, rock, breastfeed, play, make eyes, use voice inflection changes, all the normal stuff. When she is with me, she is either in a frenzy to nurse, peacefully nursing, dozing, or looking around at everything except me. Am I missing something? Does this happen with breastfed babies sometimes (ie am I too familiar and therefore uninteresting?)? I thought babies tended to recognize and be excited about their moms! While my belief is that parenting is more about what I can give than what I get back, it is really disheartening not to have the reward of a few smiles when our daughter seems to freely exchange this great energy with others. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get my son to enjoy bathtime again. My 7-month old son use to love bathtime, but the past few baths he just screams. Even as we lower him into the bath he looks at the water with terror and starts screaming. I'm not sure why this is - nothing bad has happened in any of his baths. The only thing I can think of is that we only bath him 1-2x per week because he gets ezcema - so maybe he forgot what it was like and now hates it? I don't know. But I feel terrible because it seems like we're torturing him every time that we give him a bath and since he has started solids and will be moving around soon we will be giving him more frequent baths. Any suggestions?

My 8 1/2 month old son cries constantly during the day if I am not holding him. I know babies cry, but this can’t be normal. I feel like I have tried everything. I have attempted to let him cry but he's super stubborn and can go FOREVER. I have discussed the problem with my doctor and she suggested early childhood intervention which is more for babies with developmental problems or delays, or other medical issues. But I am exhausted and will try ANYTHING. The nurse that came to my home was wonderful and told me that she thinks my son is super smart and is getting bored. That makes sense but also doesn't help much either. She also thought he might have reflux, all the symptoms she described- spitting up (he doesn't do that a lot but does), breath smells like sour milk, hiccupping after meals, crying wanting to be held, arching back, waking up at night screaming for no reason- my son has them all. I called his doctor and she says that the main concern for reflux is spitting up and since he doesn’t do that much and isn’t losing weight they wouldn’t do anything. So should I take that answer and continue to think his crying is behavioral rather than something medical or should I get a second opinion. I have done the Dr. Mommy research on the internet. You know where you try to diagnosis your child yourself. I have found that some babies can have serious reflux without spitting up. I also found that it can make them extremely fussy. I am just frustrated and want to help my son whether it’s treating his boredom or his reflux. I think it’s a little of both… Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.

I have recently discovered my 8 month old daughter has been losing weight. We were fostering a dog who had giardia and tapeworms and a litter of puppies and I notice some things in her diaper that looked like they might have been worms. I made an appointment to get her checked out and discovered that she's lost a little more than a half a pound in the last 3 or 4 months. We tested her for giardia, pinworms and other intestinal parasites, but the tests all came back negative. I know that this doesn't mean that she absolutely doesn't have them because the eggs might not have been in the sample tested. I've figured that I'll just wait till her 9 month well baby check to see if she's still losing before I dig deeper, however now I'm starting to wonder if that's the right thing to do.
Elisabeth has been exclusively breastfed until 5 months when I started adding homemade baby food to her diet. She can easily put down 18 oz of food in addition to nursing when she wakes up, before and after each meal, at bedtime and 2 or 3 times through the night. She started out above the 95th percentile in weight and at her last well baby appt she dropped down to the 75th. She continues to remain at the 98th percentile for height. I have done some research on breastfed baby growth charts (cuz they grow at different rates than formula fed babies) and it looks like while being in the top percentiles her first 5 months, she's now below the 50th percentile at 8 months. This concerns me!
What seems odd is that other than little hives that don't bother her and just last 15 or 20 minutes, she seems perfectly healthy and thriving. She's hit developmental milestones consistently early and continues to develop at a fast pace. She's active and happy and easy going. She shows no symptoms of ill health other than the weight loss. Without looking at her weight history, she seems like a picture of great health.
I'm having a tough time finding information on weight loss in older infants, particularly while breastfeeding. I'm trying to decide if I'm being overly concerned (since she's otherwise fine) or if I should be more proactive in figuring out what is going on. I know that each baby is different and what is normal varies greatly. Is weight loss ever normal? I know that while developing mentally and physically can pause growth, does it ever cause weight loss? If she shows no other symptoms, could it just be that she's not getting enough to eat (even given the massive amounts that she does eat?)? I realize that everyone has different metabolisms, but could hers be THAT different that she's losing in spite of eating eveyrthing in sight? It just doesn't seem right to me.
Does anyone else have any experience with this? Does anyone have any suggestions for getting to the bottom of what's going on? Other things for me to research, etc?

I have a 8 m/o daughter who will be 9 m/o on 26th. She seems to be doing very well. She is doing perfect on her visits too and no concerns regarding her development for her Ped. She can role from while lying down from back on the floor to lie down on her tummy. She can sit steadily, scoot all over the house (she is very fast in it). She started to stand up steadily by holding on to other things or our hands, walks perfectly by holding the walker(moving truck) or our hands. She is getting better at all these things each day and her falls are getting lesser and lesser by each day.
My concern is when she is lying down then she can't or doesn't sit on her own. She needs somebody's help to help her to get up and sit. She can't do this on her own. But after that she is on her own, she doesn't need any body's support. You will find her scooting all over the house. If by mistake she falls then she will keep crying until somebody helps her to get up and sit. My husband think it's o.k. she will learn when she is ready but I am little concern about it. Is is too early for that concern? Do you guys think she is doing well? Do I need to take her to Ped. or should I wait for her next 12 month regular checkup? She hasn't started scrolling either.

I think the subject line pretty much says it all, but here is more background:
On Aug. 24, I took my then 7-month-old son Michael to the ER with what turned out to be intussusception (telescoping of the small intestine into the large intestine), for which he was given a Gastrografin enema, which partially reduced the telescoping, but not completely, so then he underwent emergency surgery. By the next morning in the pediatric ICU, he had diarrhea, followed that evening by a recurrence of intussusception, for which he was given another emergency enema, this time using barium. He was in the hospital for 5 days, counting the first day in the ER and the operating room. He has had diarrhea ever since.
During these weeks, he has had countless doctor appointments with, and tests ordered by, 3 different specialists - i.e., the pediatric surgeon, a pediatric gastroenterologist (GI) and his pediatrician, each of whom is affiliated with a different hospital network (Children's Memorial, Advocate, Loyola). The pediatric GI from Advocate diagnosed him as having an infection called "c-diff" (c. difficile toxin), for which he was given a 7-day dose of an antibiotic called Flagyl. After finishing the antibiotic, he tested negative for c-diff. He was supposed to have another surgery tomorrow for an unrelated issue (removal of a congenital nevus), but today the surgeon cancelled the procedure since Michael continues to have diarrhea and, in turn, has open sores near the surgical area. The sores are a diaper rash that just won't heal - they are ulcerated/open lesions. The pediatrician said to try Neosporin, which I did, but my son broke out in hives, so now I am using only diaper rash cream (zinc oxide). Today his pediatrician's office faxed me a recipe for a diaper rash cream that is a concoction of A&D ointment, zinc oxide, bacitracin ointment, Maalox or Mylanta liquid, and betadine (optional), so I guess I need to go buy those ingredients ...
Tomorrow my son will be seen by a pediatric GI at Children's Memorial. After all of these doctor visits though, I don't hold out any hope that he will have any answers either. I know I've written a lot here, but does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, etc.? In case it's relevant, I initially breastfed my son, but he was exclusively on Enfamil Lipil formula by the time he was 4 months old, and around 7 months old he began eating jar baby food (Stage 1 and now Stage 2). I have also been giving Michael a probiotic (Saccharomyces boulardii) for 3 weeks now, which a chiropractor/holistic doctor recommended that I give him.

Ocassionally she will prop herself up so she can look around but not for very long and then she returns to screaming. I asked the doctor when she was early 7months and he told me to let her cry and she would progress. She has not progressed. She seems to be developing normally in other areas. She only wants to stand and is finally beginning to move her legs a little so I expect her to be crusing within a month. I just get concerned about not wanting to use her arms and legs.

My 9 1/2 month old son has always been a healthy eater. He has always been in the 95 percentile for weight and height. He had been consistently eating 3 full meals, quaker oatmeal for breakfast, a stage 3/graduate and fruit for lunch and dinner. In the last week he is not wanting to eat, especially lunch and dinner. He shakes his hands and gags. At first I thought he was beginning to become picky- but this does not seem to be the case. I have noticed he is really interested in feeding himself, which I have been promoting with finger foods. My only concern is that he is not eating enough. He is not drinking anymore formula than before. Anyone comments or suggestions regarding this situation are welcome.

Once it warms up, my husband and I love to do outdoor activities, and we don't want to be stuck inside all summer because our son hates it?

hello!! I have noticed that my 9 month old son flaps both of his hands all the time, almost like he is riding a motorcycle. Is this normal? At fist we thought he was learning to wave, but he does even when someone is not waving at him. When we do wave at him, he will start doing it, but he does it alot on his own. when we stand him up, he waves his whole arms. Didn't know what this was...Any ideas?

Hi everyone - my daughter is 9 months now and was diagnosed with acid reflux at 4 months. We went thro several formulas (Parents Choice Soy was the answer) and is still on Axid. So she's always been fussy cos of her discomfort. Now her reflux is under control - no more back arching, doesn't resist formula and no more projectile vomitting. She is now teething - got 2 at the bottom and 4 have cut at the top. But she just seems to be gettting very fussy. I can't even leave her for 2 mins to go to the bathroom w/out her crying. I can barely get thro dishes, she fights sleep even when she's sleepy enough to collapse.
I also had to prop her up at night cos of her reflux and just last week was allowed to lay her flat. So she had been waking up numerous times at night - i guess cos she was getting tired of laying flat. So she has started sleeping MUCH better - gone from waking up to 17 times a night to 5 or 6. But she still screams at night and a pacifier calms her down. I've now stopped giving that to her and just call her name so she gets out of that "subconscious" state and pat her on her chest. Usually she falls back asleep but sometimes i have to pick her up. I know she isn't hungry or wet.
Any suggestions would be SOOOOOO appreciated - sorry for the barrage of questions. I'm just so exhausted and it's making me short tempered. The stress of dealing with her cry so much is getting to me and my husband and i are also arguing a lot more now.
PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!! I do have a retired nurse help me out a few hours a week so i can get some sleep and retain my sanity. Her fussiness is so bad i can't even talk to a friend on the phone for a few minutes to feel better. Doctor has checked her out several times and physically nothing is wrong with her
Additional Note: The reason i want her to get off her paci is that sometimes she gets up to 17 times a night. I just can't do it anymore. Imagine waking up every 45 mins - 1 hour all night then being the one to take care of her all day long (hubby works long hours and my family is too far away). I really appreciate all the tips so far though.

My son is almost 9 months old and loves to pull my hair. My hair length is just past my shoulder and he always seems to get a hold of it. When I hold him he even sucks on it sometimes. Even when it's up in a tight bun, he pulls it out from the top.
He often rubs or pulls on his hair or his grandmothers hair too but is a little too rough with mine.
Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks!

Hi Moms
I have a 9 month old boy who has no desire to roll over. He has done it maybe 10 times but not consistently at all. He loves to sit up and play and is developing well in all other areas. He just won't roll over. I give him lots of tummy time and roll him over back and forth to teach him but he can't do it on his own. He would rather lay on his back or front and cry instead of trying to roll over. Have any of you ever experienced this? Any suggestions?

How do I get my almost-9-month old to crawl on his hands and knees? He's been doing an army crawl for about a month now but is really resisting hands and knees. He'll get up and rock and maybe do one or two "steps" then drops to his belly so he can go faster. I know that some babies will never crawl on their hands and knees before they walk, but he is due for surgery in July which will involve staples in his chest. My worry is that he will try hiss little army crawl after surgery and either rip out the staples or hurt himself so bad he will stop trying to get around altogether. I try working with him every night but his legs are so strong I literally can't keep him on his knees! Any suggestions?

My 9 month old son has recently developed a cough. There are no other symptoms -- no runny nose, no congestion, no fever -- just the cough. It sounds like a wet cough when it hits him, but he's not wheezing or anything like that. My mother in law has had a mean case of bronchitis and walking pneumonia since Thanksgiving and started feeling better so we were around her on Christmas day. Should I be worried that he's picking up her bronchitis? What about allergies? We have 3 dogs in the house -- 2 of them are shedders and drive me insane. But can a baby have pet allergies? He doesn't act like anything is bothering him at all. He's crawling around like normal and into everything and he's sleeping and eating well -- he's lost a lot of interest in his bottles, but the ped told me to expect that at his 6 month check up. So I guess I am just wondering if I should call the Dr or just wait it out and see what happens.
Thanks Moms!

I have been bathing my little girl in the tub since she was about 3 months old - i just find it easier than those baby tubs. I would always sit her in, then lay her down (in shallow water), wash her, then let her sit up and splash around/play. Well last Thursday we had a terrible evening - she wouldn't eat her dinner and I got terribly frustrated and she was overtired and crying by the time we got to the bath, plus I was in a very stressed out state rather than my usual cheerful self. WHen I went to lay her down, she looked at me and started crying and turned over and tried to crawl out of the tub. I quickly finished washing her (a mistake, I probably should have removed her right away but who knew) and got her out. SInce then, the last 4 nights she's fine until I try to sit her down (I haven't tried to lay her down again) in the water, then she starts screaming and clinging to me to get out. I feel so awful, and I haven't been able to wash her properly. Most of all, I don't want her to be afraid of water, or the bath. SHe doesn't seem to be afraid of the water itself, as she doesn't start crying until I sit her down. Tonight we tried the kitchen sink as my mother thought she might feel better there but it was the same drill. I've tried a whole flock of new rubber duckies with no luck. Tomorrow I was thinking I would get in the tub with her and give that a try. Any advice is appreciated, I feel so terrible that I might have caused this frightened reaction and would love suggestions on how to get her past this. I feel like such a bad mother!

Hi moms. I have received so many wonderful words of advice from you all, I thought that I would turn to you all again. I have a friend who had a baby girl at 33 weeks gestation and the baby is now 9 weeks old. The baby was in the hospital and the doctor said that she has the worst case of colick that she has ever seen in her career. They switched her formula and gave her medicine for acid reflux and things seemed to be better for a while. Now, the crying jags have lessened, but she still screams like she is in SOO much pain. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Is there anyone out there willing to give some words of wisdom to my friend who thinks that this will NEVER ever get any better? I'm sure that she has some post-partum depression that she is dealing with on top of all of the baby issues and on top of a husband who thinks that she is "weak"
