14 Month Old Won't Eat Fruit

Chicago, IL

I can't get my son to eat fruit. He has been like this for two months. He hates anything sweet and loves vegies. My pediatrician didn't seem too concerned about it. Were any of your kids like this? What did you do? I am thinking of trying that deceptively delicious cookbook.

19 Month Son Not Eating Enough to Gain Weight

Sacramento, CA

My 19 month old son weighs 17.5 pounds, and has been back and forth to the doctor for over six months now regarding his weight/size. After blood, urine and stool tests the pediatrician said he was not sure why Corey is not gaining weight. He said that Corey weighs less than his fraternal twin (who has always weighed about 2 pounds more), and that's part of the concern. The dr sent us to a GI dr, and she has us giving him carnation instant breakfast three times day, plus try to give him breakfast, lunch and dinner plus two snacks. We have food available all day, and he will nibble, but rarely eats a lot. At his appointment the other day, the GI dr suggested we try an allergy medicine that is supposed to make him hungry. In one month, we have to get him weighed, and if he hasn't gained enough weight in 2 months(she didn't give me a #), she wants him to have a feeding tube (through the nose to his tummy). We do not agree with the feeding tube suggestion, mostly because he's not "sick", and he does eat, he's just little. Has anybody had their child on an allergy pill to gain weight? Was it successful? Do you have any food ideas to help chunk him up?

2 Year Old Doesn't Eat

Modesto, CA

Come meal time, my two year old son won't eat. He'll take a bite or two then declares himself finished. He won't eat breakfast and loves to drink liquids. My husband and I have tried what seems like everything to find something he will eat. The only thing that keeps him going is milk supplemented with Pediasure, vitamins, fruit/vegetable juice and water. Our doctor isn't concerned as our son is gaining weight just at a slower pace. Do you have some suggestions that will encourage him to want to eat? Our doctor isn't concerned as our son is gaining weight just at a slower pace.

2.5 Year Old Son Won't Eat Meat

San Francisco, CA

Does anyone else have this problem? My son will NOT eat any meat except chicken nuggets or mini meatballs. Occasionally he will eat tofu. If I cut up chicken, he says "yucky." I try to hide it in his food and he picks it out. I have even made chicken nuggets from scratch (to be healthier) but he still won't eat them. I haven't tried to puree turkey or beef yet but it may come to that. On another note, he LOVES vegetables. He opens the freezer and pulls out peas and/or broccoli, so I guess I have it good on that side. However, I feel that he needs more protein. Any advice?

6 Month Old "Menu"

Boston, MA

Hi! So my 6 month old little girl just started eating solids in the last month or so. Needless to say she loves them, so far we have had bananas and sweet potatoes. We did start with the rice cereal for a few weeks - she wasn't really impressed with that! But my question is, is it ok to only give her fruits and veggies and leave out the cereal? Also, I'm trying to get her on a good breakfast, lunch, dinner schedule but am having a hard time with the two afternoon feedings. She is in daycare right down the street from where I work so normally I go in there and breastfeed her at lunch (12p) and for the dinner feeding, I don't get home from the daycare pick up until about 6:15 or so - so that seems too late. Anyway, any tips on getting this started would be so helpful! I'd love to hear what some other moms have done. Also, the pediatrician said we could start giving her a sippy cup. I know she's still too little for juice, but would a little water be ok? Thanks so much!

Q

6 Month Old ~ Pediatrician Suggests Eating Only Vegetables and Meats

Kansas City, KS

My daughter turned 6 months old on December 29th and we had her 6 month old shots done on December 30th. She had the flu the week of Christmas and up until then, she ate her veggies like a pro!! After she recovered from the flu, I tried introducing her to fruits, and she didn't want them. So after a few attempts, I tried switching back to veggies just to get her the nutrition she needs until I could ask my pediatrician about it. His response was that you should NEVER feed a baby fruits until they are 9 months old and she should ONLY be eating veggies and meats at this point. So I bought her meats yesterday, and took it to her daycare this morning and I just got a call from my daycare lady, who said that she got about half way through the jar and spit up every bit of what she had eaten. My daycare lady has 3 children of her own and has been doing daycare for a few years now. The state won't even reimburse her for meats until a baby is 8 months old, so that makes me think that you shouldn't be feeding a baby meats until then!! I trust my daycare lady's opinions and have asked her for advice many times since having my baby with her. So I guess I have a few questions here. I guess I just can't believe that a 6 month old should not be eating fruits. Is my pediatrician a quack who doesn't know what he's talking about? He's never done anything to make me mad, per say, but he's never extremely passionate and seems to always be in a hurry. What are your thoughts/suggestions??

8 Month Old Refusing Bottle

San Diego, CA

One of our 8 month old twinfants hasn't been drinking much from the bottle lately. Does anyone have experience with this? It could be a phase, he did this same thing at about 2.5 months. He's eating his solids, but he's not finishing his formula (he normally drinks about 7 oz, but lately it's been about 4-5 oz per bottle 4 times a day), and doesn't seem to like juice or water too much. I'm worried that he will get dehydrated. His diapers are wet, but they are not full when I change them every few hours. I tried giving him a sippy cup to drink from, but he just chewed on the sippy spout thing. We have the boys on the "12 Hour Sleep Schedule" where they eat 4 times a day, and sleep for about 10-12 hours a night. Maybe he's outgrown this schedule??

I'm looking for a real appetite suppresant. I know that the only way to loose weight in permanent way, is eating less and better, and exercise more...my problem is that after 5:00 p.m. I'm really hungry and over eat. Advice Needed for Child Who Spits Out Her Food

Kansas City, MO

When we put her in the high chair she doesn't want to eat. She spits out whatever we give her and then just cries and gets angry. This morning I had eggs, oatmeal, pumkin and grapefruit as options for her to eat, all of which she likes. She tried each item and then spit it out. However, after my husband gave her tupperware to play with, she ate the entire large bowl of oatmeal and half a grapefruit. We continue to tell her that we don't spit food out or throw it on the floor. And we also reinforce that we eat our meals at the table. This started about 4 weeks ago and has gotten worse. At her well check last month she was healthy. The doctor said not to make a big deal about her not eating. He said she will eat when she is hungry and that most kids go through this kind of phase". Should we not give her the tupperware to occupy her hands? How do we deal with the spitting out of food and the anger?

Advice on Weaning Newborn off Nipple Guard

Dallas, TX

4 days ago I gave birth to my third child. He is beautiful, and I'm hopelessly in love with him. When we were in the hospital I had a very difficult time getting him to latch on while breastfeeding. I've breastfed both of my other sons, so I was pretty familiar with the tricks and techniques. I ended up asking the lactation consultant what I should do. She determined that he was a lazy sucker. She recommended that I use a nipple guard. He has done much better with the feeding, and I'm very happy that we've made progress so quickly. However, I do not want him to become dependent on the nipple. One of the benefits of breastfeeding is that you can do it without having to bring extra stuff along. I would love any advice that any of you can give me about how to wean him from using this guard.

And when I went home, I decided that I should try on my winter clothes & to my dismay, NOTHING fit me!!! I can't believe I've gained so much weight in only a year!!! So, besides diet & exercise, is there anything I can do to really jump start the weight loss??? I've been thinking about SlimQuick or Alli, or something to that affect. Of course I want to do it the healthiest way possible, but there's not much time left to fit into my winter clothes. I don't have the funds to buy a new wardwrobe. Anyone Else That's Gone Through This?

Tallahassee, GA

I never imagined that my body would take so long to 'bounce back' after having my son. He is adorable and will soon be a year old. Initially, half the pregnancy weight came off (within a couple weeks of having him). Since then, regardless of working out and eating well, I only lose a few pounds and never beyond that weight. Am I not pushing myself enough? I was active before, during and after my pregnancy. I know we are all different..it was still discouraging watching good friends become very skinny shortly after having their kids. I had a horrible time healing that lasted a few months (just to feel "ok" or "pretty good."). There have been a lot of blessing (as well as stress and drama overload) in the last couple of years. Our family has had a lot of major events occur close together. Is this keeping the weight on? I'm hanging on to my 'skinny clothes' hoping that my hips will go down one day. Not sure how realistic that is..Any advice? What was your experience?

Artificial Sweetners

Allentown, PA

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone had any input. Is Splenda as bad as the artificial sweeters? I have been drinking the arizona diet green tea for about a yea to a year & a half. I thought it was ok because it was suoppose to be made from sugar. I can't have any of the other artificial sweetners because they give me a bad headache as Splenda doesn't. I don't want those checmicals in my body not to mention sometimes my children drink the tea. Now that I'm getting into the more natural health lifestyle (becoming a natural health consultant) it surprised me that Splenda was listed in along with equal, nutrasweet, aspartame & all the others. I was just wondering about it because if so I really think I need to either switch to the reg green tea or use tea bags & make it myself with sugar or stevia. Thank you, J.

Breastfeeding Mom Goes Back to Worlk

Atlanta, GA

I was breastfeeding my daughter while I was home with her for 3 months, except for a bottle that I would pump for my husband to give her mabe once every other day. Now that I am back to work, she is at a babysitters during the day and I am pumping three bottles for her each day. However, she seems to be cranky when I try to breast feed the last couple of days. Do you think she is liking the ease of the bottle and not having to work as hard? I am not ready to give up on breastfeeding since my goal is 6 months, but my feeding time has doubled the last couple days due to her fussiness throughout the feeding. I know that I still have milk in there for her, because I thought maybe she wasn't getting enough. I feed her twice before I take her to day care (5am and 8am) and sometimes she only has 2 bottles over there, but then I feed her from 4pm on for the day. So most of her feedings are right from the breast. But I think she is getting lazy, any advice from someone who has gone through this?

Can a 1 Year Old Overeat?

Dallas, TX

I watch a little boy for my friends during the day. He just turned a year old. I have NEVER seen a kid eat like he does! He eats ANYTHING you give him. He can out eat my 7 year old, my 3 year olds and even me and then cry for more! He has eaten until he threw up before and will cram food in his mouth so fast he gags on it. He acts like he has never eaten before everytime he eats. I am concerned for him, he is 27lbs(90% for weight and 50% for height) a month ago, so he is very chunky. His parents are not small people and since he is a first child I don't think they think there is anything wrong with him. I have mentioned to them that it is odd he eats that way but they just laugh saying "he is going to eat them out of house and home." Does anyone know a kid this young who eats like this? Oh, and he is still not walking yet, so he is not burning that many calories yet. In fact, he just started crawling 2 months ago. Thanks!

Can You Give a Child Too Much Milk?

Seattle, WA

My son is almost 15 months old and loves loves LOVES to drink whole milk over any other liquid. We offer him water and juices, but he doesn't care to drink them. Many times he will shake his head and point to the refridgerator for "the goods". We have tried different kinds of sippy cups, cups with straws, etc... He is a very healthy solid toddler with good eating habits. As a child I was raised on whole milk (my family of 5 had 4 gallons delivered every week!) I have extremely good bones/bone marrow (I know this from surgeries) I do feel that my milk intake as a child had a lot to do with it. My question for my son is, can you give a child too much milk? He's not having any problems with constipation, his bowel movements are regular. Should we be cutting him back? Or is this not something we need to worry about? His 15 month check up is coming up in the next few weeks and I plan to ask the doctor about this, but it would be nice to have some feedback. Thanks!

Change in Stools.

Dallas, TX

Ever since my son was born, I've had this weird obsession with poop. I know this is a trait of being a new mom, but I thought it was done and overwith until about a month ago. My son's stools have started to resemble that of a goat. They're pebbly-like. He does poop normal about 3 times a week, but the rest of his poops are just little semi-hard pebbles. Is this normal? He's been on organic cow's milk since he was 12 months (now he's 15). He poops everyday too. Could it be a mild case of constipation? Any ideas on how to make his stools softer? Thanks Moms :]

Constipation

Cleveland, OH

My 2 year old son has recently been constipated on several occasions to the point where he is in tears because it hurts so much (which breaks my heart). I know that this is a result of his diet, but I have been unable to get him to eat anything that will assist with this problem. I've tried giving him mandarin oranges, grapes, corn, broccoli....etc but he refuses to eat them. I've even tried fiber bars, but again he refuses to eat them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of foods I could try to give him that he might actually eat that would help with this problem? I'm not interested in trying to force him to eat something. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

DHA Omega 3 Vitamins

Dallas, TX

I was wondering how many moms out there give your kids Vitamin A supplements? I have recently started to give my kids Nordic Naturals DHA supplements. So far they both have been responding great. Their hair is shinier and there skin is softer. Both of them suffer from eczema and I have noticed a huge improvement in their skin. The one drawback I have noticed is my son is starting to smell like fish. It was comical at first but now it's getting a little yucky to our senses. I was wondering if their was anyone out there going thru the same thing and how you handle it. He only gets a 1/2 tsp daily while my DD gets 1 tsp. It is strawberry flavored and they love taking it. I have tried both the liquid and chewable capsules. The smell seems to be coming from his pores. I am trying to figure out if he is just spilling some on himself when he chews it or if it really is just coming out his pores.

Diabetes?

Rochester, MN

My 2 1/2 year old daughter is giving us a little scare lately. For the past week, she has been eating CONSTANTLY. She has been waking me up at 5am asking for something to eat - and then she is asking for food all day at daycare. It is amazing how much she has eaten in the past week. She is also drinking tons of liquids - she has a meltdown if I tell her no milk until dinner. On Wednesday, she had 2 glasses of juice and 2 glasses of water, just at snack time at her daycare. Daycare became concerned yesterday because in addition to the eating, she had thrown up once but did not have any kind of fever. She was also sleeping a lot and seemed week. I called the Mayo Clinic nurse line and they were very concerned and wanted us to the see the pediatrician right away. The pediatrician thought she seemed fine, from a viral/bug standpoint but wanted to test the blood sugar. We also weighed her and she has maintained the same weigh since Christmas. She is at 29 pounds and is tall and thin. Her blood sugar came back at 80. The dr. says normal is 70-100. So, would this seem a bit on the low side, since she had eaten just an hour before the test? Should I still be concerned about diabetes or can I breath a sigh of relief? Is there anything else that I need to be worrying about or asking my doctor about? My daughter has had an unremarkable health history and has always fallen right around the 50th percentile for height and weight. She eats a pretty well balanced diet with occasional junk food/fast food.

Do You Recommend Low-carb Diets or Weight Watchers?

Houston, TX

Just wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience with low-carb diets? My mom, aunt, and cousins have done very well with the South Beach/revised Atkins way of eating--lean protein and good carbs (low-glycemic veggies, whole wheat pasta, brown rice), which is inspiring to me. My cousin has lost 18 pounds in two and a half months, and my mom lost 40 pounds five years ago and has kept it off. I was just wondering if anyone has had success with this and found it to be doable while raising little kids. I'm trying to decide between this and Weight Watchers, which appeals to me because of the flexibility of food options. I would really appreciate any advice and/or to hear about your experiences. Thank you so much.

Doc Says to Start Rice Cereal at 4 Mo

Philadelphia, PA

Hi moms, At my son's 4 month check up appt this morning, the doctor recommended starting rice cereal. I'm just a bit weary of this and here is why.... Brayden was born 3 1/2 weeks early, and I have noticed in the last few months that he is slightly behind in his developmental milestones- Not anything to worry about as he catches up quickly. He is also in the low percentiles for growth, but again, I was told that he is within normal limits and that it takes a little time to "catch up" when they are preemies. ALSO, Brayden also has ezcemca that flares up with certain foods that I eat. I have been on a soy, dairy, egg, wheat/gluten and peanut free diet since he was 3 months old. We have seen a big change in his flare ups since I took out the "offending" foods, with help from hydrocortisone creams. This being said, I don't think I feel comfortable starting him on cereal and baby foods just yet. I thought this was done around 6 months (although many start earlier...) Considering he is slightly "behind" in growth and development, is his body and digestive system necessarily ready to try this? I've never experienced him being hungry after nursing, so I know he's getting what he needs to be full... I'm just concerned about bombarding his body with new things before he's really ready. Is it OK to wait a bit longer before starting cereal? Are there any advantages to starting now verses waiting? *side note* I haven't been happy with this doc (she's a young, new doctor, with no chilidren) and I don't think she looks at each child as an individual. it seems like she just follows the text books... :( I have seen other doctors in the practice who i like better, but I had to schedule with this particular doc this time because of scheduling issues... any advice is appreciated!

A friend of mine has a niece who was diagnosed with dysphagia, so she needs to have thickener added to any liquids so she is able to swallow it. Most of the thickeners seem to be corn starch, so we are wondering if there are any alternatives (especially healthier/more natural). Thanks!

Failure to Thrive

Denver, CO

My 9 1/2mo. old is being classified as a failure to thrive. Aarg! I come to you, tired, and out of ideas, for your advice. I am adding things like sour cream, cheese, and oils (flax and olive) to all of her meals, sometimes even butter to add calories. She is drinking formula (as well as nursing) these days, and still she is continually dropping farther off of the growth chart! What am I missing? She eats pirates booty, but I have been limiting it because it seems like she'd rather eat that than food. She drinks no more than 5oz of juice a week, and very little water (per our pediatrician). She is just barely 15lbs. She eats everything I offer her from Ethiopian to pasta and meat sauce. She eats what I would consider a good amount for her age (not size) and eats her meat too! The only thing is milk. She doesn't really want much of it. She'll drink 10-16oz a day in addition to nursing, which is about 1/2 of what the doc said she should be drinking. She doesn't seem to care for yogut much, but we keep trying every couple of weeks! PS She is healthy happy and meeting her milestones on time! HELP!

Food Allergy Questions

St. Louis, MO

Hello, I am 2 months away from being a stepmom to a 9 year old boy. Last week he was diagnosed with some food allergies and I want to be able to help him the best way possible. His allergies are pretty extensive though so I thought it might help to ask for advice from others who are in the same situation. Any advice, recipes, good grocery store suggestions, etc. would be appreciated. Here are SOME of his most troublesome allergies: Sesame Seeds (this is the worst allergy), wheat, soy, corn and peanuts. These ingredients are in everything so we are at a loss as to what to feed him. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Food Intolerance

Birmingham, AL

I have a 6 month old, who when you feed her food, of any kind, shows all of the signs of intolerance. The 2 times I have tried feeding her food she ends up with a cold and an ear infection. Does any body have any ideas on what could be causes this. I think for some reason she is just not ready for food, but the pediatrician thinks the colds are not related to the food. He says I should keep feeding her. I am just really unsure what to do. If she gets one more ear infection then we sart talking about tubes and I really do not want that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Food Intolerances Galore

Austin, TX

My son is 28 months old and despite my best efforts doing an elimination diet while nursing, limiting both of our diets (I ate rice, beans, veggies for 6-12 months), trying specific carb diet, various supplements (dairy-free probiotics, digestive enzymes, fish oil, cod liver oil), various doctors (chiropractors, craniosacral therapy, western practice, gastroentrologist, Peoples Rx, etc.), etc. my son still gets frequent diarrhea and eczema on his face. I am praying that someone can recommend some type of doctor and/or naturopath (DO) who can tell me exactly what my son needs - his dietary needs, supplements, if he's deficient in nutrients, test him for candida/yeast and parasites, etc. I'm tired of guessing what's wrong, trying to fix him myself and don't know how to fix him at this point. He only eats eggs, meats, raisins, applesauce, bananas, and rice products (crackers). In addition to his limited diet, he's VERY picky and weird about food texture and colors. He's never been vaccinated nor had antibiotics. We are by no means wealthy thus it's been difficult to find a natural doctor who we can afford. My son has Unicare and they don't cover DO's in town.

Getting My Daughter to Eat Until She Feels Full

Portland, WA

my daughter is 5 years old. she used to be a great eater but not so much anymore, especially at dinnertime. if we don't make her eat, she will invariably get up in the middle of the night because her stomach hurts. i got tired of it so i finally told her that she should have eaten more at dinner and sent her back to bed. she got up in the morning very pale and nauseous so i had to keep her from preschool. eventually she perked up after eating and was fine the rest of the day. from then on, i decided to make her eat food so this won't happen but how do i get her to eat until she's full? there was just an article on babycenter about specifically not forcing your child to eat: http://parentcenter.babycenter.com/0_how-to-avoid-making-meals-a-power-struggle_64322.pc?Ad=com.bc.common.AdInfo%4059c7ba31 so what do i do? i don't want to create problems in the future but need her to eat now. she will even not eat enough of a food she loves, just because she doesn't want to sit at the table anymore. i'm not worried about her being malnourished because she does eat throughout the day however i can't have her missing school because she won't eat at dinnertime.

Help! My Child Will Only Eat Chicken Nuggets and Crackers!!!

How Can I Encourage My Baby to Eat?

Seattle, WA

I need advice, tips, knowlege and any other info! I have a 10 month old daughter who is a real challenge when it comes to food. She has never been a good eater and always 'fought' it for the most part. We have small phases or days when it goes well, but for the most part she is just picky and not wanting to eat. I have discovered she is not into baby food, but likes finger food more. She also wants to feed herself, which I let her do as much as possible. She loves crackers and cheese (who doesn't?) and peas, but most other foods are hit & miss. What I need help with is how to turn eating into a 'fun' thing for her. If we are out and about, or there is distraction she'll eat great. But at home in the highchair, its become a negative thing. I try singing, talking, music and she just whines and cries. I never force her but just give up and try again later. Its so discouraging and frustrating. Any ideas or suggestions?

How Can I Get My One Year Old Daughter to Drink More Milk?

Los Angeles, CA

Hello! My darling daughter just turned one and I am now trying to get her to drink regular milk. I am still breastfeeding and she'll drink a little formula from a cup. The doctor is not satisfied with her growth. She has gone down to the 3rd percentile in weight! She is also short (5th percentile), but I am short and my husband is not that tall. The doctor said I need to get her to drink more milk to help her grow. My question is how often do you offer milk? and when? Right now, she just drinks her formula with her meals. Do I give her milk in between meals, without a snack or before or after a meal? And once she has drunk some milk from a cup, can I refrigerate it and offer it to her another time? If so, for how long is the milk good? Thanks in advance for your advice!

How Much Should a 14 Mo Old Eat

Sacramento, CA

My 14 mo old can eat like no other. She never turns food away. I always just end up deciding she's had enough. And even if she has just finished her meal/snack, if she see's someone else eating, she yells for some. She has Down Syndrome, although I don't think that has anything to do with how much she eats. I also have 2 1/2 year old twins and she eats more than both of them put together. Sometimes she seems really uncomfortable, especially in the middle of the night, and I really think she could have a tummy ache (or be teething, or an ear ache, etc.). Does anyone have any idea of what size portions a child this age should be eating?

How Much Should My 6 Month Old Be Eating and Sleeping?

Detroit, MI

I have a wonderful 6 month old son. How much baby food should he be eating? I nurse him about every 3 hours all day, the longest he goes is 5 hours from about 8pm till about 1am. I try to give him the baby Oatmeal mixed with bananas in the morning but he spits most of it out. I also give him some kind of veggie baby food around 2, same thing, spits most of it out. I don't remember how much my daughter ate when she was that age, but I know for sure, she was sleeping through the night! Shouldn't he already be sleeping through the night? We put him to sleep around 8pm in his crib. He wakes up around 1am, I bring him in our bed and nurse him. He usually wakes up around 4, I feed him again, and then we wakes up a few times and won't go back to sleep until he's got the boob in his mouth, lol. He doesn't really eat, he just kinda uses it as a pacifier. I've tried giving him a paci, but he doesn't want it?!?! I feel like there is something I'm doing wrong because he can't sleep through the night :(

Impurities in Parent's Choice Formula

Sheboygan, WI

We've have been using the Walmart brand "Parent's Choice" organic infant formula (powder form) for a couple months now. A few times now we've noticed some black or dark brown clumps in the mixed formula, about the same size as the clumps of tan formula you tend to see before the formula is fully dissolved. However, these dark clumps never dissolve. We've experienced this with two different cans, although possibly from the same lot. Has anyone else noticed anything like this? For now, we're switching back to Earth's Best to be on the safe side. Earth's Best was our initial selection, and we've never had problems with it. When we learned of Parent's Choice, we switched because it was less expensive and seemed equivalent, but now I'm not so sure.

Losing My Mind! Eating Is an Endless Battle with 2 1/2 Year Old!

Atlanta, GA

My son is 2 1/2 and it is a constant battle to get him to eat. Im told when he is in daycare he eats fine. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner i get full on resistance. He whines and cries at the dinner table, so i bought hima smallchair and table like at school and he does the same thing, he refuses to eat, i try feeding him and he clamps his mouth shut and screams. I have tried switching food to the ones similar in daycare, or those kid cuisine meals, i have made him everything from pasta to rice to pizza. Nothing. I worry because hes a pretty thin kid (his pediatrican says hes perfectly fine in weight) But i feel as some days he barley eats anything at all. I find myself very frustrated and angry at him because all of our meals turn into 1-2 hours battles. I have sat with him to eat and gave him fun plates, cups, utensils, i have made shapes and funny faces out of food. ive even tried the whole if you eat you will get dessert. My blood pressure rises when its time to eat. Is this normal? Help!! :)

Low Milk Supply and Herbal Supplements

Columbus, OH

I am exclusively breastfeeding my almost 5 mo old son. He has dairy and soy intollerances (blood in his stool and diarhea). Other than that, he is a big, healthy boy (off the charts on almost all categories). Developmentally, he seems ready to start solids (plenty of saliva, interest in mom and dad eating, chewing on everything, and getting up in the middle of the night to eat when he was previously sleeping through the night). The pediatricians don't want him to start because of his allergy/intollerance issues. Unfortunately, my milk supply isn't enough to sustain him these days. I have some frozen milk that I use to supplement, but that won't last long. I stay very hydrated, and I've been pumping every two hours when I'm away from him, but that isn't really helping. I've tried taking More Milk Plus, but I think my son is having a reaction to it (very runny green pooh)--it is made with Fenugrek which is related to soybean. A lactation consultant suggested Shatavari but it comes in a capsule and capsules are usually made with some kind of soy ingredient, plus, I don't know of a reliable source to get it. I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can offer.

Milk Intake Advice

Los Angeles, CA

Well, it happened. My daughter (1 this week) just refused nursing this past Friday night and has refused every morning and evening feeding since. I'm a bit heartbroken and yet feel liberated too! Here's my problem, although she's a great eater, she won't drink milk/formula of any kind. She's a big water drinker but nothing else. I do add formula to her iron fortified cereal both morning and before bed so I know she's at least getting some protein and calcium but experts say she should be drinking 2 cups of milk a day. Any advice? This kid never took a bottle or paci and only water from her sippy or big girl cup, won't even drink juice. I'm heading back to work this week and will have to advise my mom-in-law, mom, and nanny how to get milk in this kid. I really appreciate all of your experience and have learned so much from this network.

Hey all, I have a question. My 19 mo old does not care for whole milk. I have tried mixing flavors in it and everything. I make sure she gets calcium through other sources every day like she loves chees sticks, yogurt, ice cream, juice with calcium in it, oatmeal with milk instead of water etc. I have recently noticed though that if the milk is 2% she will drink more of it than if it is whole milk. I heard that the whole milk is just for the fats to help them with weight gain. Is this true. Is it ok to let her just have 2% instead if it means I can get more calcium in her? How much dairy should she be having? I have heard 2-3 oz a day and then others I see having noting but milk all day everyday.

I've had to continue giving her pureed (or baby food) fruits and veggies or else she would never have them in her diet. She will eat ANY fruit or veggie just as long as it's pureed.
