My neighbor just hosted her daughter's (& a friend) birthday this past Friday night. I'm not sure if they had pizza or what first but they had a scavenger hunt where they had to go around the neighborhood and look for a variety of items. Items were a purple sucker, white gumball, yellow birthday candle, a balloon, grade school coozie cup, grade school tattoo, pink tissue, Target shopping bag, yellow freeze pop.....you get the idea! The girls had a great time with it and were given a certain time limit plus only certain houses that they were allowed to go to (circular pattern or street from the birthday person's house).

I noticed the next morning that there was a tent in the backyard so they also slept out there amongst the stars (it was a beautiful night). I saw some of the girls the next day and they said they had a blast.

The only thing --- if you do this, please give a 'heads up' to the neighbors that they might have giggling girls coming to their door --- we weren't notified of it and were just lucky to be home. We had just gotten home and I was ready to relax when the doorbell rang.

This is something that has worked out pretty well for many that I know if your young teen is a girl. At this age, they are trying makeup and wanting to be more "grown up" and sometimes they listen more to someone other than their Moms, especially if that person is a professional. I do Mary Kay facials for many young teen parties (no sales pitch). The girls have fun, feel pampered and "grown up" while at the same time learning that it is more important to take care of their skin than to wear a lot of makeup.......but they also get to try a little color and learn that less is better. Again,No sales pitch. If this is something you want to check out, give me a call at 636/326-2911 or email me at ____@____.com. I would be happy to help.

the aquatic center on Johnson Dr would be fun or indoor arcade like powerplay, bowling, sounds like a drag but when friends get together anywhere they end up having a ball!

We have done crafting parties for example: we have made tied pillows out of fleece, decorated plates, stamped cards/pins, tie dyed stuff etc. I have done spa parties where we made heat/cold packs, soap, bath salts etc.

We have watched chick flicks and eaten pizza. Or try a kidnapping and take the kids to breakfast or for a midnight snack and it is of course come as you are.

One of my favorite birthday parties as a preteen was at a hotel. You can book it at a hotel that has a pool and let her invite 2-3 of her closest friends. We got to swim and order in food and then spend the night. Of course my mom was always there.

Another thing I have seen a lot of kids doing recently is going to nice restaurants. Depending on your budget you can let her choose a couple friends and go out to a nicer dinner.

If she wants to have a few more at her party, you can do a mystery party. They make "How to Host a Mystery" games for teens called "How to host a teen mystery." It is for 8-10 people I think. It includes everything you need for the party except food.

If she wants to have a big party or a boy-girl party, just having a few snacks and a CD player in an open room would probably be sufficient.

I've done a spa party where the girls paint fingers and toes and get a facial, dance party where we rented a room at the community center for $15 and the kids danced and had dance and limbo contests, slumber parties are always popular and they can make their own pizza, bowling party with the black light bowl late times are great fun too. Good luck and God Bless.

I think the paint your own pottery idea is Great. Then maybe home or out for some pizza, cake or make your own ice cream sundaes. Or a "spa day" @ home; facials, hair, nails.

Happy Birthday to your daughter.

In Shawnee we have a civic center, I rented it for my daughters 12th birthday for $30 per hour I rented it for 2 1/2 Hours for $75 I bought pizza from Cicis and brought in pop and chips and cake. We had a dj but it was a friend .You could Just Take a I-pod with speakers or a cd player and have a dance there .ask for the room with the windows on the southside. Its huge. You can have over 100 people if you want ,Good luck from S. in Shawnee. The extra half hour was for cleanup time which you do have to include in your alloted time period.

My daughter is going to be 14 on her birthday and I am leaning toward having one of two things

1- taking a bunch of friends to the $2 theater and seeing a movie then coming back here for pizza

2- taking her and one friend to one of those paint your own pottery places.

Another fun idea is if she's into the Disney stars get the movies they are in and just have a fun day of watching the movies and pigging out.

If your Daughter is athletic or interested in sports, you could have an Olympic birthday party since we just witnessed a spectacular 2008 Chinese Olympics. I did this for one of my Daughters some time ago and it was a huge success. We had everything outdoors. Made up games and made gold, silver and bronze medals for each event. We ended up with everyone getting a prize for coming to the Olympic party games ( I got beach towels on sale in August). The games were silly races made up games, but the girls really got into it. The most fun we had was a relay race. we took two old suitcases and filled them with clothes, including hats, gloves, big shoes and scarves. The players had to run to the suitcase, put every piece of clothes on properly, then run a short laid out course, take the clothes off, put them back in the suitcase and then run back to the start and tag the next runner who followed suit. It was a blast! With the Olympics just finishing, you could decorate in Chinese.

Mystery Dinners are great for teen girls. We've done a couple of dinners so far... They've been a great hit!
Just get on line a google Mystery Dinners. The ideas are endless... You can go with a theme and then decide on food to go with that same theme. You have to be alittle creative with the names for each of the food items, but it is so much fun to plan and they seem to really enjoy it!
Good Luck!!!

I took my son (for his 13th)and 4 of his friends and rented a local hotel room, ordered pizza and had a slumber party away from home. I made sure to select a hotel that likes kids, has a working indoor pool and has a contential breakfast, that way the kids are not bothersome to the other guests and I send them home with a full tummy.... They had an absolute blast and the best part for me, other than picking upso we did not look like pigs, the cleaning was left to the hotel staff. No bathrooms to clean, no beds to make, WONDERFUL!

My daughter just turned 13 last month. She is very into drama and loves her drama class. So we invited her friends over and played a clean version of "Who's Line is it Anyway" (the improv game). She and her friends had a great time. We even videoed it so the girls all got a DVD of their "performances".

I don't know what kind of daughter you have. Is she a girly girl or is she a tom boy? If she's a girly girl she could invite some of her friends over and you could do facials, pedicures, etc. Make or order pizza, watch movies, etc. Simple, but fun!

Good Luck!

surprise parties ROCK: we've done it both directions ....where the BD guests are picked up & taken to a surprise location OR where the BD kid is blindfolded & taken to a fun location. The other parents love getting in on the event! In fact, we even did this to my husband once & he had a BLAST trying to figure out where we were headed.

We were at Thunderbird Bowling Alley this weekend for their Extreme Bowling. There were several birthday parties happening and the kids looked like the were having fun. The early session run from 8:30 to 10 so the girls could still get home at a decent hour and you wouldn't have to clean up. Just remember to stop by the Dollor Tree for lots of glow-in-the-dark accessories.

I've given this suggestion before, I don't know if anyone has ever tried it, but here goes. All the girls really want to do is to hang out together and eat some snacks. In most respects, the activities aren't that important to them. So, make the activities meaningful. Have them make Christmas cards for soldiers overseas. Have them make fleece blankets for a nursing home or shelter. Have your daughter pick a cause and see what they could do about it. If she is VERY generous, she may opt to have her friends bring the materials in lieu of gifts. My guess is she will remember that party and may trigger a habit of giving.
