Can you embroider a handkerchief with his initials and put a $15 Home Depot/Lowes/Best Buy gift certificate in it? I think what you are doing is a great personal touch!
I know it's still 3-4 months away, but the time will go faster than we think and I don't want to be scrambling at the last minute. My son's principal (male) and assistant principal (female) have been AMAZING. I want to be sure to give them a little gift at xmas time to show my appreciation for them.
So, for the assistant principal I thought I would hand embroider some pillow cases for her. It shouldn't take me all that long to do and I know that most people are amazed at them, as hand needle point is a dying art.
So, for the principal I want to do something, but I don't think flowerly pillowcases are something that would be a good gift for a male :-) Any suggestions on a personal gift that doesn't break the bank? Something sort of general since I don't know him well enough to know what his hobbies are etc.
Thanks mamas
Added: I guess I should specify that I do know them a bit better than a typical hi, how are you... I know her well enough to have been in her office the other day in tears and she was so kind. Today he came up to me and said, we believe in you and are behind you. So, my desire to give a gift is stemmed from their support in a matter that had come up... Kind of a vague description, but it explains why I want to do something to show my appreciation.

Seriously, I think it's inappropriate. For both of them.
A handwritten card of thanks is the acceptable way to go.
How about some 'manly' dish towels with embroidered initials? That way it is similar to assistant principal...but 'manly'!
Best Luck!

For Principals~
I always gave bottles of Sparkling wine. Female or Male.
Then with Gold pens I wrote, "Happy Holidays and New Year!!!"
Never had 1 complaint,
General gift...maybe engrave something like "Principle of the year 2011" on a pen or something that could be placed in a frame.
You sound artistic, not sure though I would invest that talent on two people you don't know for certain would appreciate embroidered pillows much less other embroidered items. It's a nice idea but I would keep the gift less personal.. Gift cards are nice (have you seen either one drinking tea or coffee) bottle of wine is nice even some chocolate.. I used to go all out for my son's teachers , janitors and anyone else who my son knew at the school.. now.. this year (also at a new school) I plan on toning it down.. maybe a nice card from our family and perhaps a gift card.. but I won't be buying for the principal or other school administrators like I did in the past.. best to have good strong boundaries when it comes to that stuff.. I learned this the hard way..
whatever you decide, best of luck
I love the idea of embroidering the school logo on a tshirt or three button shirt for the principal. That way you use your skills but don't make it too girly.
Get a polo or tshirt and embroider it. You could do the school mascot or name. When I was teaching middle school a mom made shirts for her son's team. The math teacher's said math and had numbers, ruler and an apple around it. The English teacher got a book on her shirt. For the science teacher she put a beaker and goggles and the social studies teacher got a globe. They were really neat. Simple, not overdone. It was just the size of a small patch. Both the male and female teachers wore theirs often.
