Borrow some from the library....see what YOU like and what you think you'd stick with. Then you know what to buy.
I want to lose about 20 pounds and gain muscle in the abs and thighs primarily. I am so confused about what to buy: Tony Horton, Jillian Michaels, The Firm and I am sure there are many other choices.
At first i wanted Insanity, then researched p90x, now looking at Power 90. But that is for an "athlete" after 90 days which I am not! Now I am looking at Firm 360 or First Express in 30 but with a $120 price tag it is not appealing. I see where you can buy individual dvd's for different things also.
I have Zumba, the ball, and cords. I am not sure the reason why I never do something for more than a week. Single mom busy kind of life, so that is why I thought a crash course would do it for me. I have looked for all of these on craigslist (there are none) and Ebay (hard to trust what you will get). Any thoughts?

I have The FIRM Ultimate Fat Burning workout. It's great when I do it at least 4-5 times a week. I also have trouble with consistency. I have also used Tae-Bo. It was a great workout. I had it originally on VHS, then I bought it again on DVD. One of my kids lost it a few years ago, and I've been too stubborn to pay another $30.00 for it, or whatever it costs. I probably should though since I had a lot of success with it.
I second the idea to borrow some from the library first and try them before buying.
Absolutely start with Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. It's a great workout and it is only a half an hour. Once you do this for a while THEN look at the other more serious, and costly, workouts.
I am not sure where Cape Coral is, but I am in the Orlando area and I have The Firm stuff on Craigslist:

Also, I want to recommend Kettleworx. It is ~30 minutes, 3x a week and it really works. If you have cable, you might want to try the exercise on demand channel. It has lots of free workouts and it is nice to be able to mix it up and choose what you want to do that day. you can also find free workouts on youtube.
Good luck!
I"ve been doing the 10 minute working out series. Because they are short, I am being very consistent with doing them. I usually do at least 2 workouts (20 minutes), but most days I am doing 30-40 now. I like that I can mix them up. I just stream them off of Netflix.
I use to be a big believer in The Firm --before kids..but the workouts are just too long! Maybe when the kids are older, but i really think short and sweet is the way to go.
Tracy Anderson's Metamorphosis is the best!
The Firm is good.
It works the whole body and is toning at the same time that it is cardio workouts.
P90x is INTENSE. But it works. But... you have to follow it and do it EVERY day. And it is expensive.
My Husband was doing that.
The Firm, has many type of workouts and length of workouts.
It is flexible in that sense.
And the price points vary.
Look at Amazon.
Or the "Tae Bo" work outs by Billy Blanks is good too.
I would also get some light weights.
Like 5 pounds or 3 pounds or even 1 pound.
These easily lends itself to utilizing it in workouts per the videos.
AND it will tone you up.
I always rented videos (lol I am aging myself!) before buying them.
I would suggest trying the library but I don't think they have a very good/up to date selection. I bet there's a lot on Netflix.
My favorites were the 20 to 30 minute "target" videos (cardio, core, stretch, etc.) Easier to do in spurts and more interesting to mix it up. The kickboxing ones were a lot of fun :)
I have digital cable and there is a workout channel in the 'On Demand' channels. It's worth a look.
Check out Goodwill and other thrift stores I have found some for around $3 - $4. This way if you don't like them you haven't invested much.
Just go running, it will burn fat and tone your legs and you'll soon be happy with the way your entire body looks.
Lindsey Brin has some great workout dvd's where you can choose the workout length to be anywhere from 10-45 min. in length. The workouts are intense and get results, they show you how to modify the exercises as well for when you're first beginning.
Not sure if The Firm dvd's have changed, but I had a friend who I tried doing them with back in college several years ago...I hated them.
If you're bound to the house, get a video.
I like Denise Austin.
If you're not bound to the home, go jogging. Start off slow/short distance.
The best way to start out is walk/jog. Brisk walk, jog for a few mins, back to brisk walk, jog again for a few mins. Keep doing this cycle. You'll eventually work up to where you can just jog if you want.
Then at home you can do abs, push-ups, lunges or weights w/light hand held weights to tone.
