Hello,
I am in the Tarzana area and my Pediatrician's office at Encino Tarzana Hospital does not offer the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccines separate (only as the combined MMR). Do you know where I can have my son get these vaccines separate? He is now 2.
Thanks,
J.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice and comments. I did call to speak with a couple of the pediatricians, then my own and ultimately decided to do the combined MMR. My doctor pointed out that the separate shots meant 3x the preservative which I had not thought of. Since my little guy hasn't had any shots for over 6 months now we decided the combined would be better for him. Again, thanks for your help. J.

You should definitely see a pediatrician who will do this for you, if that is what you want, and many will. My son goes to UCLA Santa Monica Pediatrics and one of the reasons why I chose them is because they are flexible with vaccines and they do offer the MMR separately if you request it.

I would HIGHLY recommend The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears (in book stores, on Amazon.com, etc.) for anyone with questions about vaccines. It is the most comprehensive and non-judgmental book I've seen, with information about all of the standard AAP scheduled vaccines. It isn't for or against vaccinations, it just gives you all of the medical facts and it decribes all of the vaccines one by one. It also offers an "alternative" vaccination schedule that a lot of docs are now allowing their patients to follow. If you go to their website (www.askdrsears.com) they have a short list of docs who will separate vaccines or who believe in other alternatives. The vaccine section of that website also has some good information.

Good luck! Do your own research and trust your instincts on this hot topic.

Our doctor offers it as 3 separate vaccines. Live vaccines must be given one month apart so it will take 2 months to get them all in.

Drs. Gerald Whitman, Rachel Kramer, and Monique Araya in Beverly Hills. They are all good doctors.

I have only heard of MMR as a combined vaccine. dr Jay Gordon in the SM area does not encourage vaccinating (i've heard this from many of my friends whose kids are his patients). Their office may be able to give you some info on this....

J.,
Check Dr. Lauren Feder's office on Wilshire in LA. She is a homeopathic MD and treats children too. Also, check with Dr. Paul Fleiss on Hillhurst in Los Feliz. We go to him and we didn't vaccinate at all. He supports either choice and recommends vaccination. Since he accepts patients who don't, he may divide up the MMR. I am happy to hear moms who are researching more and more and standing up for what they want to do with their babies!

My doctor does. She's in Tarzana and her name is Dr. Reiner. Her number is ###-###-####. I just had my fifteen month old get the measles only and the others will follow in a few months.

My son is 16 months and we have opted to delay the MMR vaccine, probably until age 2. Our PPO doctor is James Weidman in West Hills. He recommends the regular schedule (of course) but he is pretty flexible. We actually have to get our vaccinations through our HMO and we go to Valley Pediatrics. Our first doctor there was not supportive at all and yelled at me. Our new HMO doctor is ok with our choice to space out the shots and delay some. James Wiedman informed us that the vaccine is available separately and he will administer it but the parent has to purchase the vaccine from the pharmacy separately. It is costly. He stated that it is too expensive for him to purchase for just a few patients. I am sure he could tell you more about the details and how to go about buying it if you wanted to...

I highly recommend Dr. Paul Fleiss on Hillhurst in Los Feliz who can give you pharmaceutically unbiased info on vaccinations.

Do not let doctors (or anyone for that matter) yell at you or make you feel like you are a bad mother just because you are inquiring about doing what is best for your child.

I've had the same experience with numerous doctors when I refused a TB test and amniocenteisis while I was pregnant with my first child. I also refused the eyedrops and vitamin k shot to be administered to my baby upon his birth. I gave the nurse my birth plan only to have a new nurse take over and say they couldn't find it! I got railroaded into a c-section which would not have been necessary had I not been pushed into inducing labor with Pitocin. This was in Los Angeles.

My second child was born in London, England and the experience was completely different. Very respectful of my birth plan and my wishes for a vbac and they were very hands off during the pregnancy. Mid wives handled everything during labor and birth and it could not have been more natural and beautiful.

After tons and tons of research (I love the Dr. Sears Books)and vaccine meetings with families at The Golden Bridge Yoga Center in Hollywood, there just seemed to be too many indicators of ADD, ADHD and Autism related to vaccinations regardless of what the pharmaceutical companies want the public to believe. We decided not to vaccinate either of our children aged 7 and 4 and they are perfectly healthy and happy.

I've had no problem with school requirements either. I just sign a waiver at their respective schools stating that it is against my spiritual and philosophical beliefs to have my children vaccinated.

All the best,
C. L

Most don't offer the vaccine separately. My kids go to Valley Pediatrics and they don't separate either. I have 3 children ( a 7 year old son and 3 1/2 year old boy/girl twins) and my younger son had MANY complications at birth. He was seeing a top developmental pediatrician in Los Angeles and she suggested NOT to eliminate the MMR, but wait until the twins were 2 before getting it, which I did. (My older one got the MMR at the usual age.) I am an educator on the Westside and some of my students have gone to Dr. Jay Gordon, so I am aware that he doesn't like to vaccinate. I personally, am not a believer in that. Be careful NOT vaccinating, since the cons really do outweigh the pros when not getting the proper vaccines. Just as an aside... my brother and sister-in-law had their pediatrician separate my nephew's MMR vaccine and he has autism, so there are no "sure-fire" ways to 100% ensure that the splitting of the MMR will make a difference. So, I suggest waiting until age 2 (which your son is). Good luck!
M.
