Which Name Do You Prefer?

We named our daughter Zelda Joan...and we love both of those names. I'd like to get some opinions on whether we should call her Zelda or Joan...thoughts? (I think I prefer Zelda for an older child/adult but not for a newborn...so we're undecided.) Thanks!

What can I do next?

Z.J. would be falling off my lips in no time flat.

KNOW... whatever you call her now will stick.

If you call her Joan... she'll think of herself as Joan (and will get called Jo, Jo-Jo, Joanie.

If you call her Zelda... she'll think of herself as Zelda. And will get called Zel, Zee, Zelly, ZelZel.

I like ZJ because it can be ZJ / Zelda-Joan and you get BOTH

You don't mention last name.. could be helpful to see what fits best.

Zelda is pretty, you could give her a newborn nickname, Zeely.. or Zella (like Bella) until she gets older.

Good luck

Zelda. There is a video game? I assumed it was after Zelda Fitzgerald - the only other Zelda I have heard of. Pretty name.

Oh, go with Zelda! It's fun, and newborns are fun. You can nickname her 'Zel' (that is one of my nicknames from a few friends), Zelly-Belly... Zelda is memorable and no one else in your playgroup will have a daughter with that name. I am sure by the time she hits preschool or sooner she'll have grown right into it.

Call her Joan. Zelda is the name of a video game.

I always vote for calling them the name you gave them. I have to admit I'm not a fan of intentional nicknames. I firmly believe that your child's spirit guides you to the right name if you're willing to listen.
I love Zelda. So pretty and unique.

Zella, Zee or Zellie as a newborn nickname, and Zelda when she's older?

If it were my daughter, I'd probably call her "Z" as in "Zee" .
I think what you call her NOW will be what she'll get used to and call herself later. (I could be wrong, but noone ever called me anything but Jess or Jessica, so now I'm Jess and Jessica - NEVER been called by my middle name ever)

I would call her by her first name, Zelda. They both sound like older names not for babies at all :) I like the suggestions of the nickname zellie. Super cute!
Congrats!!

I would definitely call her by her first name. If you don't feel that it is right for a baby, come up with a nickname. Zee or Zellie are both cute.

Well...Joan strikes me as no more babyish than Zelda.
Call her Zelda. :)

FWIW...in the womb we called my son Tiny. It was very hard to call him anything but Tiny for the first 6 months. Calling him by his real name was just weird! Even though we had settled on his name the moment we saw his little rocket ship on the ultrasound.
Eventually he grew into his name and it suits him just fine.
Give her a few weeks and she will be a Zelda! :)

Congratulations on your daughter.

When I hear Zelda - I think of the video game...on the same token, it's not a common name so call her Zelda - that's what you named her! I'm sure there are nick names you can get from that - Zell, Zellie, Zee....

My granddaughter's name is McKenna which didn't seem right for a baby. She's now 7 months old and McKenna sounds just right.

Most kids will get a nickname right off. My daughter was given a nickname at daycare at 6 wks old, and that's what most people call her now.

For your baby I would call Baby Z or Joannie

Call her Joan. That is a really nice name, like Joan of Arc. Zelda makes me think of the video game and also the really scary sister in Pet Semetary.

Definitely go with Zelda. Joan, though pretty, is as common as Mary. Use the one that's different. Plus it's her first name. My name is Deanna Michelle and my parents called me S. - has been annoying to explain my whole life and it is a pain to change once you're old enough to try to switch. The first name is first for a reason. And don't worry about the video game association - it will fade away. Zelda is a cool name, embrace it!

I would go with Zelda, or maybe some kind of nickname (I like the ZJ suggestion). It can create confusion when you go by your middle name, rather than your first name.

D.H.

answers from Kansas City on

Please call her Zelda...it is her first name after all.

I was named after my mom so I grew up being called by my middle name. Then she worked at my school and I had to go by my middle name. When I got to Junior High I started going by my first name, which I still go by, and the kids I grew up with were confused. Some found it easy to switch, but others found it hard. I had to explain for years why I was called a different name...even now I have to explain when I tell someone my mom's name. It is a pain.

Zelda is unique and different and very pretty. You gave her the name so embrace it and go with it. Congratulations! Oh, and I didn't know it was a video game name...not everyone will, I suppose. Good luck and God Bless.

If I hadn't of watched Pet Semetary yesterday I would say Zelda, but since I did, I'd go with Joan and call her Joanie!
