Where to Sell Household Furniture and Appliances

Have an estate sale.

Gee whiz! There is no difference in Craig's List and a garage sale. Advertise your yard sale on Craigslist, the city newspaper, at work, at church, with family, with friends, AND post neighborhood signs. That is the best way to do it. Do it for a full weekend starting on Friday at noon and do not go below your set prices until the last hour on Sunday about 3PM. Tell the illegal imigrants who always seem to know enough English to barter you down to $.25 to come back on Sunday and then you will bargain with them. That is how I did it when my father passed and I made $600.

My mom just had to clear out an entire house of stuff, when my aunt moved to assisted living, and here is what we found:

To get the highest dollar amount, you will need to sell the items yourself, either on Craigslist, Ebay or have a family-run estate sale. Obviously, this takes the most work.

If you are OK with letting someone sell the stuff for you, and getting a percentage of the selling price, call an estate sale company. They will do all of the work for you - they will sort, clean, arrange, research, price and sell the items. They will also sell anything that is in the house, from the furniture to the jewelry to the unused cans of food and cleaning products. They hold the sale over a weekend, and generally take a smaller percentage of the sale than a consignment store would. I think it was around 25-30%?

Consignment stores generally take around 50% of the selling price. They also will only take things that are either antique or that are in perfect shape. You may also have to arrange to transport the items to the store yourself, although a lot of stores will have a truck that can pick up your items. You would need to have photos of the items to show to them first, so they can determine if the items are something they can sell. It is also not a quick way to sell, since the item will go into the store and may not sell for a while (or at all). Consignment stores seem to be a good choice when you have a few really nice pieces of furniture to sell.

For furniture, we have had very good experiences with Furniture Buy Consign in Lewisville. I think they also sale rugs, paintings, and other types of home decor as well.
