Where to Rent in the Lake District in England?

Can anyone suggest an area in the Lake District to rent a cottage for a week? We'll be flying in from Amsterdam and would like something rural, but populated enough where there will be at least one or 2 pubs to walk to for dinner. What I had in mind was finding a place to relax, be lazy, enjoy the view, read, have tea in the afternoons and grab a bite to eat for dinner somewhere. We aren't planning on doing any sightseeing. We'll be heading to London the week after that and our schedule will be packed with sightseeing at that time. But, we will have transportation so if we want to drive around in the country, we'll be able to do that.

The Lake District is just SO big its making it hard to decide on an area.

What can I do next?

Thanks you guys. Yes, I know I could talk to a travel agent but the first thing they ask is what area am I interested in...that's like asking what city in the U.S. to visit. Alot of them seem stuck on the fact that we want to do alot of sightseeing and we actually don't...not in the LD.

Decisions decisions...

Hope you have fun!!! I never lived in England, only visited there.

I know we have several moms on here from the U.K. I will ask my friends who lived in England what they would recommend.

Have you tried a travel agent? Some are REALLY good with international rentals...make a list of questions - and what you are looking for - just like you did for us and start asking questions!!!

Avoid Windermere and Ambleside, Wonderful but heaving in season which puts huge pressure on pubs and restaurants - tables fully booked and service consequently slow.

Smaller village of Grasmere might be a good compromise. Otherwise go rural and be prepared to drive to a rural pub where you have a better chance of parking and securing table. Downside is the drink/driving situation. Go carefully! Driver should drink modestly perhaps one alcoholic drink only or not at all. Take abstinence in turns? The law and penalties there are more serious than in many States. An offence could ruin your holiday which I really hope you will enjoy. It's a wonderful region for scenery, driving or walking. It does rain a lot but Brits don't worry about that, they simply take shelter in a pub! Best wishes.
