Where to Go on Cape Cod?

My husband and I are driving to Cape Cod (Chatham) with our two- and four-year-old daughters in a couple of weeks. Our resort (Wequassett) looks like it has plenty of kid-friendly activities, but we also want to explore the area and would like to eat as many meals as possible off-property. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Any of the beaches are just gorgeous! There is also a really cute zoo/aquarium (I really can't remember which) on the island. Nothing too fancy or crazy, but definitely something fun to do. I also suggest doing Martha's Vineyard...always beautiful!

Our favorite restaurant is called the Riverway Lobster House in S. Yarmouth. We seriously ate there 3 times the last time we were there, and while all of the restaurants claim to have the best chowder, we found theirs to be our favorite!

I hope this helps and have fun! :)

We absolutely love The Cape and go every fall (for the past 10 years).
Check out kidsonthecape.com for some ideas.

The beach will keep the kids occupied for hours, the National Sea Shore in Eastham has very large waves, a beautiful beach, but not great for the little ones. Note: expect to pay $10 to $20 for parking at most of the beaches.

If bike riding is your thing, be sure to bring the bikes along as there are tons of great trails all throughout the cape.

In Sandwich (when you first get onto the cape), can't remember the name, but theres a small museum type place, very kid friendly, that tells about the building of the canal and has some hands on exhibits. It's about a 1/2 hour stop.

There's a nice trail that runs along the side of the canal. We usually stop there to take a nice walk and stretch our legs.

If you take a drive into Hyannis, visit the Kennedy Memorial. Next to the memorial is a nice little park, with a picnic area, playground, and small beach. If you continue on down the road, there's a larger beach that's also nice.

In Yarmouth is the Zooaquarium. We went there years ago and were very disappointed. Of course, things could have changed so you may want to check out recent reviews.

As for eating, we're really big on picnics, so the cooler is always with us. We all love The Brazilian Grill in Hyansis, but it doesn't cater to younger kids. Ok, not healthy but we're on vacation, we love to pick up KFC and take it down to the beach. There's also the Hearth and Kettle, which is very family friendly and has several locations. For fried seafood (the have hot dogs for the kids) the Kream and Cone on Route 28 (I think it's in Dennis) is great.

Have a great vacation!

I grew up on the Cape. I'd suggest that you try Seafood Sam's which has locations in Sandwich and Yarmouth (also Falmouth but that would be pretty far from Chatham). Also someone mentioned the Brazilian Grill - it's AWESOME and a MUST try. I've been to MANY Brazilian restaurants in the Boston area and elsewhere - NONE has compared to the one in Hyannis so far. I would disagree that it's not kid friendly. I have no trouble with my two year old eating there. He'll eat things like beans, rice, fish, chicken.

Also you might check out Dick and Ellie's flea market in Dennis. You'd have to Google it to see what the hours are, last time I went it was $1 to get in, free for kids.

Just a warning about the beaches out there - the water has a tendency to be VERY COLD, so I'd stick with the pool at your resort or maybe travel to one of the beaches in Hyannis (like Craigville Beach). Also most Cape beaches have a tendency to get crowded very quickly so if you're planning on spending a day at the beach, get there EARLY. Otherwise you'll end up either not getting on or walking far to get there. My absolute favorite beach on the Cape is Old Silver in North Falmouth (which is kind of far for you, but definitely worth the drive if you decide to check it out).

I'm sorry, I don't remember the names of the places we ate at while there but one thing we did that we had fun doing with the kids was whale watching. I suggest doing that.
