Hi Mamas,

I'm a first time mom and starting to look at all of the necessities I'll need to get for the baby, however I'm not sure where to go to find the best expert reviews. When you researched which car seat, crib, bottles, etc. to be buying where did you do your homework to make sure it was trusted advice?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Here is a website for Car Seat Reviews.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/Ease-of-Use

Scroll down to the bottom and select the type of seat you are looking for.

For Cribs I would only buy a Non-Drop side crib, they are being outlawed. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a good one either.

Bottles, look for something that is BPA free and other than that it is up to your baby as far as what they like.

My FIL sells in the industry (he reps for Safety First, Eddie Bauer, Cosco and Maxi Cosi) and relies heavily on Consumer Reports for 3rd party info.

In general, he said as long as something is JPMA certified, you're in good shape in terms of safety.

The book Baby Bargains is a great resource and will include everything under the sun.

I second (or third) Consumer Reports. It's the only non-profit consumer lobbying agency too, so spending the $15 or whatever the yearly cost is, benefits a great cause.

I highly recommend the Baby Bargains book. When I was pregnant with my son, I had no clue what to look for and this book helped tremendously. Don't let the "bargains" word in the name distract you, it's not focused on bargain shopping, but has general advice and product reviews. Get the latest one though, otherwise the information may be out-of-date.

call a local fire department or la leche league.... some fire and police departments do car seat trainings, so as such they will have good information for you.
some can even get free car seats, so ask them about that too.
