Our asthma specialist recommended that we buy a stethescope to listen to our son's lungs. There are so many offerings online that I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good product. Thanks!

Hi A.,
I am in the healthcare field and own a Littman stethoscope which is the best one around. The one I have is a Classic II which is for infants on up to geriatrics, but it is a bit bulky. Some of the nurses have the lite one which is not only light weight but pretty. Go to www.allheart.com and search for Littman stethoscopes. Hope this helps.
I too have asthmatic children and know what you are going through, it is definitely not fun but it does get easier as they get older.
Hugs,
T.

Hi A.,
I'm a nurse, and I have an ultrascope.. I love it.. they have many different designs you can choose from so it might be a little more fun for your son. I bought mine when I graduated nursing school 10 years ago and it has lasted all this time. At that time I worked in open heart so it got used alot! One time the ear part cracked and they sent me all new tubing. I was going to buy a litmann (that's the one most nurses use) but a co-worker had one of these and the quality was just as good as the litmann cardiology and it was a little less money.
Good luck!

Get a stethoscope that is 2 sided. It should have a larger "head" and a smaller "head". The smaller one is for listening to children and infants. It is more sensitive and works better on tiny chests. The larger side is for bigger kids and adults. I bought mine years ago for about $20 so price is not a real issue. I am no help as to where but I know if you have a uniform supply shop in your area they useally sell stethoscopes too if they care Police, Fire and EMS uniforms and assessories.

Just a note too: that once you buy a stethoscope take it with you to your next doctor appointment and have them show you how to use it and what normal or adnormal sounds like. A.

I don't have a advice about where, but I recommend getting a Littmann stethoscope. They are the best -- they hold up well and the brand used by most doctors and nurses. The more expensive, the better, but you don't need a really pricey one just to listen to breath sounds.

I'm sure you can do a price comparison online (Amazon is a good place to look) -- just keep your eye out for Littmanns.

hi A.. i am a nurse. you can try allheart.com. Littman brand stethescopes are the best. They are pricey but worth it. Ask your asthma specialist if he/she wants you to but a pediatric size or an adult size. if allheart.com is not he correct website, google littman stethescopes. good luck and hope your little boy stays well! :)

Hi A.,

I am a nurse, Littman is a quality brand stethoscope. There are many models. I use the Littman Classic II SE. I am very happy with it and I feel it would be sufficient for listening to a childs lung sounds. Most of the other nurses and the doctors at the hospital also use a Littman brand stethoscope. You can also purchase a stethoscope in a nurses or general uniform store such as Working Gear.

If you need to familiarize yourself with the different lung sounds, you can find free audio tutorials on the internet, just type in lung sounds.
