My 4 yo is really getting into Legos, and I A. learning how expensive they are. There are none for sale on Craigslist, and very few on ebay that are better deals than what they have in the stores. My question is, where do all the Legos go when older kids are done playing with them? I'm talking sets--not a bucket of bricks. Do kids take these things to college or something? Legos have been out for years, yet there's no used ones out there. It's just weird! Do they all go into the landfill? Because if that's the case, then I don't want to buy them. It's just really, really odd...
I got a suggestion to join the Lego Club from another Mamapedia mom. Great suggestion! It's totally free. Also Target has a sale this week on a few Lego items. Thanks everyone, for your advice and for making me laugh at some of the responses!

They end up on the floor. Mom steps on them in the middle of the night. Cusses in the dark. Then throws it away. Or dad cleans the kids rooms and anything left on the floor gets swept up and sent to file 13. At least thats how it happens in my house.

I don't think anyone actually outgrows legos they just slowly disappear. One day you realize you have a bin with nothing in it.

My parents saved all the little instruction booklets and put all the legos (yes, ALL of them) into this HUUUUGE rubbermade bin... I could fit all 3 of my kids AND my dog in that bin if I wanted to.
My brother doesn't have kids yet, but we're both fighting like hell over who gets all those legos!! I WANT THEM!

I have been wondering the same thing! Apparently they never go on sale either! My son is obsessed with Duplo ones. My mom still has the ones we played with when we were little -- like 30 years ago! I think they just last forever and people either save them or pass them along. You can post an "item wanted" on Craigslist or Freecycle and see if anyone responds.

I think Lego Land has some sort of pull on them and they can travel through space (maybe time I'm not sure)...
If you find them don't send ours back, because if they're not gone I will step on them and say a curse word and have to put money in the jar!
Damn Legos!

Our sons graduated from High School in 89, 90 and 94. We still have their Lego's. We have a 10 yr old grandson who lives 3-4 hours away, loves them and have purchased new sets for him. We have twin grandsons that are almost 4 and also a 6 yr old grandson about 1/2 hr away and it is time to dig all of ours out of storage because we don't have to worry about the little guys putting them in their mouths any more. At the price they are it's best to keep them for eternity. They never grow old.

My mom and MIL saved ours for our children. They keep them at their homes and now the next generation LOVES them! They love the Legos and the Lincoln Logs.
Lots of times the sets have missing pieces, so they get sold at garage sales or tossed out. Check out yard sales- we've found some great ones there!

People hang on to them to pass down to their kids when they have kids. That's what my parents did with my brother's Legos.
Our son just outgrew Legos and I know we'll keep some for his future kids. The rest I expect we'll sell in big bins at a garage sale.

If you subscribe to the Toys R Us newsletters, you might get offers. I recall a recent really big sale for them. They are expensive for sure. Toys R Us also does lego building events, I've noticed, so that might be a fun way to try stuff out before you buy it.

The sets rarely get sold because who the heck holds onto all of those pieces and keeps them separate from the other pieces so that they can be sold as a set? Ours are all mixed up in giant plastic bins - one is an under bed storage box, others are big totes. One of my co-workers salivates over the Star Wars mini figs and can't believe that I don't treasure each and every one of them.
My 13-year-olds still play with the bricks and my youngest is 5 so I have many, many, many more years of having these underfoot.

My son loves them and he plays with them all the time... I been thinking about keeping them for the next generations ;0).. and for what I read a lot of mamas (will) do the same.
I have also known about HS/college kids that use them for some projects, so really it is a "forever toy"
I have bought them after X-Mas (even 2+ of the same) and hid them for bdays and next x-mas... they never go "out of style" and is good for boys & girls...

There are used ones out there- but not a ton. I think it is because people use them for a long time -age 4 to 14 and then save them for future generations. My mom still has the huge suitcase of legos at her house for when the grandkids are over.

My son's Legos are one of the few things I A. saving for my grandchildren (lol, a long ways off I hope!) They are no longer divided into separate sets, they are all mixed up in one of those large but shallow Rubbermaid containers, the kind that slide under the bed.
They were a big investment and I consider them to be heirloom type toys.
I A. also holding onto the Playmobils, Brio trains and a collection of vintage Fisher Price Little People that I bought on ebay.
I don't think anyone ever throws away Legos, they are too valuable! I'm sure they just usually get passed on to younger cousins or friends, or donated to schools and daycare centers.

I often find Duplo legos at Goodwill. In fact, most of my son's collection came from there. Now we are on to the teeny tiny, find them all over the house legos. I have actually found many people selling those at yard sales. Legos are a toy that grow with the kid. I think it takes many years for a kid to completely outgrow legos, which makes them harder to find.

My MIL saved all my husband's Legos and handed them down to our two boys. I'm guessing I'll do the same, but I'll certainly need to pare the stash down. We have TOO many Legos. :)

Like others have said they get passed down. My 50 yo brother still plays with legos everytime he goes to our parents house. One thing I do instead of trying to keep sets separate I just keep the instruction book that came with it and if the kids want to build it again they have the instructions and can dig through the bin to get all of the pieces they need to do so. Oh and the off brands are not as good so it is worth the money to buy the real thing.

My brother finally gave my son his legos and he is now 41. Not kidding. He wasn't ready to part with them until now. They were too precious. Ours will be with us for a very long time too, although I'm hoping my son doesn't cart them around until his middle aged too!

They are all at my house. I bought a big box at a garage sale for my daughter when she was about six years old. They were fairly cheap. I then saved them and so did she. Her stepson used them, her son used them, I went to Denmark to work and added to the collection. After all earning Euros is a bonus and so they weren't cheap but not as expensive as here. At Legoland I went to the Brick Room and bought odd colors and sizes by the gram. Five years later I took my grandson to work with me with a side trip to Legoland. He used all his spending money to add to his collection. By now there were two big collections one at my house and one at his.
My other daughter had a son. Last summer when he was here all he did was play with his collection and the many pieces friends of mine had given me for him. He went home with his and many pieces from the family set.
Legos are family heirlooms. People save them. My younger daughter is for certain to saving their set for her grandchildren whenever she has some.

The sets never stay together as sets. Yes they may put together the thing the box says once or twice, but then they are mixed up. And that is the great thing about legos. They can use their imaginations and build whatever they want. My kids liked the ones with the people in them. Anything with the most in them. I have a storage container of legos. I will probably save them until I have grandkids. They are expensive if you buy the big sets, but you can buy the smaller ones. Build the pile of legos a little at a time.

No one gets rid of them, they are handed down to younger siblings, relatives, etc. We have millions of them - and they are always breaking down the sets they bought, rebuilding into something else, and the sets no longer are sets in the end, just a pile of legos. I think legos are timeless, not some fad toy, and help kids use their brain and be creative - and the cost being on the higher end, no one parts with them !!!
