I started using the Lansinoh brand of lanolin cream about a month before I gave birth, and it didn't help "prepare" me at all. Once my son arrived, I couldn't live without the stuff! I'd say wait until you start breastfeeding at the hospital, and they can give you some free samples while you are there. If you like it and want to keep using it, you can get it at most drug stores after you run out of the samples.

I also nursed... You really do not need to invest in this. IF you think you want to do this... You can use a good-quality olive oil from your kitchen - it is perfectly safe for your infant and has less ingredients that will later be taken in by your new baby. It also works great for a skin cleaner, softener ~ Olive oil has many, many uses besides cooking. :)

And it works better than any Lanolin-base product. (lanolin is a sheep-based oil.)

Lanolin topicals can be found anywhere, target, walmart, walgreens, etc. If you interested in other alternativs, Melaleuca products are completely safe for you and your baby, made without chemicals and harsh products. Just let me know if you want more info.

La leche league and the latest studies show that in fact cream is not necessary. Your own breast milk and air is the best treatment for sore or cracked nipples. If it is extremely painful you can use shields that prevent contact of your bra or shirt until it heals.

I do not know where to find it but I would caution you that many of them contain lanolin. If you are allergic to wool please be careful. My doctor did not mention it and I wound up with a terrible rash covering my entire chest area. Good luck.

I wouldn't worry about the cream until after you begin nursing...you may not need it at all. When I was pregant, a friend (fellow mamma) suggested to me to use my "scrubbie" (get it at target or bath and body works) on my nipples while in the shower, for just a couple minutes each side....I started this around my 7th or 8th month...and it seemed to work. I had no issues/pain associated with nursing. Not sure if that is what did the trick or what, but it can't hurt to try. Congrats on your baby that will soon be here!

Lansinoh - Lanolin Breast Cream can usually be found at target or walmart. you can also order it online. they gave me some at the hospital when i first had my son so perhaps they might sell it at the medical supply store as well. it is usually in the baby section of stores near the breast pumps.

I say, don't buy it. I received a tube for a baby shower gift and only used it 3-4 times. You're better off trying to get a few "free samples" (online, from the hospital, or at a baby-supply store) and see if you even need it before you shell out the $$ for a tube! Also, the suggestion about olive oil is right on! My grandmother and mom told me the same thing and it works! Anyways, you might not even have any problems and need any kind of cream/oil.

Good luck!
