Where Can I Get Boxes for Moving

J., Where are you located? I have a ton of free great boxes. At my place of employment we get shipments in daily & we recycle all of them.

try albanese candy store. I used to work at a candy store in Illinois and we used to save boxes for people all the time. at most you might have to buy box tape to tape them up but they are great and strong.

I would try craigslist.org. Look under the tab that says free stuff. I haven't done it personally but I look at craigslist all the time and I always see postings of free moving boxes if you are willing to go get them. Good luck!

If you take the paper keep an eye on the give away section sometimes people give away moving boxes that they used when they moved.

Check with a copy place like Office Depot, Staples, etc. I do not know what they do with the boxes that they get there copy paper out of.
You can also check with your local grocery store and ask them if they will save boxes for you.

when my mom moved, she went to jewel and got some boxes. she used the ones that they had received the large gallons of water in. they worked well for her. also, if you know someone who works in an office, the boxes that copy paper comes in are nice size boxes too

Look in your local newspaper under the classified. People are always trying to get rid of moving boxes in good condition for cheep!!

You can buy new moving boxes from a moving company which will then let you get a refund or money back when you return them to the company. You can buy whatever sizes you want, including wardrobe etc.. or ask at the grocery store, book stores etc. when their stock comes in and they are happy to give them to you and you can pick and choose what sizes you want and don't have to hassle to return them. Ask your friends if they will save any boxes they get from shipments of stuff. sometimes if they're smaller they are more versatile and lighter to move. I just recycled a bunch of boxes from shipments of things I'd gotten. Good luck with your move.

Try the local liquor store. Their boxes are the perfect size for kitchen & bathroom stuff. Plus they are extra sturdy since they were used to ship liquor bottles.

We've always had luck going to Jewel and Dominick's for boxes. Make sure to go in the evening b.c it seems that's when you'll have the best luck. I'd suggest getting egg boxes and paper goods boxes (no food boxes).

If you do the grocery store, ask for the boxes the gallons of water come in. Also, book store and Starbucks believe it or not. Great for books, cds, dvds, dishes, anything heavy. hth

I was recently moving myself and my husband and I went to Costco and purchased boxes from there. They have boxed sets that come with small, medium and large boxes and also with bubble wrap and packing tape and a marker they cost about 50.00 each set but it was well worth it.

Ditto to U-Haul. They have bubble wrap, and every size of box imaginable-lamp boxes, picture boxes and other odd sizes. It is so easy and you don't have to go all over town with your little one looking in dumpsters for old boxes. I know I am probably paranoid about this, but cockroaches love cardboard and can be found in the cardboard boxes at grocery stores. Sorry to say that, but it's true.

The best boxes for moving are EGG boxes that you can get at your local supermarket. They are super sturdy, the right size and have handles on the side so they are easy to carry. Everytime I've had to move I hit up my local grocery stores and the are more then happy to give them to you because all they would do is throw them out.

Truly they are the best boxes for moving and the best part is that they are FREE!!

I always see people on craigslist selling their used boxes for cheap... I often find them in the free section too.

I don't know for sure how this wold work, but my father drives for Dominick's & a lot of times he has to pick up cardboard boxes for recycling that they put in a bailer & tie up w/ string. You may want to try calling Dominick's to see if they would let you use the boxes they would ordinarily just send to be recycled anyway. Good luck!

I have some boxes from my small business that you could have if you are in the Bloomington area. I also have found that people on your local freecycle may have boxes to get rid of.

J., you can get empty boxes if you call Jewel, Dominicks, Whole Foods, your local 7-11 and ask them when they usually have them and pick them up. Or you can pay for boxes at any U-Haul location.

The public library is a great place to get really strong boxes. They are constantly receiving new shipments of books, hence the good quality of the boxes! Just ask at the front desk and see if they can hook you up with whoever receives the book shipments.

Try Home Depot or Lowes or somewhere like that. Let someone know you are looking for boxes and they may even save some for you. Also, when we moved, I got tons from liquor stores. They aren't big boxes, but the are sturdy. And, sometimes they have dividers still in them which are great for packing up your dishes or other breakable items. Good luck

When we moved a few years ago I got a lot of boxes from the store REI - I figured they're an earthy business and wouldn't mind recycling. Just don't ever get boxes from a grocery store, other boxes that hold food, or boxes from an alley or a dumpster. They can have roach eggs in them and that is definitely something you don't want to move into your new home with you!

I get mine from a storage space. People have to break down and throw their boxes away so I just get mine from the dumpster. There are mostly boxes and not much trash.

Try grocery stores, call first to find out when they have new merchandise in - the boxes usually are very durable. You might even be able to maneuver a couple crates for heavy things like books.

Most of your grocery stores will hold boxes for you. Just call them and ask them to hold them for you on delivery day, then arrange a time with them when they are done unpacking the boxes so you can pick them up.

I can always find free boxes in various sizes at Menards or Home Depot. They seem to always be unloading shipments during the day and will let you take them off their hands.

I don't know what realtor you might be using or what stage in the process you are at but, we also are moving and as our gift to us our realtor purchased boxes for us - about 140 of them. We are using Coldwell Banker. I'm not sure if this is a standard thing to do, but it is very helpful!!! Otherwise, I'm not sure where you can get boxes from.....Good Luck!

I used to manage office buildings and can tell you that tenants ALWAYS have extra boxes laying around that they are trying to get rid of. If you or your husband work in an office building, I would recommend you talk to the management office. Since buildings have to pay to have their recyclables hauled away (they do get a rebate, but it often does not exceed the cost), the less they have to throw away themselves, the better. They are usually happy to give away boxes for free. It takes garbage out of their waste stream and reduces the cost they have to pay to get rid of it.

My neighbor just moved from IL to Oklahoma and she got many boxes from our local Jewel-Osco Grocery store. She had to call them, but they set them out the night before and she went to pick them up in the morning hours.
I would suggest any grocery store that your close to!

Usually you can get them at storage facilities for a fee. I live in Downers Grove and usually have boxes from deliveries which I am happy to give away. I just gave away lots last weekend, but if you are close by I can save any new ones for you. The boxes are sturdy, and I usually have different sizes.

you can call grocery stores and find out when they restock shelves. sometimes they will hold them for you if you ask...other times you have to go get them at the time of the restock. Get the boxes that are for toilet paper, kleenex and paper towel..that way you know they won't have bug issues. We are moving too and got most of our boxes there.

You can buy them at the U-Hall.

Have you ever tried freecycle? It is a website where people in your area post offers of unwanted items and people post items they want. It is all free-to keep things out of landfills and as a way for people to save money. If you go to www.freecycle.org- you put in your city and state and it will find your local group. I see people posting offers and requests for moving boxes all the time. Good luck with the move!

Your best bet would be to try smaller, privately owned stores that have better customer service! I used to work at a small grocery store and we would always save boxes for people or my husband works for a plumbing supply warehouse and they have tons of extra boxes that the owners would much rather give away than pay to put in the garbage! Call around to local nursing homes. I work in one and we always have a ton of boxes to get rid off after the supplies show up. If they don't have any when you call just ask when their next delivery day should be, they usually have one a week.

Just drive around to the back of stores and check dumpsters. They are usually broken down but clean and together.

Jewel food store or your work or ANY grocery store. Call first and theyll tell u when shipment will b due.

The egg boxes from the grocery store worked the best for us. They are a good size, so they do not get too heavy and have handle holes for carrying. We just went every day or every other day and picked up any that they had.

If you have a Trader Joe's close to you, they give away their boxes from cases of wine. (Mine were just stocked at the front of the store and I didn't even have to ask for them.) They are great for moving glasses because each glass has its own compartment.

Hi - I don't know where you are located or when you need them, but we are moving June 16, 17 & 18 and I will have a ton of empty boxes by the end of that week. We have boxes from our movers and it's all sizes. Let me know if you are interested. I will be in Aurora near Eola/North Aurora.

Depends on where you live. You might try any store nearby, such as Jewel or Dominicks. Also, you can try liquor stores such as Binnys or Gold Standard. It's the same with them, though. You'd have to go on the day the boxes are available. No one has time nor space to save. Sometimes schools will save xerox paper boxes. Those are the best. Do you have or know someone who works in an office? Try the local library. They might even know where you can get them in your area. Also, do you have a township or community center nearby? They might have suggestions or be able to help. Good luck.

I 2nd the egg cartons. They are decent for storage as well.

Try Borders or Barnes and Noble bookstores. I work at a Borders bookstore and we give boxes away all the time.

We just moved and I got boxes from Jewel, the water and egg boxes are the best.

I also got some from another grocery store (certified store).

The bulk of our boxes I purchased from our moving company.

I work in a printing company and save paper boxes for people all the time. And even saved some for me when I moved. Great for storing too. Try finding one close to where you live. Also save your diaper boxes too. I find them handy for "toy boxes" as well. Makes for easier rotating of toys! Happy moving.

When we moved we asked a lot of companies and most of them got rid of their boxes. However, we were able to get some from Kinkos. We just had to be there the night after their delivery to pick up their empty boxes. This was about 4 years ago...they may have changed their policies! Good luck!

I hear that in back of grocery stores they sometimes have boxes and crates.
You can buy them at a U-Haul or Mailboxes, Etc. store, which also sell packing tape, labels, bubble wrap. I found a lot of good supplies at the U-Haul store, including a packing gun. Lowe's and/or Menard's also have packing and moving supplies.

Check also with neighbors/friends who have recently moved, or a local school where people may have donated their unused boxes (that's where I got a bunch for free, from my kids' school.) Also, if you are using a moving company, they will supply you with a lot of boxes (we are getting up to 60 boxes from our moving company) as part of the contract.

The Merchandise Mart (floors 13, 14 & 15) get regular shipments of product. They put the empty boxes in the hall or near the service elevators.

I know this isn't their intended use but if you don't want to have to buy boxes from someone like UHaul, you can get different sized boxes free from USPS and ebay. You just have to be logged into your ebay account and they ship whatever size you need free. I've still got a ton of them leftover.

you can try signing up for freecycle in your area--you can post things that you want, or post things that you want to get rid of, and it's all free. freecycle.org you can sign up for your town, and surrounding towns. someone might see your post and happen to have moving boxes in their garage that they haven't figured out what to do with yet. there you go! it's fun too!

Go to Taco bell. They have a recycling dumpster for theirs, and they may flatten them but with some packing tape they work fine. That's what I do cause my hubby works at taco bell and can get all the boxes we need. :-)

I think all the local storage places have boxes for sale. I got some there, and the rest I picked up at Dominick's or Jewel. They can tell you when they restock, and that's the best time to go. You can pick them up right in the aisles then. If you don't get there fast enough, they break them down and crush them in the back.

Call you r local grocery store, ie Jewel or Dominicks, and ask them when they have boxes available ( I have found first thing in AM) Tell them to hold them for you.

Call your grocer and find out when their shipments arrive, and be ready to get there ASAP. Here are the best boxes to use for moving: the boxes Eggs are shipped in!! They are amazingly solid (although they do have holes in the top and the bottom (easily remedied by cutting up another box and placing it inside), but for a move of fragile things that won't slip out... they are amazing! We did an entire move from our 3000' home using those almost exclusively, and NOTHING broke!

You can also purchase boxes (new) from any moving store (like UHaul or similar brands!)

Borders has great size boxes for moving. They get shipments on Tuesday and Thursday. Just call and they will set some aside for you to pick up those evenings. They are not too big that you can over pack them and make them too heavy.

Moving sucks bad enough with out having to look for boxes, I got lazy last time and went to Sam's Club. I bought boxes and a tape gun. It was nice to not have the headache and know when I ran out of boxes I could just go get more! I think I spent almost $70 on boxes and had lots left over. I later gave them all to my brother when he moved.
