So my 2 1/2 yo has been out of diapers for a little over a month but we have kept her in the night time pullups just in case she has only peed in them a couple of times and only in the morning if she doesn't make it to the potty on time usually because I am in the shower or using the toilet myself. and that hasn't even happened for a couple of weeks now so I feel like i am just generating a lot of trash for no reason and spending money on some thing I don't really need but I am not comfortable just taking chances cause she often times will climb into bed with me so my question is does any one have any ideas on alternatives to pull ups and when do you think that it might be a good idea to give them up for good. oh yeah she will wakeup if she needs to go potty so we haven't really had a prob. any advice would be appreciated thanks

So What Happened?

thank you every one I think that we will try stopping the pull ups (she doesn't use them for naps either) but I was just wondering if anyone knows if they makes mattress pads for adult size beds since she sleeps in our bed about 40% of the time an usually in the morning when she is most likely to pee. I don't mind washing sheets its just that I can't really wash my mattress so if anyone knows were I could find something like this let me know thanks

If the pull ups are dry in the morning....why not re-use them??? I did the same thing with my son when we were going through the final stages of potty training....If they are clean the why not re-use it??

Each kid is different. Our oldest used them for about two weeks at night. Next our daughter used them for almost 2 years. Our third was a few months and our youngest girl was actually never. Since the day she decided she was done with diapers at a week after her 2nd b-day she never wet again. Our rule was 2-4 weeks with out accidents. with our oldest girl they got so expencive that we switched her back to diapers. We would unfold them and pre-ajust the tabs so she could step into them like pull ups and she didn't seem to know the differece. If you ar enot comfortable with going without than maybe this is a good alternative for you. Good Luck! - Yevtte

I re-use my son's diapers if they are not wet. :) My son is 2 1/2 as well. He still wears diapers at night time because sometimes he is a heavy sleeper. He is waking up dry more often now though. I actually use the traditional huggies with him because sometimes it's easier to get them on after they fall asleep. They do sell waterproof mattress pads. I know for sure at Wal-mart, etc. The only problem I ran into with them is that they are made of plastic and they can make you hot and sticky. I couldn't stand sleeping on it!! Maybe they came out with something better. What you could do is...they sell just the flat mattress protectors...which you would just slip under your daughter...this might avoid you getting so hot. :) They are probably about $10.00. Well worth it if you don't have to try and clean your mattress! I'm with you girl! :) Good luck.

Hi there. Congrats on the potty training :) My daughter has just been potty trained as well. She was dry every night and I thought it a waste to use the pull ups since she wasnt going pee at night so I got a mattress pad to put on the bed under her sheet and have had her in panties at night ever since. She has had one accident and it was so easy to clean up. I just pulled off the sheet and the pad, put them in the washer and the mattress was completely dry. (they also have disposable pads) I would go look for some of these, especially since your daughter knows how to wake up at night to go. She seems ready to be rid of those annoying pullups once and for all :)

My son and I have been potty training for a week we have had a few accidents but I took his pull ups away about three weeks ago and put him back in diapers. Then when he wanted to wear big boy underwear that was it. I didn't do the night time thing and he knows to go potty we have only had one night accident and that was the first night. It will be harder for you then her to take them away. I don't like them cause they are so expensive.

I hate to say this but, it sound like you are having her wear the pull-ups for yuor convience and not hers. It sounds to me like she is more than ready to be done with them. My daughter was 1 1/2 when she was done with diapers but I kept putting pull-ups on her at night. One night her grandma forgot to put one on her and she did fine. She even got up and went by herself to the bathroom. I was the one keeping her from being a big girl. If your daughter doing things herself then take the chance and don't put them on anymore. I bet you will be surprised on how great she will feel. I know YOU can do it. It was hard for me to let go too. Best of luck.

We used pull ups for a couple of months for the reasons that you mentioned. My granddaughter was having accidents perhaps once a week. We took her out of them earlier but the accidents continued. She did wear the same pull up for several nights which cut down on the cost and the trash. The diaper idea sounds good to me too.

I have been actively potty training both my 3 1/2 year old daughter, Sequoyah, and my 2 year old son, Jessan for the past 2 months. We decided right from the start to not purchase diapers or pull-ups for day or night use, period. True I do have to pack extra clothes when we leave home, and I do have more laundry, but we didn't want to take a chance on confusing either child. It has worked well for us. The kids are both day and night trained now, with only a couple accidents per week. And most of those are during the day when it's nice and the kids are outside playing. Especially since your daughter makes it thru most nights and does well, I would say give up the extra expense, just remember that means giving up the extra security. My children also climb into bed with us during the night, I've learned to wake myself up enough to check for dampness before cuddling up to them. Saves having to wash my sheets as well as theirs, when they've had an accident. Good Luck and God Bless.

as soon as my daughter made it a month with little to no pees in her pull ups I stopped using them. We also had a no drinks after 6 o clock rule. She has only had maybe 5 accidents in 3 years.

You should just be thankful she gets up to go potty!! My 4 year old is still in a night time pullup since she sleeps to hard. I think if she's big enough to get up in the middle of the night, she might be ready to just switch to underwear at night. Just lay out an extra pair of underwear and jammies along with sheets and blankets at night in case she does have an accident. I tried this with my daughter, but because she sleeps so hard, I ended up changing sheets and clothes more than I got sleep!!! I hope this helps a bit!!!

Hi T.-
My son stayed dry at night for an entire month so I decided to let him sleep in underwear. This required weaning him from his nighttime cup that he loved taking to bed. But that was easy. I just told him if he wanted to stay dry, he couldn't have his cup. I made him a sticker chart for the month and every morning that he wakes up dry, he gets a sticker. When he fills the chart up, he gets a little prize. I made sure that I put a waterproof mattress cover on his bed just in case. I also made sure that I woke him up in the morning to go potty. I did this at the same time every day. After about a week, he was waking up on his own, going potty and going back to bed. I hope that helps!
