When to Give First Hair Cut?

I have a soon to be 20 month old girl. She has never had a haircut. Her dad says if you cut it, it will grow longer and thicker. Her Dr. says it doesn't matter. I think her hair is good, it's to the bottom of her shoulders when wet, not real thick yet. Her hair is curly and I don't want her to lose the curl. I have never cut her bangs, I don't want her to have bangs. Have any of you noticed a difference after you've cut your kids hair? When is a good age for the first haircut?

What can I do next?

I am a cosmetologist and I would say it is good to give them a little trim every once in a while even if you don't want it cut that much. It just keeps the hair healthier.

My daughter was 19 months old the first time I cut her hair. She had the most adorable curls, and I mourned the loss of them. The stylist had to cut off more than I envisioned to get it all evened up. Her hair was so short, many confused her for a boy, even in dresses! That was in November.

Now her hair is thicker (or maybe it appears so because the ends are healthier) and slowly getting longer. It is finally at the point I can start putting little ponies and bows in her hair. And guess what? The curls are coming back! My blog has recent pics of her, www.lmw0974.blogspot.com and if you archive to November you will find the post about her haircut with pics.

No offense to your husband, but the whole "cut your hair so it can grow faster, longer, thicker, etc..." is just plain false. If you think about it scientifically (or even just logically) you'll realize that the part that gets cut is the ends, right? The ends or even a few inches from the ends is the dead part of the hair. Cutting that off has absolutely no effect on the living part of the hair to even influence it (if that were possible) to grow one way or another. The only way you may make a difference in how fast, thick or long it grows (and it may or may not work anyway) is if you repetitively shave her bald! (because that's the closest to the roots - the living part of the hair - that you can get) I'm assuming you don't want to do that, right? Only cut it if it bugs you. If there's an uneven part, or something that you want to trim. Like the other poster said, trimming once in a while anyway is going to keep the ends of her hair healthier (less split ends, more even appearance, etc.). So... bottom line: You don't "need" to cut her hair until there's a cosmetic reason. Until you don't like the way it looks, or it's in her face too much, or whatever. My daughter's first haircut was just to trim the "mullet" off the back of her head. It was around 14 months. If her hair were more even, I wouldn't have done it. Good luck! Make sure to save a lock!

I do hair, i think you should trim her hair a little bit. just the ends it will look better and be easier to brush and comb. A haircut cannot make hair grow longer or thicker. It will make it less likely to break which makes it seem to grow faster if breakage is a problem. Also it makes it look thicker because it even across the bottom and not straggly. But if they cut to much it might cut off all the curl. definately say just a trim you like the curl. Good luck!!!!!

Yes, I've noticed a difference when I've cut my children's hair. The difference: it's shorter, the texture may change, and the one's who had curls lost it.

That's the change MY children had with cuts...

Do what you want. You know, we have an agreement; I'm in control of the girls' hair and HE is in control of the boys' hair. It's just best that way...for us.
