When Is It Time for a Toddler Bed or Get Rid of Crib?

My daughter turns 2 next month. She sleeps fine in her crib but I know she will need more space soon. Anyone know any place where i can find a good toddler bed or "big kid" bed, preferably one that had side rails so she doesn't fall out in the middle of the night. Also, when is a good time to start the transition from crib to toddler bed? Is it hard for them to get used to it? Any suggestions are greatly apprciated.
Thanx

So What Happened?

Wow! So many things to think about. Thanks to all the wonderful women who responded to my questions. I think I will wait for just a little bit longer and perhaps buy a bed for my little girl and have her start taking naps in it, while still keeping her crib for bedtime.
Be well,
T

Hi, I am a mom of three wild boys. I had my boys in twin beds by 18 months old with the fisher price bed rail. I had trouble with them. They were so excited. Yes time is right to do it now.

Hey T.~

I don't know about anyone else but when my son started crawling out of his crib, we couldn't afford a new "big boy bed" so my husband took off on side of his crib to make it like a small day bed...and now anytime he stays over night some where, he has no problem sleeping in a normal bed. It might be a little weird but it really worked for my son! Hope that helped!!

Hey T.!

Now is the best time to do it...my daughter had no problem with the transition at all...I went straight to a twin bed...felt like it was a waste to go to a toddler bed...I had trouble finding a full length rail for the bed...I finally found one and purchased it through One Step Ahead which has a website...she did happen to fall off the bed at the end of it, but I made sure there was padding there just in case...it just scared her and it is the only time she has ever fallen off the bed.

Leave her in it until she tells you she is done with it. And if you want more room, than a toddler bed wont work, as it uses a crib mattress, so it is no bigger. I am on kid number, and it has been a little different with each child. My first, I did like most first time moms do, and took her out too early. I was more ready for her to be a big girl than she was, and so after a few great weeks, she figured out that she had her own choice to make about staying in there. My second I had to take out because she tried to climb out and almost broke her foot the way she had it wedge in there. My 3rd is almost 2, and I wont do it until he tries to get out on his own. So, wait it out, and if she does not try to climb out, maybe sometime between 2.5 and 3 would be good. Best of luck ~A.~

I use the brib as long as I can with a crib tent. when they are mature enough to stay in bed then they get a bed. A general rule is when they are potty trained they get a big kid bed...if they are mature enough to stay in bed.

Good luck- A.

Well i know that we have a wonderful resale shop here called Once Apon A Child... most of the furniture they have actually is brand new... You could try going there for a bed.... But what i did with my first was just get a twin size bed and get the railings from walmart.... that way she can grow into her bed for a long time... I am planning on doing that with my son who is 14 months now... We will start working on that in about 2 months... I would start out with having your daughter take naps in the bed first. This will take a lil bit of time due to the fact that they have this freedom that was not there being in a crib... They get used to it very quickly. I actually did not have to transition my daughter because she slept in it the first night with no problems.... Good luck!!

Hi T.,

I have 2 children of my own and I put them in a big kids bed when they were one (1). I bought a removable side rail at either Wal Mart or Babies R Us, I but the bed against a wall and installed the rail, which is easy to remove once you dont need it any more.

I think once kids start walking well and have good balance, is a good time to put them in a twin bed.

The place we bought our beds was at a little furniture discount shop in Mesquite. I spent about $100.00 for the frame, box springs and matress. That was 7 and 10 years ago and they are still like new.

Hope this helps.

I have 4 kids of my own, ranging from 13 years old to 18 months. Trust me, allow your daughter to stay in her crib as long as she can. When she can climb in and out by herself she will be ready for her "BIG GIRL" bed. All of my kids stayed till they could climb out on there own and the transition was smooth.
We started taking naps, together in the big bed and then we started to sleep in the big bed at night. Eventially we removed the crib and they were ready for the big bed all the time. Best of luck, don't give up. Just like potty training it takes paitents, time, and repitition. Have a blessed day. Jennifer B.

I ordered my daughters toddler bed through walmart.com. I had it shipped to the store so shipping was free. It also has rails on it although she still managed to fall out once or twice. The bed is only about a foot off the ground and we have carpet so she did't even wake up. She was about 1 1/2 (now 2) when we put her in the toddler bed. We had several nights of visits to our room but she eventually got used to it. We bought her Dora the Explorer bedding and surprised her with it on the bed that night. It worked and she stays in her "big Dora bed."

my advice is to keep her in her crib as long as possible!! They usually start crawling out of the crib by themselves at 2 1/2 yrs and then u know its time! i only say this b/c once they are moved to a "big kid" bed it's a whole new phase u have to go through...Getting them to STAY in their bed!!!
hope that helps...i'm a mother of 3 so i've been there/done that a few times!
