When Do You Un-decorate from Christmas?

Updated on December 27, 2011

I'm sure un-decorate is not a word, but it's late and I'm just curious.

We typically take everything down the day after Christmas. I'm sure we will this year because we are off. As much as I love the decorations and everything, it takes a lot of room and I'm always ready for my house back.

Oddly enough, I'm normally over the stuff all over the house by now, but this year I'm not - maybe because it's been SO busy...but I'm still loving it :).

So do you take things down the day after or wait a little longer?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I feel like a scrooge! LOL - kidding :). I'm always so ready for Christmas that it goes up early...and when it's over I'm ready to get back to our normal lives, which is crazy busy.

I tihnk if we don't do it when we have a day off, it would never get done :).

Fake tree and strings of lights around the house stay up til the end of January. It's so dark and grey outside that the lights inside make me feel warm and happy. The wreathe on the front door stays up til March. I take the red bow off after Christmas.

I tend to get mine up a little later than many people do (still not done...). I like to keep them up through the 12 days of Christmas, so they stay until at least January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany.

Definitely a case of "There's no 'right' way to do it!"

I like having them there through the 12 days of Christmas. Since I moved into a small apt, I have a small (2 ft) flocked artificial tree. After Christmas, I take off the ornaments, put on pretty bird ornaments, and leave the tree up until March.

If I had my way it would all be packed up by 5pm Christmas night. I'm not a Scrooge, but I'm just so done with the pine needles everywhere by then. My house is very small and I just want my house back. It usually gets packed up within a day or two after Christmas.

Most people do that, in my State.

And, since *I* am the only one that takes down and puts the Christmas things away, well, I do it when I want to.

If you put your tree and decor up the day after Thanksgiving, I think taking everything down Dec. 26 or the week of is appropriate. If you're like me and usually don't put the tree and decor up until the first week in December or after that...I leave it up through New Year's Day typically. There is no right time. However, I would not recommend having it up until February-you might get some "looks" from the neighbors (ha! ha!)

I think what ever floats your boat...just make sure your tree is not creating a fire hazard.

We always have a rockin' New Year's party (50-60 people) so that tree comes down a day or two after Christmas so we have room for people. I am usually done with pine needles by Christmas anyway...

This year our tree went up yesterday and will come down the day after Christmas...good thing it was discounted!

I've been known to get all the inside decorating down and out either on Christmas night or the day after. The outdoor decorations which are minimal come down the day after as well, especially if it is a good weather day.

Another motive for me doing it that fast other than getting my house back is that my daughter's birthday is 12/27 and there is NOTHING holiday related around for her birthday. I make sure that Christmas and her day are completely separated.

I've been known to re-wrap birthday presents that arrive wrapped in holiday paper. I also have a separate area set aside that is birthday.

I'm you. :) I am eager for Christmas, it goes up early...and it's down at LEAST the day after Christmas. We actually took ours down last night...on Christmas...and the whole family helped. It was fun, and then we cleaned, and the children enjoyed it for the promise of a huge, nice clean corner to play with all their new toys in since our house is small.

Honestly, it seems like we should leave it up until New Year's, because of the time off and the season and all...but by the time Christmas is done, I am done too! I just want my clean and ordered living room back.

I start mid January, by the last week of January just about everything is taken down and packed away. Of course this past year the manger stayed up ALL year, partly because I could not find the box and partly I like having it up all year (it is a very nice set, white with gold trim).

Love Christmas! Did you know that in India there are some churches that leave the Christmas decorations up all year, then around Christmas taken them down and put new decorations up... I would SO do this if hubby would let me.

usually with us it depends on when we get time. if christmas is in the middle of the week, etc.

this year i am super ready because my treadmill got banished to the garage and i want it back! we have to go outside to get into the garage and IT IS COLD!! i am still walking, but i want it back inside ASAP.

usually it would be the first weekend after. this year i have monday and tuesday off so it will probably go back then. yay! :)

it's always gone before new years. i feel just like you...i LOVE it at first, then by that time i am ready to get my house back. enough is enough :)

Well, I just turned on the Christmas lights tonight. I have had them up on our bushes for weeks, but only plugged in the 3 purple & 1 pink candy cane lights until today (my way of honoring Advent). My son and I decorated the tree today (also has been up a few weeks, but bare).

I will leave it all up until the Epiphany.

Indoors, January 1 for most things. Some things I leave up a little longer (mostly real plant material - I like the freshness of real greens and holly). Outdoors, I take down the lights whenever we can after January 1 - some years it's that day, other years it's weeks or months until it's safe to get on a ladder. I leave my wreaths up until March, changing the bows and decorations over to Valentine's Day decor at the end of January.

We actually just put up our tree today, so I'm not sick of things yet. All in all, our decorations are up for only 2-3 weeks at most.

We always wait until January 7 (my husband's birthday). Even before that my parents waited the full 12 days after Christmas. We always have a real tree and it is rarely up and decorated until a few days before Christmas (it is sitting outside waiting to come in right now). We have 3 of 4 birthdays in our house during the 2 weeks from Christmas to Jan 7. We consider it the holiday season until all the birthdays are over. My birthday is December 28 so for me I always liked having the holiday stuff for my birthday even though it was celebrated separately with cake and presents.

Jan 1 I start. It gets finished by end of the first week. We don't hurt ourselves trying to get it all done at once, but we like to leave the old year behind and focus on the new year ahead. (That said, it's funny that I'm not over the decorations this year yet either!)

We leave the tree and stuff up until New Year's, and then take it all down as soon afterwards as possible. We always cut down our own tree the weekend after Thanksgiving so usually by then it's got to go.

I knew of one family that would start un-decorating on Christmas Day as soon as dinner was over. I thought that was a little much - at least enjoy it for one more day!

Growing up Catholic, we always left the decorations up until Epiphany (January 6). I kept up the tradition until my oldest was born. Since her birthday is between Christmas and Epiphany, I generally take all of the Christmas stuff down either the day after Christmas (unless we go to my parent's for my dad's birthday) or it definitely comes down on New Years. It generally depends on which days I have off from work. The kids nativity scene (the Fisher Price one) has stayed out all year and will probably be moved to a bedroom after Epiphany this year.
