My 6 year old daughter started sitting up at 5 months, but for the life of me I can't remember when I started letting her try. My 4 and a half month old really likes the sitting up position when we hold her. She has good neck and chest control. I am thinking of breaking out the bumbo. Think its too soon?
Thank you all for the wonderful responses. Bumbos were not around for my first daughter, and I always used the boppy pillow with her. The bumbo is new to us so I wasn't sure what was age appropriate. I decided to try it and she did great. However, hearing what a physical therapist said made me think the use of it will be very limited. Thanks again, time to go practice sitting!
I started using the bumbo with my daughter at about 3 months b/c she too liked to sit up. She loved it. She is now 6 months old (today) and can sit up by herself but still use it sometimes. She is strating to outgrow it b/c she can almost get herself out of it by arching her back.
I have been told that the bumbo isn't a good thing until they can sit up on their own, and just need some extra support. That was from a pediatric physical therapist. There is nothing wrong with letting her sit up at that age on your lap, or holding her hands to assist her.
I don't think there would be anything wrong with letting her have a little bumbo time , I found that once mine could sit by themselves that they no longer liked the bumbo and tried to lurch forward when they were in it. You could sit her on your lap for a bit of sitting up time , what I also used to do was surround them by cushions on a carpeted area and put them in a sitting posistion and open their legs a little for support so they could sit for a few mins like that.
My DD has been sitting on her own since 3 months...If you sit her up. I never did use the bumbo, just because I couldn't afford it. She is 4 months now and trying to figure how to get herself into the sitting position... might be a while for that one. lol.
We loved our bumbo at about 3 months old and both of my girls sat up at 5 months. The bumbo isn't so great when they start throwing themselves backward though. My daughter was STRONG and fell backwards quite a few times. I won't use one with the next baby.
Sounds like she's ready for the bumbo.. But just as a word of caution, always keep your eye on her in it, of course. My daughter could get herself out of it. SHe would straighten her whole body out by arching her back and then roll to one side out of it!
I honestly think the bumbo slowed my daughter down as far as sitting up unassisted goes, I think it helped too much. My daughter didn't sit up well on her own until almost 7 months old, we used the bumbo quite a bit. As for thinking it might be too early for the bumbo at 4.5 months? No, I don't think so, bring it out! Just try that in addition to having her sit up other ways.
They can usually balance themselves (if YOU sit them up) from 4-6 months, but they usually don't actually sit themselves up (from laying down) until about the time they start crawling (6-10 months). There are 'average' ages that babies do things, but no age is 'normal' for every kid to do something. They're all different! I have a perfectly 'normal' grandson who didn't walk until 15 mo.
My daughter was 3-4 months old when I was using her Bumbo. The other thing I did was use the Boppy pillow. I would put her on the floor in the middle of it and open her legs a little for balance. She loved using both.
