I started both my boys on cereal at 4 months. They both had healthy appetites and showed signs they were ready. With my oldest, we started veggies right before he was five months and then fruits about a month later. We went through all the veggies (starting with the oragne ones - sweet potato, squash, carrots) before starting fruits. My baby is only about 4.5 months old so we haven't started him on veggies yet, but he is doing great on cereal (we did oatmeal vs rice). We'll probably give him his first veggies in a week or so.

It depends on the child. Also, if your family has a history of food allergies, you might want to wait closer to 6 months.

I started my son around 4 mo. (w/advice from the pediatrician), but waited to start my daughter until 6 mo. (even though pedia. said we could start at 4 mo.). They are both good eaters so far. However, I don't know if it is at all related, but sometimes I don't think my son knows when he is full. Knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't have started quite so early with him. There is some great information about baby readiness as well as some great easy recipies for making babies' first foods here: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/readyforsolids.htm
I love making my own baby foods. It is remarkably easy, cheaper, and so much better than the "jarred" foods in my opinion. Anyway that is another soap-box, but email me if you have any questions.
Good luck and God bless

Both of my kids doctors told me not to give them Cereal before they are 6 months old. Any earlier can cause diabetes. After they are not alergic to the cereal (a week on one type with no other new foods introduced) then I started them on Veggies. I did fruit next and meat is around 9 months. I did the veggies first because I have seen children who got fruit first and refused veggies because fruit is sweet compaired to veggies.
Only introduce on food at a time. My kids Dr. said eating the new food for a week to make sure that they do not break out due to the new food.

Honestly, as a mother of 4 (plus 2 stepchildren) and my Mother mentor having 8 children, I listened to her advice and it worked. I simply started getting the infant used to the spoon at about 6 weeks. You would be amazed, they love new things. Now keep in mind, this was just "tasting" so to speak, not starting out with a full bowl. As the infant gets comfortable and begins to eat the little bit you prepared, simply up the amount gradually to accommodate. Not only is she learning new things, you may even get a full night's rest out of the deal too! As far as fruits and veggies, I introduced them slowly at about 3 months. You want to go slow and introduce one at a time, allowing time for allergic reactions, if any, to show and for you to know which food she was allergic to. I hope this helps!!! Good luck.
