When Can I Trust My Almost 3 Year Old in the Bathroom (At Home) Unsupervised?

*** Thanks for your responses so far. Just to be clear: My primary concern is whether my children can be safe and trusted to not cause a major catastrophe if they have access bathroom while we are asleep. Both can competently use the bathroom on their own. *****

My almost three year old boy (April baby) has started waking up in the middle of the night to take his pull-up off and use the bathroom. This is great, but he has been making quite the mess. He has a small potty in his room and can usually use it without a problem except for occasionally forgetting to tuck his peepee down. The problem is that he wakes up goes and carries his potty around BEFORE he calls us to let us know he is awake. He has spilled pee all over the carpet 3 days in a row. If we take the potty away he will use his twin sisters potty which will result in a screaming fit. If we take away both potties - she will wet the bed and be very upset. Their room has access to a bathroom that we have blocked with a gate. If we cleaned out all of the soaps shampoos and even the medicines that they would have to climb for would it be safe for him to be able to go in there alone??? What other dangers to look out for/safety measures could we take?? Any other suggestions other than given them bathroom access?

I should mention that they both use the big potty AND the little potty during the day (mostly because they are twins and always think they need to use it at the same time).

What can I do next?

Well..He's an Aries..so he's gonna do what he wants to anyway. LOL..I would just put everything up and put his potty in the bathroom. Where it belongs..and he knows this, so does she. Let him be a big boy and she will more than likely follow his lead..

I would put his potty in the bathroom. May be if you have a step stool he can step in front of the potty and go pee pee. I would do this of course during the day. I think you should keep the potty in the bathroom. If the pee spills on the tile in there it will be easier than having to clean it off of the bathroom floor. that is awesome that he is waking up to use the toilet. lots of kids have accidents when they sleep. put things up so he does not get into them and let him use his bathroom. good luck

Well, my son is 3 1/2 and has had full access to the bathroom during the night for a very, very long time. I never even really thought about it before. He uses the big potty just fine...no potty seat/ring...no nothin. However, I do want to say that the cabinets under their sink are completely empty, so there really isn't much to do in there besides potty. =0) But, anyway, he's totally cool with it and we're totally cool with it.

I agree, make the bathroom safe and let them have access to it.

this depends on your kids. my daughter was able to handle this at an early age, my 3 yo son still can't be left unattended as he likes to flush things down the toilet and has over flowed the toilet multiple times when we didn't know he was in there. He also can't quite get the up and down of his clothing all the time yet. You can' start trying the unattended during the day, when you can look in on them after a few minutes. If they do okay, set some ground rules at night.

My 2 1/2 yr old is able to get into the bathroom now (altough he still need help when he uses the potty). Most of the stuff they can get hurt by is way up high or in locked areas. We store extra soap, shampoo and stuff like that on top of the stackable washer and dryer & there is no way of climbing them. One thing my kids do like doing is getting a cup, filling it with water and playing with the water (getting it everywhere). We took out all the carpet in our house (execpt at the top of the steps - slipping factor) and put in laminate floors (all 4 bedrooms, livingroom & dinning room) and tile (kitchen, bathroom & foyer) - that way they are easier to clean up messes & less issues with our kids allergies.

As for climbing - my 4 yr old love to do that... he has even climbed up on the kitchen conter then on to the store to get to the candy. Just remember - if they really want it, they will find a way to get it.
