So I am due any day now, and I'm sooooo scared that my waters going to break while i'm out in public (restaurtant, work, public transportation..etc) has that happened to u? what did you do? what do you do? I'm pretty sure cleaning up isnt whats on your mind at that time...does it have any odor? ....sigh...just curious and nervous about that (more than the pain go figure!) this is my 2nd, but first was induced, and I was already in the L&D bathroom. so this is technically my first.

What can I do next?

With my first... my water broke in a huge splash while at work. I started panicking... not because of the smell/sight/etc of it, but that it even happened. My co-workers had to get me out of the deer in the headlights mentality and told me to rush to the hospital. I continued to lightly gush for another 15 minutes. I recall it being clear and no noticeable smell.

Baby #2... my water broke early with labor but trickled. This time it was lightly stained with meconium and I didn't want to get it on anything LOL

Unlike the other posters, mine did gush out all at once onto the floor! But I was at home, luckily. It came out of nowhere.

Statistically, most women's water doesn't just "break" on it's own.
I was sick and apparently coughed so long and hard, that my water broke. While I was peeing. On the toilet. How convenient was that? LOL
Start wearing a pad....couldn't hurt, right?

My doctor broke mine.

I have NEVER seen anybody ever have this happen to them in public. You'd think it was a DAILY thing like the movies portray.

I was also fearful of this and limited my time away from home as my due date approached. My labor did start with my water breaking, however it was not all at once. It would goose out and feel much like peeig my pants. There was a warmth in my undies but no one else could tell. I think the slow leak of amniotic fluid is the more common scenario.

My daughter's broke at 33 weeks. She was working at the customer service counter at Toys R' Us. She was talking to a customer and just "whoosh" flooded. She finished the customer and looked at her boss and said "I have to go now!" She squished to the back of the store, clocked out, and then drove herself across the main part of downtown Dallas during rush hour to the hospital. No odor, no blood, just really wet pants and car seat. Maintenance cleaned it up.

I wouldn't worry about it, I think it's pretty rare. I had to have my water broken at the hospital and WOW, there was a gush. It just kept on comin'. My sister in law had hers break at home, she said it was just a trickle at first, but on the way to the hospital it came out in the car. She said it was a mess, but they cleaned it up. Her son was born at 26 weeks though, so she had complications.
I haven't heard any stories of it just gushing out all at once though, I think if it happens on it's own it's usually gradual (like you think you're peeing). But I was nervous about that happening too, when I was pregnant. :)

Mine broke at home with my first.....remember the movie Coneheads? Ya, LOL It literally was a HUGE puddle on my floor. Continued on the car ride to the hospital and made a big mess when I took my pants off in the L&D room. I know its rare, but it can happen :) My other 2, were both done by my doctor during labor

With my first, the OB broke mine during L&D (which lasted all of like 30 minutes).

With my 2nd, mine broke at home, but it was really just a bunch of "trickles." I had a cold at the time, so I wasn't sure if I was just having those "weak bladder" moments or if my water actually broke. I think I was at home changing pads and underwear for 2 hours before I even called my OB.

I'd just keep a towel, a bunch of pads, a change of undies, and a spare pair of pants in your car if you're super worried. I don't think anyone is going to make you clean up if it happens in public. I"m sure most people would just tell you to go to the hospital.

On a separate note, if your water does break, it's not necessarly URGENT!! that you get to the hospital RIGHT AWAY!! so don't panic. :) My water broke and I didn't go into labor until the next evening...and I had to be induced. I always thought water breaking = the baby's coming out soon!

I have to agree with the stats already stated...according to a SkinnyScoop poll 55% of women had their water broken by the doctor > http://www.skinnyscoop.com/question/q/1057

Very interesting stories though of the few that had their water break somewhere else! lol

I would say that you biggest concern is your car's seat. I'd put a garbage bag in the car to sit on in case it does break and you leak en route to the hospital. But as long as you're still, it doesn't come out too much. It's when you shift and walk that it trickles out.

Good luck - very exciting!!
