What Your Child Looks Like...

When you were pregnant with your child(ren), did you picture in your mind what they would come out looking like? And how close were you?

I'm told that mother's have great instinct for this kind of stuff... when I was pregnant with my son (now 5 1/2), my OB was speculating, based on ultrasound, that my son was large. But he qualified that by citing some recent research study where they asked X number of OB's, ultrasound techs, and pregnant women to estimate the birth weight of the baby, and invariably, the mother's were the closest, to a statistically significant degree.

With my son, I prayed he wouldn't have red hair. Now before I get crucified, I have red hair. So I'm not prejudiced against redheads, I am speaking from firsthand experience. I am not a firey redhead, more of a strawberry blond/old copper penny color... and red hair does not run strongly in our family, I think it's a recessive gene... the last person in my family before me to have red hair was my great grandfather, so it doesn't appear to be a dominant trait... so I had a thought that my son might not have red hair... well, he was born sandy blond, with gorgeous blue/gray eyes, and dark eyelashes. Nothing like me, and completely like his father, which is fine, his dad is quite handsome.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with a little girl this time around, and I have a strong visual idea of what I think she'll look like. I think she will also resemble her father... He has dark hair and brown eyes... and he had tons of dark curls as a baby/child... I envision my daughter to look like this... At least I'm HOPING!!! I'd LOVE to have a little girl with gorgeous hair! My son was bald until he was 3... and so was I, so I hope my little girl gets her daddys hair!

So, did you have a vision of what you child would look like? And how close, or not close, were you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ETA - Kind of in response to MzKitty's reply, I have to state this... I am not "wishing" for her to look like anything in particular. Well, except that for her sake, I hope she has her dad's hair, but even that I say half in jest. It's just that for whatever reason, when I think about this baby, I have a vivid picture of her, or how I think she's going to look. My mind just pictures her a certain way. And of course, I could be completely wrong. But it's not that I wish she was this, or that, just that I kind of 'see' her. I don't know. I didn't have this with my son, which is why I asked.

Yes, and I was totally right. I mean...right on. I thought he'd have mile long eyelashes, big eyes, lots of hair, and a pouty lip. He did and does!! I'm not a genius, I just took the traits that are most dominate in mine and my husband's families. I will say, my son looks so much more like my husband now, then I ever thought he would. Not that it's a bad thing!! He looked more like me as an infant, and just like my husband as a toddler.

It's funny, I never thought about it. I adopted my infant niece and no clue that I would be taking her or her gender. She was born with soooo much dark hair and dark eyes, her bio-dad is from Mexico and even my sister has dark coloring. I am more fair with reddish hair and green eyes, so many people assumed I was the babysitter when she was little. The friends that know us well see the relationship. Her friends from school never guessed because her dad (my ex) has dark hair so they assumed it came from him.

No. I was confused, lol.
My guys family has strong genes, and they all bet the baby would look like them. They all look like their dad.
My family has strong genes. I look exactly like my dads side of the family, and they all bet the baby would look like us.
My guy said he just hopes she had my eyes (green, his are brown). He didn't want her to have "boring brown eyes," those are are his words not mine.
As an infant she looked like my bf. After 1 she became my clone.
Since birth she's had blue eyes...just like my dad.
The only thing the ultrasound showed was chubby cheeks...but both my guy and I have chubby cheeks (mine are high and his are low). lol.

Sorry, L., but I secretly hope your baby girl looks EXACTLY like her Mama, since you are GORGEOUS!

At any rate, as long as she DOESN'T look like the mailman, it'll work out just fine, right?

Like someone else mentioned, I COULD tell a little by the later ultrasounds what the facial structure looked like. It was weird getting used to a new baby face after looking at the last baby face, too.

So no, I'd say my kids did not really look anything like I'd imagined. Even so, I recognized every one of them the moment they were born!

Cute question.

When pregnant with both my girls I just prayed they wouldn't get my nose or ears. :) I thought they would have big eyes.

My girls are so beautiful! It's hard to believe they are mine, they are just so pretty. I know it sounds full of myself, but they really are fantastic.

My two and a half year old is a copy of her daddy, but with long dark blonde/light brown curls. He sure would have been a pretty girl haha. She has his giant blue eyes, his chin dimple, and thankfully his nose and ears. :)

My almost 6 month old, we can't quite decide who she looks like. She has awesome blue eyes and a sweet smile, with the cutest dimple on her right cheek. Her ears are a little like mine, but they don't stick out like mine do (thankfully :)) and she has such a sweet little nose.

I love a chance to brag, but mostly I had weird nightmares about them being little green blobs or strange things like that. When I tried to pictrue them I found it nearly impossible. I know no matter what your little girl looks like to you she will be just the prettiest thing that was ever born.

I always tell my husband that there would be a lot less self confidence issues in teen/women if all moms thought their girls were as pretty as I think mine are. I make sure to tell them how awesome they are every day. (smart, cute, and funny too:))

My kids are mixed-race & I prayed for blue eyes for both of them because I just love, love, love the way that looks. I knew it would be next to impossible & neither one ended up with blue eyes, but they've both got the most amazingly beautiful dark chocolate colored eyes that I wouldn't change it for anything in the world!

I don't think I predicted, but yet I had an idea. I had no idea what his face would look like and I couldn't wait to see it. I assumed he would have a full head of dark hair since both his dad and I were born that way . I would've been shocked to have gotten a bald baby. I also assumed that he would have brown eyes, his dad has brown and I have blue. I know blue could be possible, but I just kinda knew they'd be brown.

Then he was born and he had the hair I predicted and the brown eyes. But it turned out that his brown eyes were gorgeous! They were (and still are) a deep brown, so dark you can hardly tell where the iris ends and the pupil begins. I was surprised about the little upturned nose. It looked just like mine did! I also was surprised at how serious he was. He just had a very serious look about him and wasn't a big crier. The seriousness is still here today.

fun post!

I never really had a vision, but I have dark hair and my husband has blond hair. We have one dark haired, dark eyed son and one REDHEAD with green eyes. The only people with red hair in our family is an aunt and uncle. So, you're not out of the woods yet!. I never expected a redhead as I never thought with my dark features it would be possible. My sons look so totally different. Their skin is about 10 shades apart. We're pregnant with our third, and I'm excited to see what we get. No matter what, you'll think your children are the most gorgeous around.

I envisioned that my son would be blonde and colored just like me with his father's long eyelashes- and I was right. My son has gray-blue eyes though, that is nowhere in either side of our immediate families. And eyelashes an inch long. I knew my daughter would be colored just like my husband- dark, wavy hair and green eyes. And she is a spitting image of him. I call her my little Scarlett O'Hara. :) They both have their daddy's feet though -poor things! LOL Go with your gut, and you will probably be right!

It was hard to envision but as my pregnancies advanced and we saw detailed ultrasounds it was clear that the babies would be born with hair and lots of it....All three were born with a lot of dark hair! I am still amazed that my DD has the bluest eyes I've ever seen....Mine are a mixture and my DH has dark brown eyes....My second has blue eyes like my Dad and the youngest is the true "mini me" of my husband...Dark hair and brown eyes....It is pretty cool in my opinion to see the mixture in our kids.

I did have a vision with all of them and have been completely wrong. I thought they would all have dark hair, none of them do. My husband is Native American, so I figured they would all have dark skin too. Not even close, they are so fair.
My 1st daughter was my twin when she was born, shes changing now. My son was my husbands twin when he was born. My new baby has red hair and looks 50% just like her sister and 50% her brother. Its so weird, its like we are all fighting inside her. lol.
I have no idea where the red hair came from. But my best friend has red hair, and she is the cutest person I know, so Im ok with it. :)

So, no, they all have been completely different than I thought they would. And my goodness, I could have never imagined having such big babies!!! Ouch!

I knew that my baby would have a head full of hair, though not this much. (He was born with two inches. At eight months, it is now over four inches and very thick and soft.) On the ultrasound I saw my father's and brother's nose, so I expected that. I had hoped for a resemblance to them, anyway, so.... I knew that he would be way cute from the start, and I had often pictured him with his chin on my shoulder and his hand in his mouth. I see him do that now, and that part looks familiar.

I don't remember ever "predicting" what my babies would look like, exactly. I did want my daughter (my 2nd child) to have red hair like her older brother but she ended up being blonde.
I do have to comment further on the red hair though. My husbands family has a lot of red hair in my children's generation. Funny thing is, none of the parents, grandparents or great-grandparents on my hubby's side have red hair. It was a recessive gene and my hubby and 2 of his 3 siblings happen to marry people with the red recessive gene too. We all have a red headed child and I have another child that isn't "red headed" so to speak but he definitely has a lot of red undertones in his hair. If you saw our family, you would assume the red heads are siblings but in fact they're cousins. We joke about it all the time, how they don't look like they belong to the family.

I knew my children would have light eyes since both dad and I do. I assumed my older one would have dark hair but both my girls were born blonde. I didn't really have any ideas beyond the light eyes and dark hair for the first child. I thought the second one would look like her sister and sure enough she did/does. I remember hoping they would get my nose instead of their dad's very prominent one. Dad hoped they would get his eyes. They didn't. They are all mom as far as looks and the older one is all dad as far as personality goes.

I honestly can't remember if I envisioned my sons before they were born. I do remember having lots of dreams about delivering them and just when the doc was gonna show the baby to me so I could know what it looked like and what sex it was I always woke up! I DID however have visions of what my granddaughter was going to look like and even after seeing 3D ultrasounds I pictured her with blond hair and blue eyes, but she has dark brown hair and brown eyes, and way more beautiful than I ever imagined.

Oh, I did. Since I have mediterranean colors (brown eyed and brown haired) and so the dad, I was super-sure my son would come out with fair skin and dark hair/eyes, just like his parent. Add that grandparents from both sides have all brown eyes and brown hair (except my mom who used to be blond), so I really never question the possibility that my child would look mediterranean. Guess what, he got blue eyes from the only great-grandfather who had them (my mother's father) and golden blond hair from my mother (the only blond of the family up until that point). He looks swedish! I could have never imagined and if someone would have told me:"you are going to have a blond boy with blue eyes" I would have definitely thought they were high on sugar or something. Genes work in a misterious way...He is beautiful, though, and he would have been with different colors as well, it's just so special for him to have inherited the recessive trait.

My three were a complete surprise in how they look. I have super straight dark hair, and the hubs has wavy blond. They all have the same exact match between the two, wavy silky dark hair. The first two have dark-almost black eyes (shocker because his whole family has blue, and I have hazel, but I'm adopted so it may be from my side) and my third has icy blue eyes with dark wavy hair. Awesome! I love seeing all the different ways kids look! My step sister has seven kids, and they ALL look different, with ALL different coloring. Your girl will be gorgeous I'm sure. Keep us posted if your prediction comes true~

I don't remember with my son, my first. But with my daughter I wanted her to have her dad's hair - it's a dark brownish auburn and natural spiral curls. Although he wears it short so you dont really notice the curls except on top a little. I wanted my daughter to have like Julia Roberts "pretty woman" hair!!!! Nope, came out bone strait just like mine except BLOND? Everyone in my family has dark hair. Apparently his mom was blond as a child.

Neither of my kids look like they're remotely related to me. It's sad. I would have loved for 1 or both of them to have some of me. I picture my daughter with lots of dark hair and green/blue eyes like me. She had no hair until age 2, and its thin and stringy like my sisters, and she has dark brown asian looking eyes.

My husband is a natural red (auburn) head. I thought for sure if the kids didn't look like me, they would look like him with freckles and all. Nope. Neither look like us. It's weird.

I don't think I imagined it very much, except I hoped they had my blue eyes (they do). Nothing against my husband's green/hazel eyes, but I was secretly hoping for blue. That is all.
LOVED my boys' 3D sonograms---how sad that someone thinks they're "gross"? What in the world??? And the funny thing: my oldest child: we have a 3D of him sucking his forearm, and that was a little habit he had as a newborn baby too. We have it framed alongside a framed photo of him doing it at about 1 month old, too.
I will say the boys couldn't look more DIFFERENT. Or BE more different (from each other). It's amazing that they adore each other, but you wouldn't really even think they're related. (One looks just like me with a big head, shorter legs/longer torso, short and kind of built kind of....like a little rugby player, AWESOME lips, and red that turns very light blond.....the other looks just like my husband with the hairline, nose, head shape, shorter torso/longer legs, tall and LEAN, blond that turns brown hair....but my eyes). Funny but I don't think we even tried to guess for either child (though we LOVED those 3D sonograms to see how they moved and how they looked.....the trick is to not wait too long so they have room to move and not be "squished" looking).

I thought my kids(all 3) would come out with black hair like their daddy.
My oldest came out with jet black hair as a baby, lost all of it a month later. Now she's 5 and has dark brown hair and is curly(kinda like me) and brown eyes after me.

My second daught came out completly bald as a baby. About a year old her hair was light blonde hair. Then but the time she made 2 it started getting darker. Now at 4 she has brown hair and is curly also(but has some blonde tints) and has brown eyes also.

Well my 3rd child,my son, I was hoping he look like his daddy. But he came out with blue eyes and kinda strawberry blondish- light brown hair(kinda hard to explain) But my father has blue eyes and strawberry color hair also. My hair is brown and curly but I have a redish-tint in my hair that you can see when I'm in the sun light. My husband has black hair and hazel eyes(which explains why our son came out with blue eyes and also from one of our parents has blue eyes also and the other brown eyes.

You never know.... Genes have a crazy way of playing rolls....But never picture them all to be like they are now. But I wouldn't change a thing. They are beautiful like they are. :)

Great question, L.!

I had a hard time envisioning my babes in the womb.
I expected them to be blue eyed and (eventually) freckly.
When I was pregnant w/ DD (#1) I braced myself that she would be an ugly baby-I like to prepare for the WCS. When I finally laid eyes on her, the first words that came out of my mouth were: "She's so cute!" Lol.
She was tiny (5lbs.12oz.) and because of her size she looked like a baby bird. And I loved her.
I don't think she really looks like DH or I. And she looks nothing like us as children.
She has green eyes and about 3 freckles on each cheek. Lol.

DS...well, mostly I expected him to look just like his sister. Their U/S pictures are almost identical.
He was 1.5 lbs. heavier than her. And while she was born w/ a tiny bit of mousy brown hair-he was born w/ a head full of coppery yellow hair. ( I was hoping for DH's dark brown).
His hair fell out and grew back just as you describe yours. :)
He has bright blue eyes and about 3 freckles on each cheek, too.
He does look like DH and I as babies. But he looks like his sister too.

Never did I imagine myself w/ a redhead. Lol.
You can put me in the "not close at all" category. ;)

My ex and I both have thick dark curly wavy hair and our son has the same. Our daughter is straight thin blond hair...whose kid is that???!!!

I was happy with having healthy happy babies and don't remember thinking so much about what they actually would look like.

Congrats on the baby girl! Hope she is everything you hope for! =)
