What Type of "Potty" to Get?

I am a mother of 3 and a daycare provider. I have found through past experience that using the potty that goes on the big toilet works great. it lets the children feel like a big person and when they are done they can flush it themselves and then use there step stool to also go over to the sink and wash their hands by themselves. Plus it saves on space in the bathroom. Hope i was some help. M., from St. Johns.

toilet. It works best for us seeing that I have a really
small bathroom. And also, why have to re-train the kids to go on the big toilet? Just my 2 cents. Hope everything

I loved the toilet seat. I used it with all three kids and it worked great. My oldest had a little potty that his Grandma got for him and he never used it for potty time he would rather use it for a coffe pot and a hat lol!

What ever works for you is best... :-)
Just make sure that what ever you get has some sort of handles on the sides so munchkin can hold on and feel like she's safer with something to grab.

If your little girl is anything like mine she will want the "big girl" potty, I started out with a stand alone princess potty for her and she was ok on it but then she saw the ones that sits right on the toilet at the store it was on sale for $8.00 so I bought it for her and she now thinks she is a big girl doing it like momma and doesn't want anything to do with the other one, thats for her babies now lol
I recomend the one that goes on the toilet, she will feel like a big girl and I'm sure you will be buying the other one anyway so she wont fall in the toilet when she starts wanting to be like you :) Good luck with the potty training, I was lucky my day care lady had 2 other kids she was potty training (they were 2 1/2 & 3) so my daughter learned when she was 19 months. She would just take there pull up's off all day and with in 2 weeks she was potty trained because she didn't like the feeling of being wet, she told me it was a rough 2 weeks but its the best way she has found to potty train. I bought my daughter a potty at about 18 months... I wouldnt do it on christams..-- make a big deal about the potty some other day.. so the potty doesnt get lost in all of the other toys that she gets taht day.

I have a graco 3 piece potty.. it has a stand alone base.. a bowl that you have to empty and a soft ring seat. The stand alone potty has a lid so you can use the potty as a step and the ring will fit on the big toilet.

It works pretty well.

I also bought a baby bjorn little potty for our second bathroom. the bathroom is small so the potty had to be really small.

I also have a folding travel potty ring that is in my diaper bag. Those big public bathrooms are pretty big and scary.

I think it is easier to start with the child on a little potty - they can put themself on and off and their feet are on the floor.

OUr daughter also started telling us "poo poo" at about 18 months... we talked about it...If I caught her in the act I would tell her she was pooping.. etc... lots of talk no training.

She trained for poop first.. at 26 months... I put her on the potty a couple of times with clothes on when she was pooping -- she cooperated.. then I took off clothes.. I knew she "got it" when I found her sitting on her potty with her clohtes on with a dirty diaper. Then I had to teach her to tell me that she had to go.. It really was pretty easy.

She trained for pee at 28 months.. I just put her in cotton panties and the first time she peed and it ran down her leg -- she was trained..

Pullups are a waste of money.

L., be careful with the ones that go on the big potty, That is what my children preferred but I know of 2 children recently that put it on their head and once it went on it dropped down around their neck and the only way to get if off was to saw it off. How scarey that has to be.

I had both and hated emptying the potty too. Plus it was always in the way. What I really ended up liking is the Flip N Flush. It hooks right in so you don't have to take it on and off. Plus it is very easy to clean. I have two kids and my second it almost two and has started to sit on it too (even though she's not quite ready to potty train either). You should be able to google search and buy it online for less than $20. You will need to know if your toilet is round or oblong.

After having a regular one that broke on us, we went and got the baby bijorn one. I highly recomend spending the money on it, it is very sturdy and easy to clean. My older sister ended up getting one for her grandson after seeing ours because he has muscle development issues so it really helped him having something extra sturdy. I can't say enough about them.

The one we got is a safety first brand. It does BOTH. When you put the seat part onto the toilet seat, the stand part becomes a stepping stool. And it was only $10.

I tried a couple of different potty chairs and I can't say taht one is that much better than another. I did have the stand alone one, and it was nice because I was able to take it to the basement when we were down there(didn't think of that until I was trying to rush her upstairs in the nick of time and got peed on).

After all the potty training was done, our toilet seat broke and when I went to buy a new one, I discovered a built in child seat for the regular toilet. It lifts like a lid and I wish I had it before (if you have oval toilets, the ones that fit in the toilet won't fit). Get a good solid step stool and put this potty seat on. Now, I don't worry about her falling in, or the little seat sliding around and pinching her hands (or falling off completely) and she is not trying to dump the bowl when she goes in without telling me. (They are 30 dollars at Walmart and sooooo worth it.

I did like having the stand alone seat for the car (I know gross). I put down a rubber backed bath matt, and put paper towels in the bowl for her to pee on (keep a roll in the car) and keep some plastic grocery bags handy. I would have her potty in the car so that she wasn't sitting on a public toilet (It started as a place for her to potty when there wasn't one around, like when we pulled into the mall and she said she had to go-I just know she couldn't hold it for 1/2 until I found the bathroom).

We got our daughter the potty that talks, she ended up playing in it but wanted to use the big girl potty. So if your little one is stable enought for the steps I would suggest the step and a toilet seat as well. My daughter was potty trained by 19 months.

hi L., i've helped to potty train my 2 daughters and 1 son. my kids all started w/ a potty chair, my girls then graduated to the toilet seat insert when they were more proficient. my son is 3 and loves the ikea potty. i do too! this is the best potty i've ever purchased. it was only $3.00, many colors to choose from and is very easy to clean. just make sure to use a non abrasive cleanser when cleaning. we just pour the urine in the toilet and rinse it out w/ water. when he has a bm we use 7gen spray and a toilet brush after we dump and rinse. good luck! my son was apprehensive about the potty until we went on our date to ikea. he picked out which color potty he liked and then we ate mac and cheese at their cafe. he had a blast!

I wouldn't do a potty at all. Have her get use to the real toilet - it is one less transition and much cleaner than cleaning a bowl of urine or poop.

If you did one at all do the one that sits on top of the adult seat. We tried that but the hole was too small so we just do the regular seat.

Make sure it is one solid piece not one that folds to bring in the diaper bag. One solid piece is much more stable.

The other mom has a good point. Don't do it for christmas. Make it a big deal long after the christmas excitement has died down.

I would also recommend reading a little about it. It is good to be prepared. Check out books from your library or go buy a couple. I recommend 1-2-3 Potty

I used both kinds, and as gross as it may seem to use a little potty chair - it's not bad at all. We went to the store and my daughter picked out a pink potty. We got the Baby Bjorn one, which is more pricey but so worth it. There's no crevices for anything to get stuck in, there's no corners, it's all molded plastic and sturdy. She loved it and from the minute we bought it, she was trained (honestly). This was at about 28 months old. She goes back/forth between the toilet topper seat - that one was more intimidating at first for mine.

I used a padded one that fit over our regular toilet. I did this mostly due to lack of space. My paretns had both at their house and my son preferred the kind we had at home. That may have just been becuase it was what he was used to, though.

I did have a stool for him to rest his feet on, too.

We got a stand alone potty that had a removable seat that fits onto the toilet. We used it as a stand alone potty when we (the parents) would go to use the toilet, then our daughters could "use" their potty. When it actually came time to potty train though, everyone preferred to use the seat on the toliet (more like mom and dad I guess). Now I should also mention, that we had two daughters 18 months apart, and we got the potty chair as a gift. When we registered for it we anticipated using it as a stand alone potty. However, the girls didn't have much of an interest in using it that way. If you don't mind spending a little more money, that may be a way to introduce the potty concept to your daughter. I think we started around 18 months with our oldest daughter.

I'm glad you aren't going to push the subject with your daughter. We first got the over the toliet potty seat, which works great, you can take it places (grandparents) and it's not too big. Then I ran into the problem of her going outside when we were playing. So I broke down and bought the other kind. I was like you and thought that was gross, but after doing it, it really isn't bad (my hubby has even done it!). Now I give her the option of which one she wants to use. She will use both and doesn't have a preference. The little seat I bought does remove from the base and the base can become a stool and you can put the top part on the toliet if that helps for the transition...I think it was $14 at Mejiers, nothing fancy. I prefer the seat that fits on top of the toilet. Grossed out by lil potty chairs. Also had a fold up seat that I put in a plastic bag in my big purse. So when we went to the store or some one elses house she could have a familiar seat and we could stay consistent and not be housebound.

Hi there. It all depends on your child. Sometimes even with a stool children feel scared on the big potty because they are up so high. Imagine doing your business 5 feet off the ground with only a stool to get up and down. Some kids like it. I'd try the cheapest route (the seat on the toilet). If she acts scared, get one on the ground.
