Hello Ladies! So here is the deal: My family does not have cable, we don't really have TV at all at the moment (no converter box or anything). It has been a while, and I find that we don't miss it all that much. However, my husband and I still like to watch something together from time to time. We follow a couple of shows on Hulu, and we will rent series on DVD from Netflix. We don't watch a lot of movies. I know there are a LOT of TV shows out there. What are some that you like? Stuff that you and your husband would both like? We don't like anything too violent or sexual. Just shows with good character development and a good storyline. We enjoy Bones and Burn Notice, and have just started watching White Collar and enjoying it a lot. I will say that Netflix has a lot of older series on DVD so feel free to include those in your suggestions as well. (I love that there are NO commercials when you watch them on DVD!) Thank you so much for your input!
A lot of repeats, but I second all the recommendations for:
Joss Whedon's shows: Buffy, Angel, Firefly (David Boreanaz from Bones is on the first two seasons of Buffy and then his character was spun off onto Angel)
Friday Night Lights - this series just ended; I'm going to miss it so much!
Pushing Daisies
The Mentalist
Veronica Mars
Alias
Grey's Anatomy
Also like:
Everwood
Glee
Gilmore Girls
Parenthood
Modern Family
Cougar Town
The Office - both the American and British versions

My husband and I love watching the show Parenthood together. It's funny, has great characters, and always leaves us with something to talk about regarding our own family. A new season will be starting in Sept., but you can probably catch up on previous episodes online. Great show... I highly recommend it!

Try Monk. It's a crime detective show, which is always fun (trying to guess who did it, etc) but it's really funny in a dry sort of way. Monk, the detective, is obsessive compulsive in an extreme way, which makes for funny material. I seriously love it, and there are 8 seasons, so that's plenty of material. If you do instant streaming on Netflix, you can get it for free.
If you haven't watched Lost, I'd also recommend that...it's the type of show that you really need to see each episode in order, so that's great for rental. I also still enjoy the Office, and Friends.

if you dont mind that it's about a teenage private detective, my husband and I both liked Veronica Mars (the first season is amazing!)
We also like:
Psych
Pushing Daisies
Alias
Firefly (great character development, but one of the characters is a legalized prostitute, so there is a bit of sexual content, but not much, it was on FOX and not cable)
Dead Like Me
Community
West Wing
Doctor Who (so much to watch! Start with the new series and work your way back if you like it)
How I Met Your Mother
Castle
Highlander
We also like the IT Crowd and The Guild, which we just started watching and have finished all they have on Netflix Streaming

My hubby likes The Mentalist...there's also one I think on TNT called Memphis Blues (another police drama type show) that he's into. We also like The Middle, Modern Family, The Marriage Ref, Grey's Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Parenthood.
Some of the cable shows we watch regularly include Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and American Restoration. I also like How The States Got Their Shapes (all of these are on History Channel). Also, Anthony Bourdain in No Reservations. And hubby is also into all the "men working risky dangerous jobs" shows like Ice Road Truckers, Axemen, Deadiest Catch, etc.

Some of these answers are interesting since you said "We don't like anything too violent or sexual." I see a lot on these lists that are very violent and sexual! However, they are great shows that my husband and I enjoy very much! Dexter is an awesome show-great story lines and acting! Season 6 is about to start, and my husband and I have watched seasons 1-5 together. However it is very violent and has a good bit of sex in it as well. My husband and I enjoy True Blood as well, again, it is violent and very sexual. I haven't found too many shows that aren't corny and don't have very good acting in them.
We enjoy Bones too! Another show you could check out would be House that one would fall in to what you are looking for. =] 24 is pretty good, hubby likes that one better, but I can tolerate it without trying! CSI is good to, but again there is a good bit of violence.
The Closer and Law and Order would probably work for you guys too!

Have you tried streaming onto your TV from netflix? it's how we watch most of our netflix shows...and there are no commercials.
We enjoy watching Hoarders and Obsession (both are reality shows with obsessive people). I'm sure there's more, but I really can't think of any! We also watch on Hulu Plus (streams to our TV so we watch it there). We really like Wipeout and Extreme Makeover: Weightloss Edition. I also like Bones. I'm too tired to think of more;-)

If you are looking for comedy, Modern Family is my favorite right now. Another show that I find almost as funny as modern family is The Middle. It did take a couple of episodes to grow on me. It's hilarious, but doesn't get the hype that Modern Family does.
If you you are looking for a drama, then Lost.

Big Love--maybe an acquired taste, but I really love it
Mad Men--everyone loves it, you can't go wrong!
Veronica Mars--don't let the synopsis fool you it is brilliantly written (but skip season 3)
Breaking Bad--dark, but good
Weeds--funny and dark...oh, I wish I could just start over and see every episode again...it's my absolute favorite
6 Feet Under--wonderful, wonderful characters--best finale I've ever seen!
Twin Peaks--older but absolutely awesome for character development (but don't watch the finale)

What about "The Office?"
Or Hawaii Five-0? I'm partial to this show of course.
But summer are all reruns now.
The new season of new episodes, starts in I think, September.
Or "House."
Or, "La Femme Nikita." A great, past tv show series. It is on DVD now and for renting. Awesome show and actors.

My husband and I are on season 4 of The Pretender. It ran from 1996-2000. Pretty awesome.
I saw a few people mention Criminal Minds, I tried getting into that show but found it way too creepy and disturbing.
