What Toy/game Can Hold the Attention of a 4-Year-old Boy?

Hi Moms! My little guy is turning four soon, and I'm looking for suggestions of toys/games for his birthday. In the ideal world, I want something that he can play/use by himself that will actually hold his attention for more than 5 minutes - is there actually such a thing? We have a lot of toys/games/sports equipment he can play with others, but I would love to see him absorbed in some activity on his own every once in a while. Is there something that has captivated and kept the attention of your little guy/gal? Thanks for any suggestions!

What can I do next?

Mega Blocks, puzzles, books/Highlights magazines with activities like mazes/seek & find/dot to dots/stickers, LeapFrog Tag learning system, learning carpets kind with roads/firehouses (I bought a used one in good condition on Amazon. My DS plays with his hotwheels cars on it all the time).

With his mega blocks he will even make mazes, parking spaces and tunnels using construction paper/tape to play with his hotwheels too. He doesn't stack them, just puts them side to side =-)

Legos. Our son really got into them when he was four and still can play with them for hours now that he's seven. Next to video games (ugh), they're the only thing that holds his attention. Lego makes sets with so many different themes, there's bound to be one that your son will love.

V smile hand held games. It is like a gameboy but educational, and you can get games in his favorite characters.

Wooden blocks, cars, Legos. These seem to occupy a lot of time for my preschool students. They like toy dinosaurs too.

My four year old loves his leapster. It keeps him occupied and its educational. I know there are a lot of people that would roll their eyes at these handheld games for a 4 year old, but he only has 2 games and has a limited time each week.

Also as much as I hate it, playdoh will keep him busy for HOURS.

I also agree with the coloring books with mazes and dot to dots. We also do a lot of tracing of letters and numbers. He loves to color as well.

My son just turned four, and loves race cars. Hot wheel tracks are good. I let him play on the PS3 and his older brother has DSI that he has figured out.

My son loves his Tag reader- it goes with us on road trips, plane trips, everything. It is expensive- but I figure it is better than some of the alternatives.
