Seems way low to me too. A friend of mine in MI gets $40/hr. (She is a math teacher that also tutors, and here I think $50/hr is the going rate--even at half for a college student--I'd thin 20-25/hr.
I'm having a college freshman tutor my 7th grader in pre-algebra and english. this is her first time as a tutor and my first time hiring one, and I have no idea what to pay her! I said $10 an hour and she said that sounded good, but my husband thinks I should pay her more. what's the going rate for a tutor?
thanks for the input everyone! we've decided to pay her 20 an hour although she doesnt know this yet!

Woah, that seems way low. I don't know what the going rate is where you are, but around here (Boston area) you can't really find anyone to tutor for less than $25/hour. College graduates etc often earn $50-100/hour.
WOW, $10/hour. She is behind the times on that one.
In our area... math, language arts, foreign languages, etc at $50+ an hour
daughter's private cheer coach is $30/ 1/2 hour
private violin is $45 / 45 minute lesson
I'm guessing if it is a colege student, you might get a little lower than $50. You get what you pay for....
I would think that is low for your area. I pay $25 an hour for my son's tutor and that is with the tutor helping two kids at once.
I was paying mine $25 an hour
Why not stick to the ten dollar an hour rate, since she has already agreed to that. Then after you see how well she is doing with the tutoring, you can either choose to give her a raise, or give her a bonus for a good job.
Ok it has been 15 years since I was in college, but at that time I got $5/hr. I tutored the girl 4th-5th grade for 2 hours once a week. Her mother came and picked me up and took me to their house. Sometimes she would feed me. She also gave me $50 for Christmas. I got to know the family, and when neither parent could attend for field day they asked me if I would come to the school to cheer on the little girl. I don't think I let them pay me for going either.
So really for a college freshman with no experience I don't think that's too low. Keep in mind though that college kids are always up for free food.
I think it's too low. She could make almost $10 an hour flipping burgers. She deserves more.
My son is a college senior. He is majoring in Actuarial math. He gets $15 to $20 an our for tutoring math and english. And more than that when he tutors in music theory. I think if this is the college freshmans first tutoring job then $10 is great especially if she agreed to it. But if it is a more experienced one who is able to work with your child on whatever level your looking for you might need to pay more.
I'm a Spanish tutor, hold a BS and I charge $30/ 50 minutes out of my own home. If I have to drive to the child's home then I charge $45/ 50 minutes.
It depends on her experience, how much you value her knowledge (if she is very sharp and knowleadgeable then maybe pay her a bit more...), and how happy you are with her services.
Good luck!
We paid our daughter tutor $20. per hour, but she had her Masters in Mathematics and had been a teacher for many years. $10 to $15. per hour is very fair. Oh and we drove to her home.. Is this one coming to your home? That would be a good reason to pay more.
As a certified teacher I would charge $30 an hour. Since she isn't a teacher, $15-$20 would be about right.
As an SAT tutor, I get paid $30+ per hour. When I do academic tutoring, I charge about the same. My son's tutor, who specialized in learning disabilities, charged $45 an hour. I would start with $10 an hour as a trial (she seems to think that's fair) and let her know that if this works out, you will raise her rate after 30 days or something.
