What Products Work Best for 9 Month Old with Eczema and Dermatitis

My 9 month old has battled Eczema since the day he was born and I have tried EVERYTHING over the counter with very little success. I am now using prescription Hydrocortisone 2.5% and am still not having luck getting it to go away, not to mention that I can't use it on his face. I am also struggling with his fingers and chin right now because he is teething and sucks his fingers as comfort, so his little chin and fingers are red and chapped from all the moisture. Any products that you would recommend?

What can I do next?

Hi J., my daughter had eczema as a young child (2-3)years old and I too tried everything under the sun. The only thing that worked was Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream. I know it sounds ridiculous but, I had been using it as a lip cream cause my lips would get so chapped. I used it on my daughter in the morning, at night and after baths. The dry patches in the crook of her elbows completely went away. It really works.

My daughter had eczema really bad when she was a baby. We would bathe her (Johnson products are really bad on their little skin by the way) and then while she was still wet, slather Eucerin cream (the really goopy stuff) all over her. It worked really well. My son didn't have it quit as bad and we were able to just use Aquaphor. My daughter is now 9 and we battle it occasionally but the Eucerin is what works the best for us.

We got a product off of the internet that a babysitter recommended. It is called FreeDerm and it worked really well for us. Someone else recommended Ellidel, but I would really read about that before trying it. I was too scared to put it on my baby. Also get allergy tested. We learned a lot from that doctor.

Try the Arbonne Baby line. Their lotion and baby oil work wonders for my daughters eczema!! I tried using the hydrocortisone (which our pedi only allowed us to use a week at a time because of the steroids) and aquaphor but they never cleared it up. As soon as I used solely the Arbonne products, her patches cleared up right away. Good luck!

The reason I started using and selling Arbonne products is because of my son's eczema. I had also tried everything over the counter and all of the treatments I could get off the internet. It takes about 2 weeks to begin to see a difference but the product is AMAZING. I would love to talk to you more about the products.

I know that you are probably overloaded right now with everyone trying to sell you their treatment options, just let me know if you would like for me to send you a sample of the ABC line from Arbonne. I would be glad to mail it to you.

Hope your little one gets to feeling better soon. I know how hard it is...

Try bathing your baby with Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Treatment and follow with Cetaphil lotion. My baby really improved with this regimen. Her pedi also gave her Ellidel, but I don't like to use often and it can result in skin discoloration. Ever since we atrted using Aveeno Baby Bath Treatments and Cetaphil her skin has been great - we don't even use the Ellidel. She just turned 1 and has the SOFTEST skin. Hope this helps, I know it is difficult to see your baby this way.

My son has excema, & he uses Elidel. Works like a charm, and doesn't have the side effects like the steroids do.

My son was born with eczema and his skin would crack and bleed like cuts...I bathe him with dove soap and used lubriderm mixed with auquaphore that seemed to help really well. Both can be bought at any drug store or walmart, now that he is older cetaphill (I bought at Sams) works great I love it...it doesn't seem to burn his skin like lubriderm can. good luck

In addition to the cortizone prescription, apply Aquaphor as many times a day as you see fit on the fingers and chin. It helps heal and form a barrier for those trouble spots.

Dove Sensitive is a good bar soap. Eucerin is a standard allover cream, but my daughter's dermatologist just suggested Cerave, found at CVS, and it doesn't have quite the greasy feel of Eucerin. I like it so far.

I wish I could say I've had success with organic or alternative treatments, but none so far. For my dd, we just avoid her allergens when we can and sometimes have to give her a prescription med. to reduce the itching. The products I mentioned have been the best to help us control the eczema.

All 3 of my boys have SEVERE eczema. We had tried several different prescription creams until we maxed out on the steroid dosage. The dermatologist even told us that he would not prescribe a higher dosage of steroid because of all of the side effects! We had also tried just about every lotion on the market (including Eucerin, Aveeno, Jergens, Cetaphil, Aquaphor, etc) but NOTHING worked!

I knew SOMETHING was causing their eczema but we couldn't identify the cause. The son of a good friend has severe asthma and eczema. She discovered that his triggers were chemicals in cleaning, laundry, and bath & body products. So many people don't think about this as a trigger. I sure didn't. Then I converted our home to products that do not have formaldehyde, chlorine, ammonia, or phosphates. Within 3 weeks, my twins' skin was almost completely clear. We were amazed and their pediatrician is amazed as well!

I would love to tell you all about the products that have changed my family's life so much. We shop at Melaleuca now and not only do our babies feel better, we are saving a bit of money too! Email me at ____@____.com can also visit my business website at http://deanaorear.themomteam.com.

Hi J.,

I agree with the Arbonne recommendations. Both of my children have really bad eczema--we tried everything over-the-counter and were about to turn to prescription drugs because my children were in such horrible pain. I did not want them to be on prescription drugs, but it broke my heart to see them suffering, as I'm sure you know how that feels! Then, my neighbor introduced me to the Arbonne baby products. I was amazed at the difference it made. I noticed a difference in 4-5 days. The Arbonne baby products are the main reason why I decided to start a home-based business with Arbonne--I believe in the products and the company whole-heartedly.

If you'd like to try the products for a couple of weeks (no obligation or pressure), please let me know, I'd be happy to share them with you. Arbonne really believes in letting people "try before you buy." All the products are botanically-based and do not contain mineral oil or animal products. Plus, they are all hypo-allergenic and dermatologist tested. Please let me know if you're intersted in trying the products--I promise there is no pressure or obligation--I know exactly how you feel and was in your shoes at one point--willing to try anything to help my children.

Good luck in finding what works best for your baby boy. Take care!

Your doctor should be able to prescribe a ointment that is a mix of a steroid with antibiotics. It heals and clears up the eczema.

My son has suffered from eczema since he was a baby. When we learned of his mulitple food allergies, we avoided those foods and found that his eczema is almost nonexistent. You may want to consider food allergies as a source. My son is allergic to wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, and soy. Soy is the worst for him.

Cetaphil is what the allergist recommended that we use to bathe him with.

Good luck!

J.,
My daughter who is 10 mos old has eczema, too...esp on her face, and we've tried many products (Melaleuca, Arbonne, over the counter products, etc...)..and the best things that have worked for us are: protopic (prescription) and aquaphor. We occasionally use hydrocortisone cream, but I don't like to use it on her face very often. At our last MD visit, he also put her own Zyrtec (for allergies), which has seemed to help, too. If it doesn't go away, we will probably get her allergy-tested as well. We have also noticed that it is worse when it is cold outside...like this weekend!!!

Good luck! I know how difficult it is!

I know you have tried every over the counter ... but just wanted to recommend this product as it worked great for my son .... Gentle Naturals - baby eczema cream. I just got it at Target and it worked WONDERFULLY and cleared his patches all right up. After a bath, I'd slather it on all over him ... he'd be cute and shiny. ;-) This was by far my favorite product. You've probably already tried it .. but thought - just in case you hadn't - perhaps try it.

Have you tried to eliminate the trigger for his skin problems? My little boy had tons of problems that were all due to food allergies. At your son's age these as well as tree nuts and soy are the most common allergins. My son is allergic to dairy and eggs. Once we eliminated those trigger foods, his skin cleared right up. In the interim, I suggest using sensitive skin Dove for cleaning and Aquaphor treatment for moisture. Good luck!

My little boy, who is now 19mos., has suffered from Eczema since he was born as well. I am sure that everyone is different but for my DS Eucerin always burned when I put it on him. I also have Eczema and it does the same thing to me when I use it. Aside from the steroid creams that we have the thing that we have found to work the best...Vaseline. We had to use so much on so much of his body that we used to lovingly call him "grease monkey." Also, someone suggested baby oil but my doctor said to never use baby oil on flare ups because it clogs the pores rather than allow the moisture to get in the skin. Hope this helps...

Hi J.. I read your post and just had to respond immediately. My heart goes out to you and your little one.
I HIGHLY recommend Arbonne's Baby Care products to help your baby. I have many friends and clients (from newborns to adults) who swear by Arbonne International's Baby Care Line to control and eliminate their excema, cradle cap and other skin care issues.
Arbonne's products work for most people because they are: Hypoallergenic, pH correct, 100% certified Vegan, herbal and botanically based. Also, Arbonne doesn't use mineral oil, chemical dyes or fragrances, or any animal products or by-products! The reason we don't use those ingredients in our products is because they can be highly allergenic for many people.

Here's a little more information about the philosophy of this fabulous skin care system:

Sensitive skin — at five months or 55 years — requires special skin care. Pampering delicate baby and extra-sensitive adult skin is as elementary as ABC: Arbonne Baby Care. From hair and body wash, to diaper rash cream and sunscreen, Arbonne Baby Care has every inch of sensitive skin covered. For fundamental, sensitive skin care needs, just remember your ABCs: Five products that soothe, nourish and protect skin ... from the day life begins.

I would be happy to send you some FREE samples, please feel free to visit my website to contact me at: www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com. Good luck finding something that works for you and your family!

Eucerin is great, expensive, but great. I used to mix it with a little baby oil becuase it's so thick. I'd put it on twice a day. I'd just smooth it on and leave it at night without rubbing it in. In the morning, I'd put on more and rub in so that it was not seen.

Aquaphor is the only thing that works for my 2 year old. I'm sure you have probably already tried that so I am gonna suggest what a doc told my friend for her daughters SEVERE eczemaabout a year ago. Original, white Crisco. It is noting but fat and the moisture saoks in completely. I thought she was full of it, but it worked. her daughter is almost 4 and has essentially clear skin. food allergies don't help her.

Hi J., I am a customer of a wonderful health and wellness company who has a wonderful lotion for Dermatitis and eczema it actually beat eucerin in a blind study test which is the #1 dermatologist preferred brand it is so soothing and healing and best of all safe no harsh chemicals! The key too w/ that is switching your detergents and soaps and even the cleaners that clean the bathtub overall switching your home to safer products because all those chemicxals we get from the store are so harmful in many ways. This will actually save you money and one of the best parts is it comes right to your door! All their products have a 60 day money back guarantee and i have personal experience w/ athma and eczema so i can tell you it works! They have everything you buy at the store and none of their products contain harsh chemicals. If you would like to find out how to get this I can give you more detail. Email me directly at ____@____.com or you can give me a call ###-###-#### I hope if you are not interested in this which i'm sure you are willing to try anything to help your baby but if not I hope you find what it is you are looking for to help your baby! I went thru the same things with my ds when he was a baby. I see that you have gotten a lot of great advice. A couple of more would be to wash all of his bedding in hot water and use a detergent like All Free and Clear. Put covers on all of his pillows and mattress. You should ask about Protopic. It is not a steriod cream and you can use it on the face. My ds was in the study the day he turned two. Now they prescribe it for little ones. Another thing is nice long baths two or three times a day. As soon as he gets out of the tub slather him up with lotion, within three minutes is the suggestion. We all know that may be a little hard, but the fastest you can with a little one.
Hugs,
K.

My little girls had eczema until she was 1 yr. she had red rashes all over the entire year. I finally took her to a Pediatric Allergist (Dr. Vanwagner - who was wonderful and several of my friends now use him for their kids too). He did a pin prick test (we thought her's was a milk allergy) but he put her on singulair (we added it to her bottle/later sippy of milk) and also zyrtec for itching and either these two perscriptions really did the trick or it was timing and she just grew out of it...all we knew was this was the first time in her life she had clear, soft normal baby skin....we could not believe our eyes...hope this helps...
