What Is Going on with My 2 Year Old Daughters Hair?

I look back at pictures from approximately april-may and my daughter had such a nice full head of hair then. Over the last month or two...I noticed that it was falling out in pretty large pieces. I switched shampoo...tried conditioner...tried to not put it up in rubber bands so much. So two weeks ago we took her to get it trimmed up a little. Now it almost looks as if she is balding or something...it is very thin and boyish looking. I can't do anything with it. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a loss of hair with their kiddos and how long did it take to come back!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

SO I just realized that I never followed up with the "what happened". It wasn't anything medical, it was just the simple fact that the hairdresser chopped entirely too much off of her already fine hair and it took forever to grow back! WE finally have hair now! YAY~

Dermatologists are the physisicians who deal with hair loss. It will be difficult to find one that deals with child hair loss. I totally agree that you need to look into this.

Here are some picts of different types of hair loss, maybe that can point you in the right direction.

Other things not addressed here are thyroid imbalance, vitamin dificiencies, and autoimmune disorders.

Again, a dermatologist is trained to find the causes of hair loss.

Best wishes.

I think you should take your dauthter to a doctor to have her head/hair checked out. I haven't heard of kids losing large amounts of hair, unless there was a medical problem. This worries me. If her pediatrician is clueless, take her to some sort of a specialist. Research this. Look into this. Don't dismiss this. Good luck!

If you do take her in to the doc make sure you take a pic of what it use to look like that way they know the difference.

I would go to the doctor and talk to him about that an other possible symptoms. This could be serious or nothing, but I think you need to get some blood test run.

I would talk to your doctor. I have a 2 year-old and her hair is getting thicker. I know every child is very different so this may be normal. However, I just have never heard of this before so may be good to just get some things checked out. Good luck!

Definitely call the doctor. It is usually internal when someone loses that much hair. Goo luck.

I agree with all previous posts...start with your doctor. Not to get you any more worried, but my cousin started losing her hair like this as a small child. My aunt was terrified that she may have leukemia, so she sought medical attention. Turned out, she was diabetic. Her pancreas was NON-functioning. Like one of the previous posts said, it could be nothing serious, but I wouldn't take the chance on not finding out.

My son's did that when he was a newborn. His dark hair fell out in patches and new hair came in. But I have not heard of that in a 2 year old. You might want to ask your doctor. I know vitamin deficiencies can cause hair loss.

I would have her checked by her pediatrician. It could be a serious problem. Don't let him tell you to wait and see. Have bloodwork done now.
