What IS a Mom's Group, and How Do I Get Involved in Meeting People?

If you like reading, would you be interested in a book club? There is one that meets in Southlake on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesday evenings (I live in Bedford).

Welcome to the DFW metroplex. I'm not in the mid-cities area, but encourage you to go to the MOPS.org website and see if there are any MOPS groups in your area. (MOPS stands for Mothers of Pre-Schoolers - anyone with children newborn to Kindergarden is eligible). I met a lot of great moms through my MOPS group when my kids were younger. Good luck!

I would suggest that you start with MOPS I can't remember what the accronym stands for, but it is an international organization ususally connected to a church. You will meet a wide variety of moms. You can find a MOPS group by going online and typing in you zip code and will give you the different MOPS groups that meet in your area. Another group is MOMS, I don't know as much about them, but I strongly suggest something. IF it had not been for the different moms groups along the way I would have never survived the transition to staying at home, or moving, or husband being gone for training for 4 months shortly after we had our second.

I live in Keller -- and am a member of a couple of mom's groups... first I joined MOPS which runs during the school years -- Mothers of Preschoolers. It's run through a lot of local churches... GREAT way to be involved with other adults -- where childcare is provided on site...

I'm also a member of the Grapevine Colleyville Southlake Mom's League. www.gcsmomsleague.org It's a fantastic resource that has playgroups, monthly meetings, charitable events, seasonal/holiday parties, book club, bunco nights, girls night out, couples' nights out... it's a GREAT way to reconnect to adult conversation! :) (and lots of the moms do NOT live in Grapevine, Colleyville or Southlake... so it's for "local" moms really)

Hi A.! I'm the president of the Hurst/Euless/Bedford MOMS Club (Moms Offering Moms Support). We're an international organization that meets the first Thursday of each month at First United Methodist Church of Bedford (at 183 and Bedford Rd) - though we are not affiliated with the church or any religious group (they're just gracious enough to loan us the meeting space). We often have guest speakers at our meetings, and throughout the month we have playgroups (divided by age), field trips, park days, etc. Once a month we have Mom's Night Out and either a Family Day or a Couple's Night Out, and we do a service project each year to benefit area children and/or moms in need. We have quite a few moms with infants (my youngest will be 6 months next week), and we would love to have you join us for a meeting or activity to see if our group meets your needs! I am also a member of MOPS, a group that a previous poster mentioned, and my chapter meets at First Baptist Church of Euless (at 183 and Industrial) the first Wednesday of every month. However, they take a hiatus during the summer and start up again in August. MOPS is more mom-focused than MOMS Club, with more emphasis on fellowship for the mommies and not very many activities for the kids outside of the monthly meeting. Both are great groups; it just depends on what your needs are. As your son gets older and more mobile, you'll probably be more interested in activities for him throughout the month.

The group that I belong to chats via email and strives to have at least one playdate a week. We go to places like the park, play area in the mall, zoo, museum, etc. Some of the ladies have play dates at their homes as well. We also try to have a mom's night out once a month. If you would like more details let me know!

An Early Childhood PTA and library time are other good ways to meet moms. You may check and see if your neighborhood has playgroup. And I agree, it is well worth it. I don't know what I would do without my groups. I made so many new friends that I hang out with outside of the scheduled playgroups.

Here is a list of Texas PTA and ECPTA (you want an ECPTA) and you don't have to live in that 'area' to be a member. I belong to the Carrollton branch and we have members from all over.

My church is in Southlake Tx. It has daily womens groups, for all kinds of women. New moms, to shopping moms, to single women. It is really great, and the women have a lot of fun. The website is www.gatewaypeople.com YOu should check it out. And they meet in all different places, in the midcities.

Try looking up a group on www.meetup.com I have found a couple of great groups near me on there. There is also http://www.mops.org/ Mops is a Christian group, so depending on your beliefs that may be a way to go. You could also look into local chuches. Some of the larger churches around here have moms groups. I know some moms that do that also. You could also try enrolling your son in an activity such as Little Gym/Kindermusik/My Gym/Gymboree/Swim Lessons, etc. and meet other moms that way. Finally, look at www.yahoogroups.com and do a search for moms groups in your area. I know there are a few for Dallas/Greater Dallas. Good luck, I am sure you'll find a group!

It is well worth it. I am so thankful for my groups.

There is a website called meetup.com. Go there, search for groups in your area and you will find numerous groups to join. I'm a member of the Mansfield SAHM group....I love it! Not only do we get together weekdays for our kids to play (not to mention for us to have some fun!) but we try to make Mom's day/night out too. Good luck!

We have professional Childcare for the kiddos which allows us a 2 hour window of grown-up momma talk. Each month we have a different topic/guest speaker or craft and breakfast for the moms. I have been a member of Mothers and More for 4+ years now and I still love our group. We are a national organization that supports all moms, working, SAHM, formula feeders, breast feeders, moms of infants, mom of teens, co sleepers and not. Shot givers and no shot givers. One member said not to long ago that she loved our group because any issue she is having, she can find someone that totally agrees and one that totally disagrees and it is ok because in the end we do what is best for our family without judgement. Our group is called greater lewisville, but at the moment we are more greater than lewisville. We just adopted the Plano area and are in the process of adopting the mid cites area. We offer weekly/biweekly playgroups, monthly meetings,book club, Moms nights out, Dads nights out, Family nights, Date nights. There is room for everyone!
