What Happened to My Good Napper?

Ok, my LO has never been a good napper until we went down to one nap - around 11 mos. Then she slept like a dream! 11-12 hrs at night, 1.5-2.5 hr nap during the day. I couldn't believe it! Life was GREAT!

Now the last few days she is up to her old tricks. I seriously can't take it. After nearly a year of nap HELL I do not want to go back there. I am out of patience. I also nap when she naps as I am a horrible sleeper at night, so her naps are precious to me.

Here is our sleep routine:

7:30am-ish - wake
12:30-2:30pm - nap
8:00pm - bed

The last couple of days she has had a hard time going down for her nap. Yesterday she woke after 1 hr 20 min - screaming, and I was able to rock her back to sleep. She slept for another HOUR, and cried when I woke her. Huh?

Today she cried for 15 minutes before falling asleep, woke after 45 min, and I could not use any form of tricks to get her back to sleep. I tried getting her back to sleep for an hour. No way, no how. She just wanted to play.
Huh? Seems opposite of yesterday!

Last night she had several night wakings - none that were too long, and she put herself back to sleep, but I am nervous where this is headed.

Thoughts?

Please help. I can't do this nap hell again! I would love some advice.

P.S. Not sick, no fever, no Separation anxiety, and no teething, so I am frustrated and confused!!!

What can I do next?

how old is she now. you may want to try to move her nap a little later try from 1-3, 2-4. about 20 mos my daughter started napping later... i don't let her go past 4PM b/c then it messes with her night time.

i think you need to work on letting her play in her crib by herself. my daughter loves her crib. she's 2.5 now and doesn't necessarily nap all the time but she will play quitely in her crib for the 2 hours. soemtimes she gets up early in the AM, and she just plays in her crib and doesn't yell out for us or anyting until she hears our door open, or i open her door.

i have her and a 7mos little boy - so yes i try to get us all to nap at the same time too..... even if she doesn't sleep in her crib... she needs to be able to play in there quitely for the 2 hours so you can sleep too.

even at night time she's in her crib at 8pm.... sometimes she's asleep within 15/20 minutes... other times i hear her playing up to an hour.... i go in and tell her it's time to go to bed and stop playing. she has 3-4 stuffed animial in there with her and i can hear her talking to them, tucking them in etc...

Sometimes my daughter has a rough time sleeping for a couple of days for no apparent reason and then a few days later a tooth breaks through the gums. The same thing happens with her before a big developmental leap. Maybe it's one of these situations, in which case it'd be temporary and positive. Best of luck.

Hi G.,

Are you sure she couldn't be teething? When my DS was teething it didn't really bother him. Then we started having naps like the ones you describe. A few weeks later his molars came in and he was fine after that. I didn't think it was teething at first, because I couldn't see the bumps. Once I suspected that it was teething, I gave him a little baby tylenol before nap and that seemed to take the edge off so he couls sleep better.

Good luck!

J.

If she's learning something new - like walking, perhaps - then it may be harder for her to power down her brain for naptime. If that's the case, then she'll be back on track as soon as the burst of brain development plateaus. Good luck!
