I am from Malaysia and very confuse about the education system here. Private school is way too much money compare to public school. My son is going to be 4 next year, is about the time to go pre-k. Any good comment about Public School?
Thanks for all the information. My husband and I bought a townhouse here at Westchase area(HISD school district) two years ago. At that time,we are still not sure whether we want to stay here in US for long or not so we choose this location. Now, when our son is approaching the school age and we decide to stay here for long, we got headache in choosing school. I heard the FortBend district is good and thinking to move to Sugarland. It depends on the school district you are zoned to as to if you are eligible for public pre-k. In some districts they offer it to all that are going to be by Sept. 1, others have some requirements like you have to qualify for free or reduced lunches, not speak english, be homeless, or have learning disabilities check you area and find out through the district
I do not know where you live but we live in Sugar Land and have found a wonderful school that is unbeleievably inexpensive because they have received some large grants. It is called Stepping Stones and is on S. Wilcrest, Houston TX. My son is 4yrs old so he would be his class, and my son LOVES his teacher.

Generally speaking the public schools in the suburbs are pretty good, the ones in Houston (HISD) often not so. If you are concerned but don't have too much money, you should relocate to Sugar Land, the Woodlands or other suburbs and commute. You can find school ratings somewhere on the internet. Watch out though, it can vary within a district, too.

At 3-years-old your child should learn all of his letters and learn to count to at least 10. Go to the teacher's store at the corner of Hwy 59 and Fondren or the one in Sugar Land off of Hwy 6 and Lexington, it's in that neigborhood. Coming from 59 you turn left onto Lexington and make another left at a shooping center behind a dentist office, if I'm not mistaken. At these stores purchase the ABC and 1-20 puzzles, read to your child daily, when you use the microwave allow your child to set it so he can learn his numbers in a creative way. Also, teach him the basic colors. I did all of this for a year and when my daughter entered Pre-Head Start at age 3 she was ahead of all of her classmates and at 4-years-old I taught her to write all her letters from using the connect the dot work sheets. There is a website that will allow you to print these worksheets. If you want it I will look for it.
Parent involvement and consistance is the key. Eliminate a lot of TV time. The schools in Missouri City close to Sugar Land and the schools in Sugar Land are pretty upscale and advanced so if you're in that area you are okay.

Im not fond of the public school system, my children are 6 and 8yr and attend Southwest Christian Academy. The cost is very reasonable and the college turnover rate at this school is extremely high. The student teacher ratio is nothing like public school, so your child is able to get that one on one attention.
The cost per child is 385.00 per month
VERY VERY cheap compared to Montessori schools, I wouldnt recommend anyone putting their child in a Montessori school, my oldest son went and didnt learn anything, they let the kids learn at their own pace which is bull. And the cost was highway robbery 650 a month, thats almost the cost of two kids at the school they attend now.
The school my children attend is very diverse, they have a lot of chinese/hispanic/african/indian american children. My children love the school and the staff is wonderful. If you would like more information you can email me. I think you have my email address.

Have you tried Headstart, my son went to headstart here in SugarLand..and you dont have to be poor for that. You just have to hurry and enroll b/c everyone is trying to get their kids in.
It depends on where you live. Katy is also a good district. A private school very near you is the Village School, they start at 3 by Septmeber 1st. Let Mary know that L.
