Just curious: what do you all like to grow? Last year I grew

rosemary
basil
peppermint
cilantro
flat leaf parsley
eggplant
cauliflower
bell peppers
heirloom and grape tomatoes
watermelons
snow peas
green beans
and we'll see if my grape vine returns, I sorta doubt it.

Give me your ideas please!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your ideas! I'm gonna go draw up a scale map and figure out how I'll put in so many great suggestions. Julie, I'm going to cross post this, but I got my composter through Hennepin county at a reduced rate:

That sounds like so much fun. I recenlty moved to River Falls and we live in a townhome where we can not plant outside in the yard. We do have a deck off the upstairs, so I am thinking about container gardening, but don't know anything about it. Can you give any advice?

everbearing raspberries
rhubarb
red alpine strawberries
white alpine strawberries
3 different colors of bell peppers
cherry tomatoes
yellow pear tomatoes
basil
cilantro
carrots
5 varieties of lettuce (we plant the lettuce in a big pot so the bunnies can't eat it)

this year we are trying to find room to add dill, 2 varieties of squash, broccoli, and peas (my 3 yo son loves planting seeds!)

I plan my garden around my recipes. We always make pickles and can salsa so I always grow cucumbers (three varieties),dill, tomatoes (several varieties from cherry and yellow pear to Big Boys and other heirlooms), hot peppers, sweet banana and cherry peppers, red, yellow and purple bell peppers, onions, garlic, chives, green onion. I also love beans so I plant a lot of bush beans; even my kids love just pulling them off and eating them. And we plant carrots every year which is the most fun for the kids in the fall to dig up. We've also done broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, romaine lettuce, snap peas, petit pan squash, yellow and green zucchini squash, and cataloupe. I also usually grow more herbs, but in planters on the deck. There we have sweet basil, cilantro, lavendar, oregano, coriander, thyme, rosemary, and lemon basil. Okay, now I'm just getting hungry talking about all this! Blessed Green Thumbing this year!

Bell peppers
cucumbers
tomatillos
beans and peas
and some jalapeño and habenero peppers.
I also grew a little patch of mint for mojitos :)

This year we are doing
Roma tomatoes
peas and beans

and we are going to try some romaine

My mother in law is going to teach me how to can the tomatoes and I am VERY excited about it.

Do you have anything in the ground yet? We got brave and started the peas and beans last week.

I don't currently have a garden, as we are in a townhome, but I can tell you what my mom used to grow in her garden when we were growing up. We had (at one time or another): lettuce, onions, chives, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, corn, green beans, zucchini (and squash I think), peas, carrots, I think oregano and/or basil, rhubarb, and maybe some more things I can't remember right now. :)

Your garden sounds lovely. I can't wait to get my hands into the dirt.

I have a very small garden. I raised cucumbers. I bought one of those wire, cone-shaped things that people put around tomato plants. A friend suggested I wind the vines around and up and it was absolutely a delight. He bought a mature farmer's market cucumber so I had cucumbers early for most of the summer.

Need to go but would love to talk more.

I am also going to use organic worm castings (sp) casings (sp?) for the first time. I heard they are incredibly rich and help make happy plants.

Compost - What kind of composter do you use? I didn't have much luck with this huge 5' high-stackable-3'squares I got from U of M. I have seen chicken wire, big black contractor garbage bags, fancy ones... My husband thinks composting is gross and not worth it.

parsley, rosemary, thyme different kinds, dill, sage, lavendar, oregano, mint, citon meliss, potatoes, garlic, tomatos, bell peppar, corn (it's worked one time), lettuce of different kinds, spinach, rocket (ruccola),rhubarb, strawberries, onions and pmpkins. phew no wonder we're so tired when summer is done. I think it's great though.

I like to grow peas, grean beans, romaine lettuce, rhubarb, raspberries, and blueberries. This year I have added wax beans and bell peppers. Oh and I guess I can't forget the corn and soybeans we grow out in the feilds. LOL But those aren't really for fun like the rest are. HA HA HA

Last year we had 2 different kinds of tomatoes, basil - purple and sweet, chives, anaheim peppers, spearmint (this one is fun for the kids!), rosemary, and cilantro.

We're kinda limited on veggies due to a small yard and bunnies. This year we made a raised bed and will try a few more veggies.

I do snap peas, (which never make it in the house), cherry tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, squash, and cukes. My strawberries have not been successful. Starbucks also provides free coffee grounds for the garden which is a good source of nitrogen for the soil.

We're doing our first garden this year (I'm really excited!)... I think we're doing cucumbers, yellow squash, a few stalks of corn (for fun for my son), carrots, salsa ingredients, green beans... I don't remember if we did anything else... Ooo - lettuce, I think.

Later in the season we're attempting watermelons, pumpkins and black-eyed peas.

Did you have any luck with your grapes? I saw a grape vine at Lowe's (of all places!), but didn't know how it would do here.
