What Do You Do for a High Temperature? Update!

Try to keep her as cool as possible. When my son had a 105 temp. they stripped him down and put cold rags on the back of his neck and on his face. I know it seems cold for them, but this really help to drop the temp. Good luck!

I agree, a cool/lukewarm bath was worked the best for us. My son spiked fevers near 103 when he was teething. We gave him Tylenol & a bath. He hated the baths, but they worked. Also, showers.

Ice packs under her arms, not exactly on the skin. Cool baths. Cover her but not with overly warm blankets. If you get no relief with all of that and the motrin, I'd call the dr again until you are satisfied! Be thinking about you

I will give her Motrin instead of Tylenol, because it usually works better. You can also give her a bath with warm (towards cool) water.

When my son had fever and it was taking long to come down, my doctor told me to alternate medicine like give him motrin now and 2 hrs later give him tylenol and then 2 hrs later motrin again and 2 hrs later tylenol.

If your daughter is not responding to medication, take her to the ER, remember that Children's Hospital has satellite offices in different parts of town for emergencies.

If your daughter temp is even close to 104, I would be taking her to the ER. Do you have someone that can take you, or watch your other child?

I would take her to the ER only because I was just talking with my son's teacher yesterday and she was telling me about her daughter having mono and her biggest symptom being the high fever, just your mommy instincts if you feel this is not normal for her take her to the ER. Hope she is ok.

I've heard that luke warm/cool bath will help with a high fever. Keep her full of the tylenol/motrin. You can give tylenol every 4 hours and motrin every six -- and you can give them both to her at the same time as long as you follow the 4/6 hour rules. If it continues not to budge, call your doctor back. Try to stay calm...she can sense your anxiety and that won't be comforting to her. Good Luck!

My 2 year old just had a 105.1 temp last week. I freaked! I stripped him down, put him in a cool/warm bath. He hated it. It hurt for me to touch him. I called the peditrician's office, and they told me to get him to drink cold liquids (water, crushed ice, popiscles), put cool compressions on him (cold washcloth on forehead), and to alternate Tylenol and Motrin. She (the nurse) said that it would take about 45 minutes for the medicine to start working. Sure enough it did....BUT after 2 hours, the fever would be right back up. Long story short, the fever would go down, but come back up. We made it through the night (with me not sleeping at all because I was watching him!). The next day, the fever got back up to 104.9. I called the peditrician's office again, they were out to lunch. SO...I took him to Urgent Care and they called it 'Tonsilitis' because he had some pus in the back of his throat. The doctor there told me to rotate the Tylenol and Mortin every 2 hours. I had always rotated the 2 medicines, but waited 4 hours in between each dosage. He said that because they were different medicines that just waiting 2 hours in between is okay. He also prescribed Amoxicillin. Next day, my son was back to normal. Good luck! I know it's a super scary thing!!

When my kids get really high fevers and I call the nurses hotline at Children's they always tell me to double up one dose of tylenol.

I can't believe your DR did not have your child come in! My sister in law is a pediatric nurse at Childrens & her husband is a paramedic/ fireman. I'm sure both, with 3 kids would disagree! Myself & both of my kids run very high temps. What works here, as you have been told by other moms, is Children's Motrin & Tylenol. The recipe is every 4 hours alternating each med. From what I know from the "medical experts" in my family, 104% is the point of danger in a child, time to get to a hospital. Hope this helps & I hope your little girl feels better! The only other thing I have tried to help bring the temperature down is a cold wash cloth on their forehead, or a cool bath. They may not want to get into a cool bath, but keeping a cool washcloth and taking Motrin have helped my son's temperature go down.
If all else fails, just call your doctor or take her to the ER.

Well to start off with, how long has your daughter had her fever, and is she having any other symptoms? A fever is the bodies natural reaction to fighting off an infection, in this case most likely a viral infection. Get her the Motrin, and put her in a lukewarm bath. Do what the doctors office said about the fluids so she doesn't get dehydrated, but other than that, the fever should break on it's own. I would definitely keep your doctors office posted, but as far as a trip to the ER, hold off on that as they aren't really able to do a whole lot more than you are. Just don't under any circumstances give her aspirin or any product with aspirin in it, as this can cause Reye's syndrome in children who have the flu.
Take a deep breath, say a little prayer, and just follow what your doctor told you.

There are lots of great suggestions, so I won't repeat...but I did want to mention that if it doesn't go away soon, she should be checked for strep throat. It causes a high temp like that and my ped said it is going around like wildfire the past couple of months....he himself was seeing 20-30 cases a day.

Thank goodness she is getting better!!!! But, usually what you are not told is if you give them Tylenol, you can give them Motrin 45 mins.-1 hr. later (visa-versa)... Then from there out you give the child something every 4 hrs.
I sometimes wait a little longer, but if that doesn't work....
Take a warm wash cloth wetting the head, then neck, and then rest it on the back (see if that works to cool the body temp., you never want anything less than warm, as you'll put their body into shock)....
If after a few hours this doesn't work or at any point they ever get worse (and you feel overly worried), take your child over to be checked....
I always say: "I'd rather be safe than sorry!!!!!!!"

I would alternate Tylenol and Motrin every three hours...

My 2 year old son had a high fever just this week. Average temp. was around 103. He's was eating well, playing well, yet he was hot to the touch, a bit on the irritable side, and wanted to drink juice all day (dehydration). We give him tylenol almost every four hours, which would make his temp go down temporary, but it would spike right back up before the next does. I called the doctor after over 24 hours of this and he informed us that he's a some sort of viral influenza that's been going around lately. He told us that we were doing all the right things and that it should go away in about 1-2 days. He said the if his temp didn't clear up in about 4 days, to bring him in. Sure enough a day later, his temp was back to normal and all was well again.

My advice: As long as your child is eating, drinking, and not localizing any sort of pain anywhere, tylenol and time should do the trick. Good luck!

My daughter did this about a year ago. It seemed like nothing was really helping it would be high for a few hours then the medicine would kick in and drop it down for a few hours this went on for almost 3 days. I ended up taking her to Childrens hospital where they got the fever down but ended up keeping us for a night and pumped her full of liquids through an IV she was dehydrated and the next morning she was fine. With a fever that high I dont know if I would try and control it myself.

What works for me -

1. Alternate IB Profin and Tylenol every four hours.
2. Cold shower or bath.
3. No blanekts and not under covers or thick pajamas.
4. Cold washcloth on the forehead and the back of the next.

Hope this helps. My daughter gets fevers between 104 - 105 every 3-4 weeks due to illness and these help her tremendously.

The nurses hotline told me to strip my daughter down to her diaper and have a light blanket handy, motrin every 4 hours, any sooner thatn that is too much, and a lukewarm bath, not cool cause it could make things worse.

A cooler bath and coolness to the forhead helps but a temp of 104 I would think the doctor would of wanted you to come in or go to a hospital.A 104 temp is not good from what I heard in the past and should get attention.

Rub her back down with alcohol. another thing is have her soak in a luke warm bath.

My daughter is having the same issue. Keep up the tylenol or the meds your using. I'm also using lukewarm baths, which is making her lower and stay around the same temp. It's gone from 103.5 down to 100.2 using the baths and the medication.

I agree with everyone telling you to alernate motrin and tylenol. That's what my ped told me when my son had a fevor of 103. You also need to watch your child. If your daughter has a high fever, but is acting fine. I would give the medicine, strip her down, give lots of fluids and rest.If she isn't acting herself at all, take her to the ER. Use your instint.I know a trip to the ER can be expensive, but if you don't feel comfortable, its worth it. Hope everything works out!

Try giving here motrin and tyleolevery four hours(alternate them. Fevers usually last 2 to 3 days but if it gets to high you can cause brain damage. If you get to scare take her to toledo hospital they have a great childrens hospital

My youngest would have febrile seizures between the ages of 18 months and 6 years old. When we were at Childrens Hospital the dr. said to give her alternating doses of childrens advil or motrin and tylenol.I think the motrin was every 8 hours and the tylenol was every 4. That was the only thing that worked on her temps. She may need to be seen. She could have strep throat or the flu. Good luck to you and I hope she feels better.

if her temp spikes again take her directly to er it is not safe for a child to have a temp that high
