Hi moms!
My second grade son loves to read but we are having trouble finding books/book series for him. It really seems alot of the series out there are geared for giras (sorry). He seems to be on his reading level (some level two books are just too easy while some level threes are still too difficult). I would love any help you guys can give; maybe even something can grow with him?

Hi C.,

My son loves the Phineas MacGuire books. I think that there are 3 of them. He also enjoys reading the Geronimo Stilton books and the Black Lagoon series such as The Teacher from the Black Lagoon (they are not scary, just really silly). The Ready Freddy series is also cute.

My son is on a 3-4 reading level in the second grade. He really enjoys Box Car Children and The Magic Tree House. He no longer likes Junie B. Jones. Too girly I think. I forget the other series that he talks about but also likes the Captain Under Pants books. I haven't really looked into those though.

The Magic Tree House books are great. It's 2 kids, a boy and a girl, who travel in time to different adventures and they have a history lesson associated with them.

My son (6, but an advanced reader) loves several mystery series--Jigsaw Jones, Cam Jansen (a girl who has a photographic memory), and Nate the Great. His favorites are the Jigsaw Jones books. They usually range from upper 2s to lower 3s. He also loves the Magic School Bus and Magic Tree House series. Hope that helps.

Hi C.,

My 2nd grader (girl) loves to read the Scooby Doo chapter books. They are a little more advanced then level 3's but he could grow into them. She has also started reading the Bailey School Kids series. They seem pretty cute. I'm trying to get her hooked on the Clue Crew - which is young Nancy Drew.
Also, there are Henry and Mudge, Nate the Great, Arthur chapter books, and Magic Tree House.
Good luck.

My son (6yrs) likes the Stink Moody books and Joe Sherlock books. He enjoys reading Flat Stanley chapter books and Milton Stinten (sp?) about a mouse and his adventures. He also like Captain Underpants, however I don't recommend them. He received one for his 6th birthday and there is a lot of potty talk. Good luck and God bless you and yours!

My second-grade son loved reading "Ricky Ricotta" books over the summer. They are probably a little on the easy side, but with lots of pictures and action, they are almost like a comic book. My son would read through them quickly and then read them again. Unfortunately, there aren't very many in the series (5 or 6, I think). The Magic Treehouse series is also good.

My son (who is 7 also) loves the book series THE SECRET OF DROON. Tony Abbot is the author. He has a website that gives info about his books.
The series is about 3 kids who find a hidden, magical city under the basement stairs.
It's like a g-rated Harry Potter series. We found them at Books A Million book store ( I am sure other bookstore chains sell them ).
As far as I know ,right now there are 32 books in the series. (We are on book 8) I read tehm to him at bedtime and we both look forward to what's going to happen next.

He might also like the A-Z mysteries by Ron Roy. From working in my children's school library here are some books that seem to be checked out a lot: Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney and Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowery (boys & girls). My kids have not read the first one, but I read the second one to my daughter's 2nd grade class last year and everyone loved it. I'll let you know if I find out anymore this week.

My son is also in 2nd grade and just turned 8. He loves the Magic Tree House books, and Half Price books always has them cheap! They have a great kids and young adult section so I am sure you will find a lot of possibilities there!

My son is 7 also, and he & my husband read the "A to Z Mystery" series books every night. (Author is Ron Roy)
I've also bought him some of the Star Wars or Bionicle books through the scholastic book orders at school, although they are a little easy I think.
Liam loves graphic novels and has read every "Tin Tin", "Owly", and "Bone" book in the library (Tin Tin books are really old so very un-politically correct, but quirky and tons of new vocabulary!) and he's just discovered Calvin and Hobbes. If you don't mind lowbrow/potty humor "Captain Underpants" series is just right for their reading level. If you think he'll like an adventure series try "Avatar". I've also noticed a series at the library called "The Magic Treehouse", but we've kept busy with others so haven't tried them out yet.
Liam read 81 books over summer vacation, so there are plenty of "boy" books out there! (and I'm hoping to see some new ideas here for us, too!)

My son loves to read but I remember reading lots of different series but when I introduced him to the Hank the Cow dog series, the whole family got involved. Everynight. My sister told me about them and how her husband and kids would listen in then she told my brother's wife and then she told me that my brother couln't wait till that evening to read more. You may can tell that my son is younger than all of theirs but they were right. Being a Texas mom I sure you'll enjoy the books too. They're written by a Texas farmer seeing things from a farm dog's perspective. Anyway since boys love dogs it goes over well. My son would laugh and laugh and so would all of us.

My eight year old step son enjoys Lemony Snicket a great deal but there are some big words in it. They cleverly explain the big words to the baby sister, however.

He also really likes Captain Underpants, which is kind of cartoon-ish and appeals to the little boy in our growing boys. I was turned off at first because they have characters like Professor Poopy Pants but it got him back to loving reading again after an awkward summer.

The library is a great resource and the librarians can offer wonderful suggestions, too.
