Weird Period...(not Strong and Only Brown/black Blood)

My husband and I have been TTC since August without success. However, we do not think I'm pregnant right now, though, it's not out of the realm of possibility...

This period started out with strong cramps and spotting like any other period. However, I have yet to get the regular fresh blood of a normal period. My period was due on the 27th, but spotting arrived on the 26th with cramps. I've had light dark sticky blood spots for the last few days, but no sign of anything else arriving. What is up? Is it possible that I am just stressed from TTC? Or is this anything to be concerned about? I just need to know what to do. I took a pregnancy test about 3 days before my period started, but it was negative.

Any advice or reassurance would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Bleeding seems to be stronger today, but still browner than normal. I don't think I could be pregnant with this much bleeding.

I would take another pregnancy test. Could be the first one was too early. Also, if you are TTC, check out Natural Family Planning Ovulation Method, which can help you determine ovulation and thus know exactly how long to wait before taking a pregnancy test. This type of bleeding can occur in pregancy, but it is possible just to have a very light period as well, with not a lot of "fresh" bleeding. If the bleeding stops within a couple days and your body returns to normal, it was probably just a light period, but if it were me, I'd take another test to rule out pregnancy. Good luck.

A few years ago I dealt with ovarian cysts and I would get occassional brown blood periods. My doctor said that brown blood is old blood. It is very likely that you are pregnant and this is just your body shedding some old blood that was probably there when you conceived. I wouldn't worry about it as brown blood is not anything to be alarmed about. Good luck and I hope you get good news soon.

I'd take another test, you very well could be pregnant! This happens a lot with pregnancy and women think they are not, only to find that it was spotting due to early pregnancy or implantation bleeding. Sometimes the tests don't show the hormone unless it's the day of your missed period or any day after. Good luck and I hope it's good news for you!

I also had the same thing happen when we were trying to conceive our second child. I had always had normal periods with no discharge beforehand but when I went off the pill to conceive our 2nd child, every period I had started off with 3 to 4 days of brown discharge. Our first child was a surprise pregnancy so I was stressed about having to try to conceive. It took 7 months to get pregnant and each month I was anxious and I think that had a lot to do with the discharge beforehand. I think if you relax and try not to get stressed out everything will be fine.

I agree. Take another test. With our daughter I was sure I was pregnant, and when I had a little bleeding I decided I must not be. We were on vacation with my very nosy in-laws so I didn't take a test. When my period only lasted a day, I attributed it to the stress of traveling with the in-laws. I finally took a test when we got home and it was positive.

Sounds similar to how my current pregnancy started. I thought I had my period - cramps and all. And when it disappeared, I figured it was just due to the stress I was under with moving at the time since I didn't have the queasiness I did with my first. A few weeks later, I took a pregnancy test... I'm now 22 weeks along!

Kari R, Did you have the spotting the month you got pregnant? I am 31 and I have been ttc for 6 months. Over the last 4 months I have noticed brown or light pink spotting 3-4 days before my period. I keep thinking it may be implantation bleeding, but every time I end up getting my real period. This month seems a little different so I still have my hopes up, but with my track record they are not too high! I have an apt with the Doctor at the end of the month. thanks!
