Hi ladies,

Im 18 weeks pregnant with #2 and am finally getting out of a difficult first trimester. Im being careful about what and how much I eat and am getting some moderate exercise when energy levels permit. Yet, Ive already gained 12 pounds! I have actually gained more at this stage then I did the first time around(in my complete joy, I threw all care to the wind and ate like food was disappearing with my first). Im trying to be more conscientious because of my age (37) and the fact I was a little overweight when I got pregnant. My OB/GYN, bless him, wont ever comment about weight and tells me Im fine. Is this gain normal? Did you experience anything like this?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much, ladies!! I cant tell you how much better you have made me feel. As odd as it sounds, I feel much more motivated to continue to watch what I eat, etc., knowing this is normal. And there is so many other wonderful things to be thinking about that are more important! Thank you again!

A.:

In between my first and second pregnacy (12 years), my metabolism did slow down, as in every woman; I ate less in the second, and was gaining more weight, I also got "gestational diabetes", so my OB and Endocrinologist gave me simple and well know advice, that you may take if you want.

1. Reduce refinated carbohidrates and subsitute them for complex carb. Everything that says in the label "enriched flour..." is bad, choice what says: Whole wheat flour...

2. Reduce your sugar intake at the minimum and instead of sugary items, eat frut.

3. When hungry, eat high protein, low or not fat snacks, also have "in hand" cut veggies.

4. Find a "walking buddy", get a pedometer and walk as much as your want.

5. Reduce any kind of stress (it makes us eat more). Try praying, meditation, laughing (watch funny videos, movies, etc.)

I too gained more weight with my 2nd pregnancy, according to all my 15 female co-workers it is normal and the weight CAN come off, but the effort is going to be 10 times harder than the first pregnancy. With my first daughter I was able to loose the weight within months. By the end of my 2nd pregnancy I had gained 30 pounds and it took me almost 2 years to loose the weight no matter how hard I tried. I doubt you'll have the same problem it seems like you are taking really good care of yourself, I wouldn't worry too much, once you see the cute little baby, the weight will be far from your mind.

Congrats on your second baby! I was so happy to welcome number two into our family and it has been wonderful! My best advice is to not stress about it. MAKE SURE YOU ARE EATING because if you don't, your body will think that it is starving and hold onto the any fat you do take in.
This is the added perk of having two kids. I was a size 12 when I got pregnant and now 9 months after giving birth to #2 I am a size 6. I don't excercise (I really should) I simply eat right and the fact that I have two kids now keeps me on my toes ALL DAY LONG! So the weight just fell off. The more you are moving (with the kids, grocery shopping, cleaning etc.) the weight just comes off. I DO breastfeed exclusively and HIGHLY recommend that. It burns soooo many calories it's insane. I eat a bunch of small healthy meals a day (if you ever want advice on what I eat I will gladly fill you in). What has happened to me doesn't happen to every mom obviously but my point is to just relax and enjoy the beautiful gift that is to come soon and know that you very well may find yourself looking incredible before you know it! :)

I, too, am pregnant with #2 and YES - you gain more! I was worried about it as well but my doctor said you just do gain more quickly and more weight than with your first baby. I guess there is not much rhyme or reason to it, but that everything has already been 'stretched out!' I didn't wear maternity clothes with my first baby until I was five months along - so I was in denial when I had to break them out at three months! I think, though, that even though you start showing earlier, you tend to 'even it out' and sort of catch up with yourself.

Just eat healthy and try to exercise (in this heat, it has been a struggle!) and you'll be fine.

Hi A.,

I think you are completely normal, and of course every person is different. But by my 20 week check-up I was at 15 pounds in weight gain and my OB said that was fine. My average weight gain should be about 30 pounds (I still laugh at that seeing as how I'm 33 weeks now and have gained 35!) and I was halfway through the pregnancy and halfway through that "allowance". But even still, he's not concerned with my weight gain.

I think you'll be fine, especially since you are exercising when you have the energy. That is something I have NOT been able to do. I suppose running around after a 2 year old is exercise enough...sigh... :-)

Well, I think this is definately normal (to gain more weight with the second child that is). I was slightly under weight when I got pregnant with both of my children so extra weight was allowed for me. With my first I gained about 40 pounds (yep 40), but with my second I was already outgrowing my clothes before I even missed a period and by the time I delivered I had gained 65 pounds! I thought I was sooooo HUGE, but my doctor was OK with every pound I put on. And he is super pleased that I kept some of the weight (although I think I kept too much of it, LOL). The funny thing too is that with my first I ate everything I could get my hands on and craved nachos and banana splits; with my second I craved salads and baked potatoes. You would think I would have gained more weight with the first considering what I ate. Anyway, hope that helps.

For me, I did great through number 1 and number 2. I started both of those pg "over weight" and acctually weight less shortly after having them then I did prior to getting pg. Then along came number 3. I started out at a PERFECT weight and balloned up like a whale!. Keep doing what you are and I am sure that things will be ok.
