Washing Machine Suggestions - HE Top Loading

We're moving, and I will need to purchase a new washer. I have been using a front loader for 12 years, and my only complaint is the clothes get all twisted and tangled. Our W/D will be in a large-ish closet, so I don't think a front loader would work well, since I always leave the door open between cycles. Does anyone have an HE top loader they love? Do they clean as well as a front loader? I've read mixed reviews.

What can I do next?

We have been happy with our HE Maytag Centennial. Purchased at Sears.

We didn't want a front loader for many reasons, some of them four footed and curious.

I love my Whirlpool Gold top loader. HOWEVER I've had it for about 12 years, and I'm sure it's not on the HE list. That's not to say that you couldn't find one now that might be.

The thing you need to keep in mind when choosing between a front loading machine versus a top loading machine is the water usage. There is a reason why front loading machines use much less water. A TOP loading machine has to fill most of the basin with water in order for the clothes to get clean. A FRONT loading machine has gravity on its side....as it spins (think of a farris wheel) the water is constantly swishing up and then gravity is bringing it back down over your clothes. This uses a lot less water than if you had to fill the entire inside.

Now, as I say this, I still prefer my top loader. My care and maintenance is practically non existent. I do keep the lid open between washes so that it doesn't smell mildewy. When I briefly lived at home with my parents right after college for a year, they had a front loader, and I HATED it. We were always having to dry out the seal around the door or it would get moldy.

Good luck with your decision!

I have a GE HE top loader that I bought when my front loader broke, and I am so much happier with it. Only thing I miss is there isn't a buzzer to let me know the load is done (it's very quiet and in the basement so I sometimes forget I put a load in) and there isn't a delay start (so I can have it run before I wake up in the morning). But I probably could have gotten those if I'd spent a little more money on it. No problems at all yet in the 3years or so that we've had it.

You don't need to leave the door all the way open on a front loader. It just doesn't need to be closed solid.
I never leave mine wide open, I just don't close the door enough for it to catch. It works.
Something to consider.
My mom has an HE top loader and I really don't care for it. My clothes don't get as clean when I've had to borrow hers on occasion. I really prefer my front loader.

My dad loves his Kenmore HE top loader. I think it's a Kenmore Elite line or something like that. I don't know about it's cleaning, just that he really likes it. I think it operates similar to a front loader--spins and does not have an agitator.

I have the same set that Rosehawk has. I love it! I originally also had a front loader but had issue after issue with it. I've had mine now for a couple years and have no issues what so ever with it.
