Hi. So we have this cute Maltese that was given to us. The previous owner said she can't take him off her insurance so she is asking if we could pay. Anyone else been in this situation? I find it hard to believe if that is true.
By the way she did give us the insurance paperwork so the dog does indeed have insurance. Saying she can't take him off just seems a little off.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We told her to speak with the insurance company because we weren't going to pay for it under her name and risk being denied of any services. Find out she never even gave it a shot. So now we are getting our own insurance for him. She made it harder than it was all because she didn't ask the correct questions from her end. Problem solved!

You can decide for yourself if you want your own health insurance policy on the dog and pay for it yourself. For all you know, she does not have any health insurance on the dog and she's just trying to get you to give her money. If she really does have insurance, all she should have to do is contact the company and tell them she no longer owns the dog. Ask her what company it is and contact them yourself.

Even if she signed a contract to get a lower rate you are not bound by it. There is also a good chance if you try to use it you will be declined. You need to call the company and get the real story.

M.:

Call the insurance company and find out if they will transfer the ownership of the policy to you.

She might owe for the rest of the year - I don't know. You will need to have her with you when you call so they can get permission to talk with you regarding the policy, payments, what is covered, etc.

Good luck!

What?? That doesn't make sense. Ask for the name of the insurance company, call them and find out the scoop.

I would willingly pay! Especially if it is a high end policy. Vet bills are a killer.

This doesn't make sense... I'd speak with the insurance company to find out why the policy can't be transferred.

If not, and you choose to pay the difference to the previous owner, then your Maltese is not "free". There's a catch.

Too many red flags for me. Why can't she take him off? If he were to die he'd be removed from the policy, so what is different? Seems like it could transfer to the new owner easily. BUT... I am not an insurance agent.
