Skype all the way. It's free and we never have any problems, we talk to friends and family both in and out of the country. We use it with both the webcam and without and never had any problems. It's def. worth it because its free. HTH

My experience with Vonage was awful. Tons of dropped calls, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE customer service. I work from home, so a dependable phone line is very important. They just couldn't provide that, and I switched everything over to Verizon and have been happy ever since.

I have Skype downloaded but I don't use it.

We use our cell phones. Family of 3. Total of 7 phone lines, HA HA why????

We have all AT&T. I recently changed all of my home lines (4) to the basic AT&T service which is roughly $25/line/month. NO features whatsoever (call waiting, caller id, etc) We have our business (forwarded to cell), fax line, regular home line, and then my daughter's teen line. After that....we all 3 have AT&T cell service with unlimited long distance, text, etc. Daughter and I do pay $40 extra a month total because we each have the Iphone.

My land lines are all 4 less than $100 a month.

AT&T does offer a "measured service" line with a limit of outgoing calls of 25 and unlimited incoming calls for $10 plus tax a month. This does not work if you have a metro number.

We wanted to hang onto our 4 numbers so this ($25/mth)was the most basic plan we could get to do that.

Time Warner had a decent deal with more features, however, they can onlu do 2 lines per home and because we have 4 it did not work for us.

Good luck

We have Vonage and have never had any problems with them; however, our price started at $24.99 and now it is up to about $32 a month, tax included.

I have no expericance with skype but know others who love it. I have had vonage and it was the worst experiance of my life! Once or twice a week we would spen up to 4 hours, the shortest time being 30 minutes, average being an hour on the phone with tech support because we would lose audio in the middle of phone calls. I hapily pay for my regular land line now.

I had vonage before. Its great! Works great! Now I have magicjack which is even better. No one can beat the price of this one now. Used to be vonage was the cheapest one for $24.95/mo, then came t-mobile for $10/mo but magicjack w/c recently juz came out early this year offers voip service for $19.95/year!!!! Yes, its true. You read it right, $19.95/YEAR of unlimited phone calls to any phone to USA & Canada. Check it out at www.magicjack.com. I've been using it for like 2 months now and the voice quality is juz crystal clear. It also has all the features... call waiting, call forwarding, three way, voicemail, plus I can carry this with me anywhere I go even outside the country. All you need is to hook this small electronic device to any computer that has highspeed internet connection and voila! Now you have a phone. :) Don't have to worry bout any phone bill til next year.

Y.,

One of my best friends and I used vonage when she was in Japan. She had it and I have unlimited long distance so it was free to talk back and forth. Loved it!

Another thing, my husband and I use Skype when he's out of the country/out of town. It's brilliant as well.

It's really a matter of preference.

I believe Vonage may be more "user friendly" as far as hooking up to an actual phone and being able to move about the house as you are talking.

We have been using Vonage since it first came out....we LOVE IT!!!!! Hadn't had any real problems. I have noticed though if you are on the phone when you are downloading a REALLY BIG email, it can sound choppy...but I mean a REALLY Big email, like the ones that take 5 minutes to download even though you have lightening speed internet cable modem connection...and that doesn't happen too often.

I was gonna recommend Magic Jack b/c I saw it on tv. I have never used it but it looks pretty simple and is cheap. THe price was 19.95 per year plus it cost 39.95 to purchase the jack. Hope that helps. One last thing, realize with either of those options, if your power goes out you will not have a phone (but that's not a problem if you have a cell phone I guess.) THe magic jack works with any high speend internet so if you have HSI through your cable provider you could totally by-pass the whole phone people. Oh and I think Magic Jack gives you a new phone number.

We switched to Vonage almost a year ago (from Verizon) and love it now. I hated it at first because we were trying to transfer our existing number to them and that process did not go well at all. I ended up calling the Corporate Compliance Hotline and filing a formal complaint for customer fraud and mistreatment. by 8am the next morning, my problem was solved and I haven't had any other problems since. Your Vonage service is only as good as your highspeed internet access. My husband and I love the voicemail feature because we can check our home voicemails from any computer (even while we're on vacation. I don't know much about skype (I have friends who talk to their college-age son who's in Europe right now with skype), but I think in order for it to work, the person calling you also has to have skype. With Vonage, it works just like traditional phone service, so anyone can call me, regardless of who their carrier is. Vonage's customer service is awful - the call center is somewhere overseas and their English skills are less than ideal. They often read from a script and don't really answer your question correctly.
