My son HATES pedialite, but LOVES Gerber Liquilites. You can still find them in powdered mix with water form, I used to be able to get little 8oz bottles, but have not seen them in a while.
I'm feeling a bit slow as I wish I could figure out how to search on this site and/or locate the archives as someone mentioned in the past as I am SURE this is a topic that has been covered before. Anyway...
My son who is 13.5 months old woke up vomiting at 5:00 a.m. this morning and continues to vomit following anytime he consumes a small amount of liquid or food - and yes, we know to keep the amounts small. His dad is about to run out and purchase some Pedialyte as his pediatrician recommended Gatorade in the past if he won't take Pedialyte - can you say sugar?!? Anyway, I know this too shall pass after many loads of laundry and baths but DO YOU HAVE ANY HOME REMEDIES YOU WOULD RECOMMENDED for a child around one year?
By the way, I am aware of when I should be concerned regarding the vomiting (e.g. the signs of other illnesses or dehydration so I don't really need advice on those topics.)
-Stinky and appreciating this community :)

BRAT--- Banannas Rice Apples Toast. That is what my pediatrician has always said to me. I remember her telling my mother when I was little, and telling me as my children are growing. (I have a 10 and 2 year old).
It has always worked for me when trying to get SOMETHING to stay down.
Good Luck
One thing that always works for my children when they are vomiting is a little cola syrup over crushed ice. You can find the cola syrup in most drug stores. It works wonders for my children.
Alisha, the website www.SevenStarLife.com has information that may help your child.

There are some herbal teas that help with tummy issues.
Various mint teas can be helpful, and so can ginger tea. Chamomile is also a relaxant and can help him get some rest too. You probably want to water them down a bit and make sure they're the temperature he wants them at. I found my daughter actually likes her soothing teas a bit on the warm side (it probably feels good when it hits the tummy).
Sorry about your baby's illness, it is SO rough on everyone when they're sick!
Don't worry about his sugar intake right now while he is sick. When people are vomiting in the hospital & are becoming dehydrated they are given glucose, which is basically sugar water. Both the pedialyte and the gatorade contain glucose. If he doesn't like the taste of these, my pediatrician (who is usually very anti-sugar) has recommended offering popcicles as a another way to give fluids. I hope your lil' guy feels better soon...:)
My son has been through this so many times in the past year, we feel like the puking toddler pros now! Our ped recommended waiting until the vomiting has slowed down and there isn't much coming up and then try a few small sips of a liquid. Water isn't really great, but I'm sure you know that. If they can keep that down for an hour, try a few more sips...if it comes back up, wait 30 or 45 minutes and try again. Once they've kept liquids down for a few hours and are acting hungry again, try easy foods like crackers or bananas. Seriously, my son went for about four months puking every three weeks, so we've been through this a lot!
Alisha,
I don't have any home remedies for you, just wanted to mention Propel as an alternative. My 13, almost 14 month old seems to like the taste of propel better than water.
Hope your little guy gets better soon. Puking babies are the worst because the don't know why this stuff is coming out of their mouth or why it tastes so bad.
Blessings and Healings,
Melissa
One more thing I didn't see mentioned is Gripe Water. You may have heard of it for colic, but it's fennel and ginger and does seem to sooth the tummy, once the vomiting is over, of course. So hard to just let the virus run it's course and not be able to help him feel much better, but it will pass. :( Good Luck.
A cool washcloth on the forehead really does help ease the nausea. Also, popsicles and jello are really easy on the tummy once they can hold water down for a few hours.
This is a recipe that my pediatrician gave me for homemade pedialyte. You can substitute the sugar for honey, and there are no artificial colorings, and it still restores the electrolytes lost from dehydration. I would also recomend doing the ginger tea that someone mentioned doing in your coffee pot, and use that as the water.
Rehydration Formula:
1 liter water
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. sugar or honey
Mix well. Infants and toddlers-5-15cc (1-3tsp.) at least twice per hour.
Adults/teens- sip on continuously
dehydration: there is a product called Refresh I drink it like crazy when I am getting dehydrated it is mainly juice and hibiscus tea (at least the fruit punch version is) with some salt to help the body retain the fluid no added sugar. They also have orange, lemonade and one other one that I can't remember. For my kids when they are vomiting I use chamomile, ginger and mint. Those seem to work the best for us.
I just went through this. What we ended up doing was very time consuming, but effective. We used half gatorade and half water (as per ER dr. guidelines) and used a syringe to feed her 1 ML every 1-2 minutes. If he can keep that down increase amount. If he throws up, you need to allow time for his tummy to settle before trying again. Hope this helps!
Have you ever tasted Pedialyte? It's nasty... I always water it down, and it tastes much better that way. I've also bought the Gatorate alternatives in the natural food section (made with real sugar and not high-fructose manufactured stuff.) Either way, I mix half and half with water. Healthy wishes!
Good Morning,
Ginger is the best for nausea. Just clean your coffee pot really well, throw two chamomile tea bags in the filter. You can buy fresh ginger at the grocery store, usually it is kept by the mushrooms. Slice it paper thin, about 4 or 5 slices, put it under the tea bags. Run about 6 cups of water through the coffee pot. Since he is so young put it in his bottle and add enough water to cool it down. You can add honey if he dosn't like the taste, but since he is actually vommiting, I would try it without first.
This will work wonders. It is the best for morning sickness too. My daughters are 14 & 16 now and I have used tis alot. Sometimes I add fresh chamomile and mint and when they are on their periods we add red raspberry leaves which is a natural dieretic. Good luck and blessings, Annie G.
Try a 1/2 ounce of aloe vera juice in other juice or water. Also diluted ginger tea is good for upset tummies.
We have found that small sips of lemonade does the trick. Somone told me about this years ago and I have yet to find anyone that disagrees after trying it. Have the little one take a sip about every 15 minutes. Don't let em drink a lot at first.. gradually let em have more. I hope this helps :-) I know when my grandson starts throwing up the first thing he says is "lemonade" cuz he knows it will fix it.
I don't like the salt in Gstorade so I use Propel. My 3 year old also won't touch Pedialyte either. she will drink some of the natural gingerale you can get in the natural setion of the store or Fred Myer. Ginger setles the stomach. I also would get a 2nd opion from another doctor. It never hurts...When my daughter is sick I always put a towel under her sheet where she sleeps on top of her bed pad, this keeps her bed pad clean and you from having to change it in hte middle of hte night. Good luck, C.
Try some ginger tea... it does not have to be hot. Just try a teaspoon at a time. They also make "seabands" for kids - it uses reflexology / pressure point on the wrist to relieve nausea. Also - jello and icepops count as clear liquids, if he's being picky about what he wants! When he can hold that down, you can move on to pudding and ice cream (also considered liquids!). Good luck
I don't know if any of the local stores have this stuff, but Gerber's LiquiLytes is MUCH better tasting that Pedialyte. I know you don't want a lot of sugar, but it's only for a day or two, and your kid needs hydrating. You might be able to get it at Walgreen's or Rite Aid.
Good Luck!
Ematrol is an over the counter syrup you can give him. Doulble check with the DR./Pharmacist about dosage. My son once had the same issue and would seem fine for a day and I would go back to milk/formula, then back came the vomit. I was told to keep him off All Dairy for 1 week to 10 days, as it was somthing in the milk/formula that was triggering the vomitting. Maybe that will help.
I also give my son Propel when he gets sick. It has much less sugar than Gatorade and it tastes better than Pedialyte. I often will mix the Propel with 50% sparkling water, which my son loves.
HI,
I know you have gotten many great ideas already, but I just wanted to let you know that my son who is about 11 months had the same thing for about 10 days. He started with not wanting to eat much and then when he did eat he threw up as soon as something was in his mouth. I think its like a stomach flu. My brother and my mother had the same thing last week and they were so miserable so you can image how a little one must feel. My son also go diarrhea after the 2nd day, so I too was washing tons of clothing daily. Like I said it lasted for about 10 days so all I did was give him pedialite and he took his formula just fine also saltine crackers when he was able to take something solid. But mostly I just had to be patient and ride it out the important think is that he does not get dehydrated. Another thing that was frustrating was the fact that for one day he would be ok and then all the sudden he would throw up again. Anyway hope its over soon I know how hard it is.
I would tell you get ginger and cut it up and boil it in a pot of water. Strain it and put the liquid in the sippy cup. Mint tea is good. Make sure you get caffeine free teas. (DECAF) Have you tried sprite with two or three ice cubes in a sippy cup or giner ale? Some people like the cooling affect and carbonation in their stomache or the warm calming remdies. Gatorade and the pediatlyte is good but also make sure he gets water too and don't give him anything dairy for awhile because the mixture might make it worst. I would say don't give dairy for 24 to 48 hours.
