Viral Examtham in a Two Year Old

I recently took my 2 year old to the ER with an awful rash and high fever. She had just finished her 10 days on amoxicillan because of strep throat when the rash and fever started. The ER doctor said it was viral examtham and prescribed her steriods to take for the next three days. We are on day 3 of this rash and it does not seem to be getting any better. Everything I've read about Roseola said that the rash shouldn't be itchy but my little girl is very uncomfortable and is in pain with it. What I can do to make her more comfortable besides oatmeal baths, hydrocortizone cream, benedryl and mortrin? Also, how long will this last?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I took her back to the doctor yesterday Morning and he said the same thing all of you said. He thinks she is allergic to amoxicillin. He also said it was puzzling because it had been in her system for so long. He also looked in her ears and found infection in both! That was were the high fever was coming from! The ER did not even tell me when they looked in her ears on Saturday. Her Dr. prescribed her a new antibiotic to kill the ear infection. Her rash seems to not be as itchy today, so hopefully there is a light at the end of all of this mess. Thank you all again so much, you've been very helpful.

This happened to my son also with amoxicillan... He was on his 10th day & broke out in a Terrible rash (No fever)... Took him to ER & they said he was Allergic to the amoxicillan!! I was shocked because he had been on the med for 10 days!! They said sometimes it takes that long to get into your system & cause a reaction.... They told me to give him benadryl & within 2 days the rash was gone...Maybe your baby has had an allergic reaction & your pediatrican may recommend another approach.. Blessings to you!! Aveeno cream is also wonderful!

My daughter was on amoxicillan for an ear infection about a year ago and the same thing happened. The day after finishing the antibiotic she got the rash and the pediatrician said it looked like a food allergy. By the next day she was bruising over the rash and her legs were swelling, then a different Dr at the same office said it was serum sickness, which is basically a allergic reaction to the antibiotic she was on. She was put on a steroid and strong antihistamine. So no more penicillan based antibiotic for her. Glad your ped. was able to diagnose it sooner for you. Rash went away in about a week. Good luck!

It is probably a delayed reaction to amoxil. It happened to my nephew on the 11th day of 10 day Amoxil so he can no longer take any of the cillian family drugs. After she gets better, take he back and get a strep test again. MAke sure they get behind the uvula and swipe at least one tonsil. Make sure they send it to the lab. Please take this seriously because there is a condition known as PANDAS when strep is still hiding out in the system with no symptoms except behaviors that come on suddenly from strep A. Oh, and get her on probiotics right away to deal with the effects of antibiotics! I'm also a big believer in NAET treatment because this allergy will lead to many food allergies! Check it out.

The drugs are making the child toxic! I'd get her on probiotics and a low dose of MMS (miracle mineral supplement) which most M.D.s are clueless about. Oatmeal baths are good, also sea salt baths and pure aloe vera can help her skin.

I agree. It sounds NOTHING like Roseola, but more like an allergic reaction. I had a couple when I was a kid and that's what happened to me. Benadryl worked great for it. I would ask a doctor about dosing mixing it with steroids that are in her system. That ER doc sounds like he did not know what on earth he was talking about.

It's probably not roseola. My daughter got roseola following a diarrheal infection. She had a very high fever for 3-4 days. The fever got better in the morning , and she was covered in a rash by the evening. The rash didn't seem to bother her a bit and went away completely within 48 hours.

Examtham just means that she had a rash. I guess they didn't know what was causing it. Be careful with hydrocortizone, and don't use it without instructions from her doctor. It's also a steroid.

I would take her back to the doc. Roseola shouldn't be itchy and it shouldn't last this long.
