I have had my second hand oreck since 1997 and in fact I'm heading there today to trade it in for a new one. I have flooring on the first floor and both carpet and flooring upstairs and it makes the transition without issue.
Ok... I HATE HATE HATE to sweep... I also hate carpet. Problemo!
We have one large rug in our living room, but the rest of the house is hardwood floors. Any advice on a lightweight or "stick" vacuum that can handle both, you wise moms? Also, know of one that you particularly like for stairs?

Lowes stores have some great products that are not vacums-they are microfiber heads for dusters---they pick up everything in their paths and then all you need to do is shake out the stuff or some of them are machine washable-I love those-just throw it in and let the machine do that clean up. Be careful not to scratch your wood fllors with any vacum-that can cause you trouble in the future with your finsh.
I think a canister vacuum is better for hard floors.
Go to Steve Blacks Vacuum in Plano or give him a call. We have bought several vacuums there and he is very helpful when it comes to picking out a vacuum that will fit your needs.
Have you tried an Oreck vacuum cleaner?

Oreks are great for this!
right there with ya sister! We have a little hoover and my parents have a yellow Shark. It is battery operated, and it charges from the wall outlet. I like it, but i use it 3x a day b/c of 2 toddlers and a dog! We also have the other product from Lowes that is a broom type thing but it picks up the stuff onto it. I do like it. The system we got begins w/ a B i think...there is a wet AND dry one...so that is kind of nice.
We have all hardwood and ceramic floors in our house. We use the rainbow vacuum. We vacuum our floors, rugs, and do all of our dusting with it. They are very expensive but in my opinion worth the money.
The iRobot Roomba has been the best thing since sleeping in for me! We have 4 dogs, 2 cats and people tracking dirt onto our hardwood floors. All I have to do is press the button before I leave in the morning and it runs through at least 4 rooms in the house.
I hate to sweep too! We have a lightweight Royal brand vacuum that we use on our hardwood floors.
