We have a beach vacation planned for Gulf Shores, AL but it looks like we might have to cancel that. So, I need to come up with a back-up plan for this summer. Does anyone have suggestions on where to go with an 8 year old and 5 year old that's within driving distance from Dallas (will drive up to 14 hours somewhere)?? We did Seaworld 2 years ago so we'd like to try something different.

TIA!

What can I do next?

have you thought about doing a close to home vacation? Perhaps y'all could rent a hotel in Arlington and go to Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, take in a Ranger game, and maybe go to the Fort Worth Zoo and the Science Place Museum. Those vacations are always the best because the drive isn't too far from home, yet you're still staying in a hotel and getting to take in the local attractions! I hope that y'all have a wonderful vacation! :-)

We're going to Destin, Florida this summer. It's a 12 hour drive from Mansfield (south of DFW). We have often gone to Galveston (5 hours), and also to Lake Murray, Oklahoma (2 or 3 hours). Have fun wherever you go!

If you still want a beach vacation - what about Port Aransas ? About an 8 hour drive (I think :) from the DFW area.

What about going to Schiltterbahn in New Braunsfel? http://www.schlitterbahn.com/nb/ It's made several lists for the best waterpark in America. If you've never been - it's simply amazing. You'll definitely want a few days. Get a nice hotel or rental and enjoy!

Their website is advertising 20% off ticket prices right now too. :)

We are planning to do Galveston, hopefully the oil spill wont go there, if so then we won't. You could do some caves, I think they are out by san antonio. Schillterbuan, worlds largest water park, new braunfels and galveston.

Take them to Austin. You can take them to visit the capitol. Barton Springs is also a really neat place to take them swimming. If you guys like to camp, there is Emma Long Metropolitan Park. I took my 9 yr old to Austin last summer and she loved it. It can be a very inexpensive vacation.
