UTI In Toddlers

Why have they advised against the VCUG? It may give some insight as to why he is having recurrent urinary issues. Ask for a referral to a pediatric urologist to get better answers.

My daughter is 3 and prone to UTI's. She has been since she was 6 months old. We tried cranberry juice (not easy in an infant) and various non-medical treatments. We also did 2 ultrasounds that were normal before we were referred for a VCUG. She was diagnosed with Grade 3 urinary reflux and is being treated appropriately now. Recurrent urinary tract infections can lead to kidney infections, disease, and possible failure. I would get a referral to a urologist and see what they think. An ultrasound is a good picture of the kidneys and bladder but does nothing to show reflux.

One cause of a UTI is from bath's.
Do you give your son a bath or a shower?
Maybe from swimming in a pool.

Or

Since your son is 1, I'm sure he is in diapers.
Make sure that when he goes #2 you change him quickly
so that the feces doesn't get on his privates. If he gets feces on his privates and it enters into the body then that can cause a UTI.

A week ago I had a UTI, I tried to flush my system with cranberry juice and water.
Well it didn't work and it went from a UTI to a kidney infection. Needless to say I have been in so much pain. I almost went to ER.
One of my doctors helped me and gave me the right medicine.
Now I'm doing better.

What I'm trying to say is, please be careful with UTI's.
They can get real serious real fast.

I am very confused as to why your doctor is not taking this a little more seriously ! UTI's in boys are not common. You need a referral to a pediatric urologist NOW. 3 UTI's in a year is way way too many. There are several things that could be causing this from reflux to a blockage. Get the referral and into a specialist as soon as you can. If your doctor refuses to give you one, find another doctor who will !

Have to agree with previous poster. Ask for a referral to a pediatric urologist. My daughter had a UTI for the first time when she was 2. The pediatrician sent us for an ultrasound (normal) and then decided to follow up with a VCUG (which is invasive) that showed my daughter had kidney reflux in both kidneys. They put her on an antibiotic and she was tested (VCUG) every year until it fixed itself (which it will over time). She was lucky and her kidney reflux was gone by the time she turned 4.
