Unscented Diapers

My 9 month old daughter has a rash in her diaper area that I cannot seem to clear up. I've tried Desitin, Butt Paste, A&D, Resinol, you name it. She went to the doctor today & said it was not a yeast type infection but more of an irritation from the scent in her diapers. That in combination with her urine is making her irritated. He prescribed a cream & told me to get the generic brand of diapers because they have less perfume in them. Does anyone know of any other type of unscented diaper? I have never had good luck with the generic diapers. They always seem to leak but I will do whatever to help clear this up. It looks so uncomfortable :( Thank you!

Huggies are unscented and aren't the cheap kind so they won't leak. Try those. :)I saw that someone told you to use Pampers. Those are scented , they smell like baby powder.

Try using cloth diapers and washing them in Dreft or another detergent specifically for babies. Also if at all possible give her some diaperless time when changing her.

My daughter had sort of the same problem. I recommend cloth diapers. Are you sure it's not a yeast infection? Sometimes the babys urine doesn't mix well wtih the diaper and it's sent. I use to use lotrimin, just a little. See if that works. She use to get a rash, which wold increase with warmth of the diaper.
Good luck, the mother of two

I cannot use generic diapers either but i will say for rashes i bought this spray called Rash Mist it has oatmeal in it and cleared up anything and then another kid at his daycare had really bad rashes and we used it on him and it worked as well. i get it at walmart when i can find it but you can also google rash mist and it should come up online it is only 5 dollars with shipping and just the best thing, maybe worth a shot before changing diapers

My daughter had a rash that no amount of cream would take care of because of the moisture. I used a lot of baby powder (cornstarch) and it cleared it right up. It's better than using diapers that (I agree!) don't do their intended job very well.

My sister uses Seventh Generation Baby: http://www.seventhgeneration.com/Natural-Baby.
They are chlorine, fragrance and latex free. Hopefully that will help. When my daughter would get a bad diaper rash, I would leave the diaper off a while to air out the area. Good luck, C.

Both of my daughters have very sensetive skin (like me). Have you tried Luvs diapers? Do you use hypoallergenic wipes? Target brand is good. Do you use plain baby wash for bath time? Its time consuming for a working mom (I work and commute), but really make an effort to take a bath every night. The Pediatrician tells mr 3x per week is good, but our skin is just too sensetive. Also, try letting your daughter run around bottomless for at least 15 minutes after each changing, whenever possible (I know its not always possible at the sitter). The hair dryer blowing on her butt for a few minutes is good too, as long as you make sure its not too hot. Believe me...I know its a battle. I broke out in hives on my first date with my husband because he had just washed his clothes in Tied Detergent, then hugged me!! Both of my girls are just like me.
Good Luck!

Hi J.,

I have used Nature Babycare diapers that are unscented and they are wonderful!!!! You can get them at diapers.com. They are also great because they have no plastic in them so they are biodegradable!!! They are just as comfy as the regular disposable and are great at preventing leaks. They end up costing about 2 cents per diaper more than pampers but are totally worth it!!! My 4 month old had yet to have a diaper rash from them!

Hope this helps!

I would switch to cloth diapers, since they do not have scent and they do not cause diaper rash. My daughter used them for 2 years and never had diaper rash.

You can get a service that delivers them and cleans them, or buy a couple dozen at a baby store or on Ebay and wash them yourself. Then you put a cover over to keep them in place. Easy, either way.

Email me if you'd like more specific info about cloth diapers...

The best diapers for us are seventh generation and whole foods brand 365, they are both non-chlorine and unscented. My son was always a rash baby. Also with babies it is pertenent that they get aired out(no diaper on!) every day for at least 10-20 minutes. This will prevent diaper rash. No ointment worked for us, just a little baby vaseline. This keeps the pee off the skin and keeps their skin soft. It acts as a barrier. I hope this helps, i feel your pain! Let me know if it helps.

Cloth diapers if you can stand it will really help. Also, take off all diapers and let your baby play naked in the sun for a bit every day--that will really help (but not too long if it's the middle of the day, babies sunburn quickly). And if you can stand it, let her play naked around the house too, for a bit. I use cloth diapers and my baby rarely gets diaper rash, except when a tooth is coming out, then I just put on a bit of a zinc-based cream (I use one by Weleda that you can get at Whole Foods, Elephant pharmacy or the Berkeley Bowl) and the rash is gone by the next day. Good luck!

You may want to try the brand called "Seventh Generation". They are "organic" so to speak, and have no bleach or scent in them. My daughter has been using them since the beginning and has never had a problem in the entire 7.5 months she has used them. They are sometimes available at Raley's/Belair or at Nugget. I don't think they have them at Safeway, and I don't have a Savemart nearby so I don't know if they are available there either. I'm sure any one of the places can get them for you though.

Good luck!

Costco Kirkland brand diapers - they are of excellent quality, and of course, cost effective because you buy them in such a huge box! They are "generic" as in not name brand - and I don't know a single mom friend that doesn't use the kirkland brand baby wipes from costco. They are unscented, have no chlorine or alcohol, and are really good and absorbant - they also come in a packaging (it's a soft plastic "wipee refill" sort of holder, but with a hard, snap shut closure at the top so that there is no drying out and no liquid leakage) that allows you to take them right out of the box and pop them into the glove compartment of the car, your purse, the diaper bag, whatever.
I've tried every brand of diaper out there, and I still like kirkland the best for diapers and wipes - and neither have any fragrance whatsoever. I've also noticed that they hold a nights worth of urine without leaking OR leaving those little gel crystals all over her. Speaking of urine, I have known many a child in my career that has had diaper rash because of the acidity of their urine. Make sure your daughter is drinking enough water - not juice, or milk, water. Her urine should not have a strong scent or bright color, and if it does, she isn't getting enough fluid - some children have very acidic urine regardless of fluid intake, and if you feel that this might be the case, suggest it to the ped and see what she says. There are vitamins/suppliments that can be safely given to small children to balance the acidity of their urine.

I had the same problem with my baby girl. I went from pampers to huggies because the inside of the diaper was softer to the touch and huggies is more absorbent than pampers so my baby stayed dryer. And i tried all kinds of creams too....my mom bought this bottle of water called "Penta water" (you can find it at Raley's in the health food section. Penta water reduces inflammation from burns and rashes. i put the water into a little travel spray bottle and I just give her a couple of sprays before I put the diaper on. she hardly ever gets a rash now. when she teethes she gets a little rash but the penta water takes it away with in a day.

Hi J.,
As a mother I feel exactly how you feel. Based on my experience cheaper diapers tend to irritate baby's skin. I only used Huggies though once in a while my baby still got rushes. In my observation he got rushes if i procrastinate changing his diaper. So if that happens I used my Melaleuca gel, and or Melaleuca oil and it clears up. Melaleuca is my business. I am sharing my experience not to convince you to buy my product but if you are desperate and nothing happens, you are welcome to give Melaleuca products a try. Prior to Melaleuca, just like you, I also buy all those same stuff as you do. I am glad I found Melaleuca.

Good luck on your search for the best comfort for your baby.

My son, now 14 months old, has had diaper rash on and off since he was just a week or two old. No matter what I did at the beginning, I just couldn't seem to get rid of it. He was so raw, the skin was just coming off! So, his skin still gets irritated, but I have learned a few things:
1. In addition to using Desitin (from the jar) with every diaper change, we were tipped off to a medical product called Ilex. It is difficult to find, and you may need to order it on the internet. Basically, hospitals use it in wound dressings, and it protects from absolutely everything. You use Vaseline on top of it, so pick some of that up too.
2. Try cloth diapers. We have found that our son's skin has been much healthier in these, in addition to being so much better for the environment. They are a bit more work, even with a diaper service, but for us well worth it.
3. The person who said Costco brand is absolutely right. I was so concerned about the diapers and the creams that I never thought about the wipes. At my previous day care they recommended I switch to Kirkland, and the results were almost immediately noticeable!

Good luck!

I use cloth diapers. They are really not that hard & aren't as scary as people think. The kind I use are just as fast to put on as disposables. They are called Bumgenius. You can find them in a few stores but the company is online at http://www.cottonbabies.com . I wash them myself, every couple days. With all the laundry I have, one load is no big deal. I would encourage you to at least check them out, I think you will be surprised how "high-tech" the cloth diapers are now. Also keep in mind that there is a big re-sale market for cloth diapers so the initial cost is so worth it.
Good Luck!!

Just wanted to add: You can use washcloths for wipes.

whoa, 72 responses!!! I'm not gonna read them all and I hope you aren't too overwhelmed! ;-) It's been a while since my son's been in diapers but I loved Costco's brand (Kirkland) diapers and swear by their wipes (still use them!! for on hand wipes, in the car, on the go, messy hands and other messes, etc. Non alcohol, very gentle, cloth (but disposable!) and all that good stuff.
Of course, it could still irritate if your daughter's really sensitive but I do think it is less irritating and more gentle than other stuff out there.

You might want to do something "more drastic" (or in other words, more expensive & not as convenient) for a while until your daughter's skin is good and cleared up, and she's had a chance to grow a little bit. Then in a few months or so try the Kirtland brand. (Disadvantage is the membership fee and you buy a box of like 144 or so (for $30 I think, been a long time heh)so if the first 10 give you problems, you've still got a lot left. Try and find someone to get it for you or split it with you if you dont have a costco membership)

It may be that she is also getting too much acid in her diet - ie, orange juice *always* chapped me (around my face as a girl, and on my other set of cheeks as a baby) so that's something to consider. As babies get older, they urinate a little less frequently (and more at once) so changing them often so the diaper isn't staying on her won't be as big of a task. Do try to change promptly when she wets (which I assume you do)

I still get chapped now and then, and I love to use Neosporin (generic equivalent works fine), I feel I heal much faster whenever using that. That's another thing to try maybe, if you haven't already.

Huggies & Luvs really bothered my son's skin & he got my Welsh/Irish super sensitive skin in spite of his Moroccan Daddy. Go figure! A 75 yr. old granny told me " Honey - go get some Vaseline & put it on him every time you change his diaper!" She was right - along with changing diapers every 90 minutes. To save a little on the extra diapers,
I got my diapers from
Amazon.com & signed up for "Subscribe & Save" & got them delivered every month for much cheaper, no tax & no shipping because my order was above the minimum amount. It was fabulous to come home from work & have 2 big boxes of diapers on my porch - we never had to run to Safeway & pay $13 for 18 diapers again.

I can't believe how many times I have responded lately. But here I go again. In my years of child care, I have had babies with many allergies. So with one in particular whose allergies tended to affect her bottom, I went and bought cloth diapers. I know from comparison that even a diaper service is less expensive than buying paper diapers. They are washed in such hot water that they are germ free and I never detected any perfume odor. With the baby wrap type diaper covers, even my husband who was arthritic, could easily change the baby. No diaper pins, so no fear of jabbing the baby as we did when my own children were little. And I was convinced that cloth was more comfortable. On the down side, they don't hold as much liquid as paper diapers. Therefore you need to change more often. But with a baby with sensitive skin, that is needed anyhow.
Good Luck. Enjoy your baby while she is small, they grow up all too soon.

My daughter recently had a red bum as well, it was because it stayed to moist, even after changing her. So I started leaving the clean diaper off for a few min and letting her air dry, or you can fan her area with your hand or diaper to make sure it's dry before putting the new one on, it was better in a couple of days.

Hi-

We are battling persistent diaper rash too. For our son, it seems to be related to teething. When the gums are softening and he's drooling a lot, the diaper rash is much worse. I thought I was a terrible mommy until we had a month with no teething and the rash disapeared completely (for the first time since birth!!!)!!!

In terms of disposable diapers, I love the Costco brand diapers. High quality, low fragrance. Also, consider cloth diapers- with TinyTot's diaper service. It's super easy and absolutely no fragrance!

In terms of creams/ointments, we A&D ointment for daily protection, and use Balmex cream when it's angry rash.

Good luck!
Erika

PS- I want to second the Diaper-free time. With summer here- it's perfect times for open ventilation. We try to spend at least 1/2 hour without diaper per day.

My daughter had a reaction to papmers and huggies(not sure if it was the perfume or latex) so I tried many different options. The diapers I've been most happy with are Seventh Generation diapers. I also liked Tushies but found they didn't hold up as well. Seventh Generation can be bought at Nob Hill, Babies R Us, Whole Foods... you can even order online from Amazon - free shipping and the super saver discount makes them about the same price as other diapers.
Good Luck!

For diaper rash, use a hair dryer on the lowest setting before using cornstarch and cream. I used only diaper creams without petroleum b/c it doesn't allow for the skin to breathe. I use A&D diaper rash cream (blue and yellow writing on the box) even though my daughter doesn't have diaper rash. Every time I see a little rash coming, I blow dry her bottom and add cornstarch and then cream. The next few times I change her, I notice the rash fading. If the dryer doesn't work, I would check on the foods your baby is eating. Sometimes fruits can be too acidic and can irritate. Also, I use huggies natural care wipes without fragrance or alcohol. You can get those at Target. As for diapers, we've always got Huggies in bulk at Costco and she's never had a problem. My first daughter, we used cloth and she was always with a rash. She had food allergies which caused the rash, but it wasn't able to heal until we switched to disposable diapers where her skin wasn't in contact with wetness/moisture. Hope your baby's bottom heals soon! Good luck!

My daughter had a diaper rash for the first 6 months of her life...No butt cremes helped either. The only way I got it cleared up was to soak her bottom in BAKING SODA and water. I would apply Desitin at every diaper change for a barrier. I've passed this along to friends and family and it has worked for them too. You are a busy woman but I would try to soak her bottom at least in the morning and at night. Good luck.

Go to Diapers.com. You can get Seventh Generation and Nature Babycare (unscented and biodegradable) cheaper if you buy them 4 packs at a time. Also, Weleda has a really good Diaper cream with Calendula that helps. With my son, not eating things like Oranges and Strawberries also makes a big difference.

Good luck.

We have had the same issue. I went to a brand called Nature Babycare that I get on diapers.com. We LOVE them!! They are biodegradable (great for the environment) and they don't contain plastics, gels or fragrance. My son has had NO rashes since I switched. I haven't even had a red spot. I use them all night and they haven't leaked yet!

I don't know much about scented vs unscented diapers, but I have always used Pampers Swadlers and unscented wipes. I buy all my diapers at Babies R Us or Diapers.com because they carry the Swadlers up to a size 2-3 which is ok for up to about 22-23 lbs.

About the rash...I have always used udder ointment...yes it is for cows, but it works wonders on my daughters rear! I tell everyone about it. You can purchase it at Wal-Mart in the pet supply department. It comes in a little green tin can and it works AWESOME! If you dab a little on usually the redness is cleared up by the next diaper change!

Hopes this helps!

One of my son's had the same problem. Continue using Desitin and a smedge of Anit-fungal cream and it should disappear in two days. My son's Derm. Doctor told me to do that. Hi J.,

My now 2-year-old grand-daughter had the same problem when she was about 4-months old. She had gotten a terrible rash that would not go away with anything. The first time she was treated by her doctor, it was for yeast. However the rash kept returning and was not yeast based after that. We found out later that it too was her diapers. Turned out she was allergic to the brand we were using. We tried Wal-Mart White Cloud brand. I think it is their version of generic. She has had no problems since. Anyway I just checked what I have in the closet and they do not say unscented, however I did smell them and they do not smell like perfume. The package also says "hypo-allergenic liner." They have been a good quality diaper for us. They have not leaked and have been successful with our baby girl.

I don't know if this helps you or not. Just a thought. I really hope you find something that works for you and healing for your daughter.

Sincerely,

B.~

I read some of the other posts, and we can get them at a few places...Whole Foods (most expensive), Babies R Us is probably the least expensive, Elephant Pharmacy (in the bay area, also, get 10% off on Mondays for Parents day), and there are a couple of grocery stores that have it also. they are more expensive, but are worth it!

Hi. I have 8 kids and swear by a powder called Caldesene (sp?) powder. You can only get it at Riteaid, Raley's, Walgreen's and places like that. Walmart and Target do not carry it. It has taken care of every rash my kids have ever had. Your baby may be allergic to the specific brand of diaper, one of mine couldn't use Huggies. Also I saw a biodegradable diaper on craiglist called gdiapers. They are completely natural with no perfume or anything. the website is gdiapers.com check them out.

I use a combo of cloth & disposable. The thing with the cloth diapers is you have to be very diligent about changing them as soon as baby wets. My son never gets a rash with a disposable, but when he is with his GPs and using cloth, he always comes home with a rash b/c they don't change him often enough.

The good thing is that you know when a cloth diaper is wet. With the disposables it is soo hard to tell if they are wet.

Anyway, we use Tiny Tots Diaper Service and they are very nice to work with. They will deliver anything from their store to you if you just call and ask, then they add it to your bill. Super easy!

Good luck!

I had great luck using Huggies! The scent of the Pampers makes me neauseated. I think the kind I used was one of the higher quality lines of Huggies (cannot exactly remember the name), but it specificially said "unscented" on the box.

Regarding the rash, my 3.5 year old had the same thing for an extended period of time. What seems to have gotten rid of it is adding Arm and Hammer Baking Soda into the bath. I checked with the pediatrician, who said it was just fine. I liked the idea of using something that was not terribly artificial or chemically. Another thing I use like crazy is an over-the-counter ointment called Aquaphor. It is like Vaseline, but MUCH better at providing a barrier to moisture. And very easy to wipe off, unlike Desitin or other "pastes". My daughter's rash always got worse after I tried scraping those thick, sticky pastes off at changing time. Hope this info. is helpful - Much luck to you in getting rid of the rash!

Dear J.,
I found out the hard way, very early on, that my little daughter could not wear disposable diapers of any kind. (My son never had a problem with it though). I had to use cloth diapers on her. Another thing I started doing with her very early on, was putting cloth training panties on her during the day. They were so much easier to deal with than the diapers...and no pins! I usually waited for her to have her BM and then I would let her air out and put the panties on her.
Even though my son never had an allergy to disposables, I aired him out and put the training pants on him too during the day. My kids never had diaper rash and were super easy to potty train. They had long been used to wearing underpants instead of diapers.
I can't really recommend which brand of disposables might be best, but I definitely recommend keeping them off her little tooshy as much as possible.

Take care!

We had the same issue when my daughter was very young (about a month old). We had received a package of luvs and she had a very bad reaction to them. Her butt was so raw. The doctor told us to use triple paste. It cleared it right up and we went back to huggies. She almost never gets a rash now, but anytime we see anything, we slather her with the triple paste and it goes right away. I would suggest buying the jar instead of the tube, since it is thicker, but we have used both with good results. I thought it was yeast too, that's why I took her to the doctor. Hers was so bad (it got bad very quickly) that it had cracked in a couple of places. I felt so bad, it wasn't like I was leaving her sitting in soiled diapers or anything, but I guess that is what happens when your kids have really sensitive skin.

I don't know much about unscented diapers, but I would also try Triple Paste Medicated Ointment for diaper rash (available at Walgreens and I think Walmart). It is the best moisture barrier ever -far better than Desitin etc. It doesn't go on super creamy so it's a little harder to apply, but it is sure worth it. Perhaps in conjuction with new diapers it will help you daughter. Remember to change your babys diaper with a cloth and water as well instead of wipes, even unscented ones (they still use chemicals). Perhaps it's actually the chemicals from the wipes and not the dipaers that is irritating. Often rinsing out a wipe with warm water before using it will solve this problem as well. Good luck!

You might want to try Seventh Generation diapers. They are available at Whole Foods, Farmer Joes, Elephant Pharmacy, and online. They are not scented and they are not bleached. Most diapers are treated with chlorine bleach to become white. Perhaps this is affecting your daughter's skin as much as the perfume. Are your baby wipes scented too? Try switching those if they're scented and that might help as well. My daughter is also very sensative and got a similar irritation on her diaper area. One advice nurse told me it could also be due to the soap in her bath water so I started just bathing her in warm water and soaping up right at the end before we rinse her off.

Good luck!

i see there's many responses, but i will put in my vote for cloth. they do not cause diaper rash and they do not clog up the landfills. regular diapers (not the "organic" ones) have lots of very harsh chemicals that are being linked with dis-eases such as asthma and sterility. they are a bit more work, but i think it's worth it. babies in cloth diaper potty train sooner because they never lose the connection between pee and wetness. so while it's more work short-term, they are out of diapers sooner and less work (and waste) long-term. diaper services are pretty cheap.

Seems like you've had a lot of responses, thought I'd add one more. Both of my children are allergic to most diaper wipes, especially the kirkland ones from Costco. We can use pampers natural wipes and one of the huggies natural also. Thought I'd mention it because my kids are out of diapers but the preschool uses kirkland wipes for just wiping before and after snack, lunch etc. and if the teachers and my kids forget they will come home with slightly red faces, and occasionally a rash there also. FOr diapers, we always used Luvs (everything else leaked).
